Nayan Chanda, author of Brother Enemy: The War After the War (1986) and long-time Indochina correspondent for the prestigious Far Eastern Economic Review, started his testimony on Monday May 25th at Duch's trial to discuss the armed conflict pitting Democratic Kampuchea against Vietnam. The journalist, currently director of publications at a research institute of U.S. university Yale, had access to officials of the Indochina peninsula, although he was unable to go to Democratic Kampuchea, and was able to understand the political, diplomatic and military issues for the enemy brothers. His testimony, based upon his book Brother Enemy, shed new light on the argument often used by former Khmer Rouge officials to justify their past actions, that is the existence of real expansionist intentions from the Vietnamese neighbour.

Nayan Chanda, author of Brother Enemy lost his credibility when Duch said that Cambodia and Vietnam were not brother! Duch went on using the South Korea and the North Korea as an example! He said that South Korea and North Korea used to be one country and share the same language and culture that can be called brother! And as for Cambodia and Vietnam both countries never share common border, language, and culture! Duch also stressed that on the part in Nayan Chanda's book quoted only the Vietcong Communist leaders such Phan Van dong as more credible than the Khmer Rouge leaders!

As far as I am concerned Nayan Chanda done a disservice to the court because of his bias in favor of the Vietcong!

As for me, I couldn't careless what the outcome of the Khmer Rouge trial because without the Khmer Rouge fighting the Vietcong and the Vietcong occupation of Cambodia would continue until today!

for once, i can see duch's point of view that the youn and khmer aren't brothers, so the title of the book here shouldn't be "brother enemy" to refer to the conflict between khmer and youn then. people must be educated to understand that cambodia and vietnam are two different country in most cases, two distinguish countries. so, if mr. chanda refer to "communism", then say so, instead of confusing the reader who might think khmer and youn are the same people and same country, etc... no way, jose! god bless cambodia.
