Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya dismissed yesterday Cambodia's compensation demand for damage to a market in front of Preah Viehar temple in a border skirmish in April.
"We have to understand it was a military clash and there are rules of engagement for the fighting. We have already made clear the buildings are in Thai territory," Kasit said.
Phnom Penh demanded compensation of more than $2 million (Bt65million) for damage to a total of 246 stands within the market which were completely destroyed, "causing hardship and misery to 319 Cambodian families."
In a diplomatic note to Bangkok on Monday, Cambodia demanded the Thai government take full responsibility for this damage by Thai soldiers and to appropriately compensate for the losses.
Kasit said security agencies were collecting information over the incident in the vicinity of the Hindu temple on April 3 in which three Thai soldiers were killed and many other people injured.
However, Thailand would not make a counter demand to Phnom Penh and would not reply to the Cambodian diplomatic note, he said.
The Preah Vihear, as ruled by the International Court of Justice in 1962, belongs to Cambodia but its surroundings are claimed by both sides and have not yet been demarcated.
The border dispute with Cambodia began last year as Thailand opposed Phnom Penh's proposal to list the Hindu temple as a world heritage site due to fear of sovereignty loss.
The dispute sparked military clashes last October and again in April this year.
Unesco approved Cambodia's bid for the Khmer sanctuary in July last year and has begun to survey the areas for a buffer zone.
Kasit warned the UN about doing the job with transparency and with respect for Thai sovereignty over the territory.
"We are collecting information about Unesco and the World Heritage Committee's work to see if they are conducted properly," he said.

i saw it with my own eyes. the destroyed market was clearly on Cambodia land... Thanks to Tamok for gavin so much lands to Thai.
Make no mistake that the world court had rendered its decision regarding Preah Vihear in 1962. If Thailand refuses to pay for damages it has inflicted upon Cambodian civilians on Cambodian soil, Cambodia has the right to take Thailand to the world court once again. "Once a thief always a thief, mind as well pack all your belongings back to Nan Chao." Phnom Penh should ask the Thai embassy personel to leave...and shut the Thai embassy down for good!
So funny, Hun Sen hand-shaking with Kasit..
So absurb asking for $2M. for damages....
Are these Khmer monkeys fools?
Hun Sen should ask for $100 Million for the compensation.
Then close down the Thai embassy if they continue with a child policy toward Khmer.
KhmerPP,
HUN SEN messed up! Why the hell he shook hands (One hand support other hand). He is a sore looser to Kasit!!

To all Khmer around the world, please help participates in this events by seeking the information from Khmer Krom representative everywhere in your community.
Thirdly, my respectfully goes to the team of KI-Media. So far your team had done a tremendous job for the Khmer benefits and keep up the good works.
Fourthly, to all Khmer abroad please bring back The Fourth Factions or Paris Peace Accord unity strategy models. In the early ninety the only Youn pullout from Cambodia because we Khmers had united. Back then king Seyhanouk had all the power, popularity and was incharged. Every body respected him from Khmer perspective and the international community perspective. If I were him I would use this power and popularity to declare to the world community that the Khmer people still under the supression, aggression of Youn and Seam. In doing so, his reputations and credibility will be installed next to the Great Khmer King Jayavarman VII.
In the case of Kampuchea Krom, if we use this exact models we Khmer will once again liberated Kampuchea Krom from the Youn iron grips. And possibly Khmer Krom can declare their independent or reannexed to Cambodia who knows.
Respectively your,
Khmer Empire
