Cambodia, Thailand each demand compensation for damages

Government officials warned Wednesday that while Cambodia continues to seek a peaceful resolution to its border dispute with Thailand, its patience will run out, as both sides demand compensation over the latest bout of fighting.

"Our solution is very patient, but this is limited and one day when our patience is over, we will use another mechanism," said Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Monday the ministry sent a diplomatic note to Thailand demanding US$2.1 million in compensation for the destruction of a market near Preah Vihear temple that was destroyed when clashes broke out on April 3.

The government blames Thai rocket fire for the blaze, which destroyed 264 stalls.

Koy Kuong said the ministry has not yet received an official response from Thailand over its demands.

But a spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry told media on Tuesday that not only would Thailand refuse to pay, it would seek compensation from Cambodia over the deaths of three Thai soldiers.

"We have always clearly stated that area belongs to Thailand and that Cambodian soldiers illegally trespassed into our territory," Tharit Charungvat told AFP on Tuesday.

"We are working on the amount of compensation that we are seeking from Cambodia too, as our soldiers died," he added.

Koy Kuong downplayed the Thai spokesman's remarks, saying, "We do not consider the comment of the Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman as the stance of the Thai government because we have sent an official diplomatic note and they have not responded yet."

In its note to Bangkok, the government said the loss of the market was "causing great hardship and misery to 319 families who have lost their entire livelihood".

It added, "The Royal Government of Cambodia demands that the Royal Thai government take full responsibility."

Cambodia was awarded Preah Vihear temple in 1962, but Thailand is laying claim to 5 square kilometers next to it.

Thailand is a childish country.
They are behaving like a child.

This reverse psychology is not acceptable at all. You bombed or shelled someone then asking for a compensation???

How on earth they believe you?

HUN SEN must demand the Thai to pay for this otherwise they will not learn how to behave in this modern time.

the stupid thai tries to counter sue cambodia for their soldiers' death, how stupid can that be! cambodia is suing them for the khmer civilians' displacement and irreversible damages to their livelihood, residence, businesses, etc. plus, it was cambodian territory that they invaded and shelled and bombed, not to mention they killed our soldiers as well for their violation of international treaty in the first place. what a moron they really are to try to counter sue or whatever. it goes to show that the thai are really a race of instigators, trouble-makers, greedy, bully types. pick on someone your own size for a change for you will suffer the worst, you chicken shit!

Firstly, my hat go off to all the Khmer compatriots, scholars, intellectuals, and the Khmers around the world in and outside the Khmer Empire nation, who's tirelesly to helps fought for Khmer Krom to reach our independent in the near future.

Secondly, this coming June the fourth Khmer Krom and Khmer around the world will commemorated and observed the lost of Kampuchea Krom 60th aniversaries. To all Khmer around the world, please help participates in this events by seeking the information from Khmer Krom representative everywhere in your community.

Thirdly, my respectfully goes to the team of KI-Media. So far your team had done a tremendous job for the Khmer benefits and keep up the good works.

Fourthly, to all Khmer abroad please bring back The Fourth Factions or Paris Peace Accord unity strategy models. In the early ninety the only Youn pullout from Cambodia because we Khmers had united. Back then king Seyhanouk had all the power, popularity and was incharged. Every body respected him from Khmer perspective and the international community perspective. If I were him I would use this power and popularity to declare to the world community that the Khmer people still under the supression, aggression of Youn and Seam. In doing so, his reputations and credibility will be installed next to the Great Khmer King Jayavarman VII.
In the case of Kampuchea Krom, if we use this exact models we Khmer will once again liberated Kampuchea Krom from the Youn iron grips. And possibly Khmer Krom can declare their independent or reannexed to Cambodia who knows.

Respectively your,

Khmer Empire

Cambodian government must stand firm on its demand for compensation. And our patience of talks through bilateral mechanism should be stopped now. We must not talk with Thailand who does not want a solution. We must push through other mechanisms including ICJ.

All Khmer,

Yuon Puppet Hun Sen's regime won't do anything on this matter, until a GREEN Light from his master Hanoi
ordering to do.

This matter will hurt Hanoi of swallowing our khmer territories endorsed by Khmer Rubber Stamp king
to legalise that, even though it was a violation of 1991's Paris Peace Accord.

So why, as signatoried country, Thailand will not obey this International Peace Agreement anymore.
