Thai, Cambodian PMs agree to prevent border clashes

PATTAYA, April 10 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on Friday agreed to find ways to prevent border clashes between the armed forces of the two countries from reoccurring in future.

Both leaders discussed last Friday's border spat on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits in Thailand's eastern seaside resort town of Pattaya, they expressed regret over the latest clashes near the disputed ancient temple of Preah Vihear in which two Thai and two Cambodian soldiers died and nine Thai soldiers were wounded.

Mr. Abhisit told a press conference after the meeting, the incident happened because of a misunderstanding. He also said the incident would not affect bilateral relations and both countries would use channels of communication if anything similar looked likely to happen again in the future.

The Thai premier said he would also visit Cambodia on April 18 to meet King Norodom Sihamoni, Hun Sen and other senior officials.

Mr. Abhisit meanwhile returned one of seven stolen Cambodian artifacts from the 12th century during the discussion with Hun Sen.

The remaining artifacts will be handed to the Cambodian government during Mr. Abhisit’s official visit.

All seven antiquities were earlier stolen and carried to Thailand, but were seized by customs officials.

Panithan Wattanayakorn, deputy secretary-general to the Thai prime minister said Mr. Abhisit also stressed to Mr. Hun Sen that trade and investment between the two countries would continue, especially on the construction of the Highway 68 project which will link Thailand’s northeastern province of Surin with Cambodia’s Siem Reap province in that country’s northwest.

Construction costs of the highway estimated at US$43.7 million is expected to become a significant boost to an already burgeoning tourism industry in Siem Reap.

I'm not one of Hun Sen's supporters, but I just want to express my opinion as one of the Khmers: As long as Thais do not cross into Khmer territory, there will be no border clash. Thais often start a problem first.

The head of the giant stone behind the two PM, I think it belongs to the Khmer kingdom, we need that Thailand makes us immediately.

Does Hun thought this status we belong to the Khmer people?

If Thailand knows what belongs to Cambodia, they should hand over the land which belongs to Cambodia as well.

Just a show off that they are nice to return the artifact to khmer neak men, but they sent tanks, more red colar soldiers and fighter jets to the border to destroy preah vihear. They don't care about this rock, what they care is the yummy money from tourists going there thru their side. They are fully jealous of this hill granted to be WHS in Khmer land. Just to remind our soldiers there, hold tight, be ready and shoot them all if those siams step in again our land!
Long life cambodia, god bless khmer soldiers!

Mr. Hun Sen is the Prime Minitser of the Kingdom of Cambodia. He did not have opportunaty as some of us to visit the High school or University, but still works very hard and he is a good leader. He try to do the best for our country.
All of us remembered, that our country started to run with nothing after the many years of turmoil. Understandable that not all of us like his political leadership, but Mr Hun Sen is our Prime Minister and need all supports.

2:17 AM,

Actually, he is not doing so badly. There are things that can be improved, but he came a long way. In the wild, wild world of Cambodia, some time, there needs to be some "neak leng" approaches to keep the stability (ooh, I hate to say that word...)

The areas of improvement are in democracy, respect of laws, independent system of checks and balances, corruption and impunity.

But, comparing to Sihanouk's and Pol's regimes, Hun Sen's policies are working better. More people are eating better, wearing better clothes, more students are studying abroad, and internationally, he has got more friends than foes and more people in the world know about Cambodia than at any time in the past.

Thais only did this when they realized that our frontline soldiers are strong enough against their agression. They might have thought that Cambodia would be able to bring all the lost provinces back. This would explain why they sent reinforcements by their troops stationed in Burmese and Laotian borders.

They are smart in doing such move, but only in a short period of time

hun sen is a coward. he dare not touch illegal viets living in cambodia, letting roam freely in cambodia as if cambodia is a province of vietnam. the eastern border of cambodia has been encroached mby viets for years yet hun sen did nothing to stop viets. why? because he's boss is viet so go figure. the viets are everywhere in cambodia and don't assimilate with khmer culture, ignore khmer law etc. these problems need to be address at cambodian national assembly. cambodian people don't trust hun sen anymore, hes only good at attacking khmer people but when it comes to illegal viets mr hun sen turn his one eyes away.
