THOUSANDS of members of Cambodia's Khmer Krom community are expected to participate in a ceremony set for June 4 to mark the 60th anniversary of the loss of their territory to Vietnam.
"We celebrated the loss every year, starting in 2000, and the King has always sent his representative to preside over the ceremony," Thach Setha, former senator of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and executive director of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Community told the Post Thursday.
The ceremony, which will be held in front of Wat Botumvadei, is open to all Cambodians, organisers said. Thach Setha said the group had been granted permission every year for their ceremony. However, he said he had submitted a letter requesting permission to the Phnom Penh Municipality on April 30 this year and had yet to hear back.
Kep Chuktema, Phnom Penh municipal governor, could not be reached for comment on Thursday to confirm whether this year's ceremony would be allowed.
Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said he doubted the ceremony would affect Vietnamese government policy towards the Khmer Krom.
The Vietnamese government is to appear before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva for its five-yearly rights review Friday, with local rights activists hoping it will force Hanoi to account for its treatment of the Khmer Krom remaining in Vietnam.

Nobody can put a price on freedom! Khmer people can choose to live free like a human or they can choose to live in a cage like animal!
The Vietcong government has a choice and they can choose to kill the Khmer or they can let the Khmer go free! To kill and to be killed is the way of animal and the Vietcong government is doing just that! And it is only a matter of time that the Khmer will become more radicalize in dealing with such a ruthless Vietcong government behavior!

Khmers have to love Khmers. No matter where you are. Don't play stupid politic to step on your native again and again.Have to open yuor eyes to look around you and see how yuon and thai they love their people.
if we study world history, etc, we noted that national boundary line comes and goes through the human history. i'm sure one day khmer people will regain our lost lands back from youn and siem. only time will tell. god bless cambodia.

I would ask you all to go and participate in the memorial. The memorial proceeding must take place, with or without the government approval. This is a test for us and the Hun Sen government. The city and the CPP will not dare to stop us as this could potentially provoke a massive rebellion or social unrest. Understand that many people vote for CPP, but it does not mean that they agree with CPP to suppress Khmer protests against the Vietnamization.
I also ask the organizers to select a symbol of the protest so that we can make a national emblem and have it printed on T-shirts. We can then ask all Khmers everywhere in Cambodia and around the world to wear that T-shirts during the memorial day. They will be show of force and solidarity for all Khmers.
My Khmer compatriots, this is our moment and we are making history. Let the struggle begin and we will win!
Sam Rainsy party members must no be afraid to come out to help organizing and support the memorial. This is a golden opportunity for SRP to show the people that they care and work for the nation. People will remember which party is really working for the Khmer people.
