Muggers Target Princess And Pals In Cambodia

Monday May 04, 2009
Sky News

Princess Eugenie and her friends were targeted by muggers in Cambodia, it has been reported.

A bandit grabbed a purse belonging to a friend of the younger daughter of the Duke of York during a night out in Phnom Penh, The Sun said.

Royal protection officers tackled the robber, only to be pelted with rocks by another bandit, the paper added.

Eugenie, 19, and her friends were then whisked away to safety by the police.

A Buckingham Palace source told the paper: "(Police) feared the incident was escalating out of control and took the decision to focus on the safety of their principal."

It is the first time in a decade that SO14 Special Branch officers have stopped a direct threat to a royal.

The princess - who is sixth in line to the throne - is on a gap-year trip which has already included visits to Thailand and South Africa.

There has been criticism of the cost of police protection for Eugenie during the trip, said to be in the region of £100,000.

I feel really bad to hear this such a story in my own country. Sorry to the Princess and her pals for this such happening! I am really ashamed we, Cambodians, could welcome her warmly, but in stead, bring her some trouble. This can relfect the security in Cambodia. Where all those police? I do not really believe in them now. What i have to do is to protect myself.

It is Cambodia's honor to have this visit from the princess of England, but it is a shame to have the thief happens to her.

Sure it is fine for the Princess. They know this situation in Cambodia before arriving here. Don't feel too bad about the case, because the Princess is well educated. They are all very nice and friendly people.
I know her grandfather's family well and I am a Khmer.

Gampbling houses were blamed for robbery and other crimes and vices in Phnom Penh and they were ordered to close. One wouldn't have thought there wouldn't be any such crimes, and least of all the robbery of this young British princess.

Just a random act of a petty purse snatcher. It could have happened to anyone. The princess wasn't "targeted" as reported. I am Khmer. I would appreciate it if you people stop apologizing about Khmer savagery to your white masters on my behalf.

We don't apologize because of slavery or master matter but in name of Khmer we apologize as she is our visitor , It's our responsibility to protect tourism doesn't matter who S/he is . If nothing happened to tourism they might spread word of mouth for other people to visit our Cambodia again . Don't you guy agree ?

I dont believe this story that the princess was robbed. If if she was robbed, it was not targetted. The thieves (if any) were just purse snatchers, not bandits.
It is just cheap western publicity. I dont believe it. Print some photos to prove that this event occured.

Both of you are Ah Hun Sen's gangsters and don't know who is honorable visitor and who is not.

Ah Hun Sen regime couldn't protect the princess of England. They can only protect their Hanoi masters. These special people should be protected 24 hours because they're the promoter to tourist industries in Cambodia.

I feel a shame of Khmer leaders especially Ah Kwak Hun Zen.

Khmer people are very generous to foreigners and we don't look down to white people; except, Vietnamese and Thai are cruel people. They don't respect any foreigners.

We're sorry for the guys who robbed you, princess. We hope you enjoy the trip to Cambodia and see the real thing in Cambodia lives.

To 6.53pm
please note who is reporting this news. It is from Sky News and AFP, both foreign newspapers. Read carefully the wording:
A Buckingham Palace source told the paper: "(Police) feared the incident was escalating out of control and took the decision to focus on the safety of their principal."
Were there any Cambodian police around?; how co-incidental; note the words (escalating out of conrol). How can street purse snatchers create a situation out of control?
It is cheap western publicity for the princess and to do damage to cambodia;
You said the Govt of cambodia cannot protect this foreign dignitary; I ask you, how is the Govt going to protect anyone if this foreign dignitary has not informed the Govt earlier; from the reporting, it appears none; No need for cambodia to apologise

Purse snatching occurs everywhere in the world espaecially in third world countries with the economic crisis. It just happens that this incident involved a princess which amplifies the story worlwide.

This does not reflect favorably on cambodia especially when the KR trials are bringing attention to this nation.

The police should be protecting its citizens and guests instead of asking for bribes.

Yes we should apologise to any guest of cambodia that suffers from such incidences.

i have a feeling this might be a public stunt or is it? most people in people don't know and don't care who a person is as cambodia is getting millions of tourists now. so, it is naturally to have and entourage to protect a vip, etc... it could happen to anyone anywhere as well, not just in cambodia like this. i hope it's not going to discourage people from visiting cambodia because of this incidence. i think most khmer people have nothing against her royal highess, the princess; the person that committed this heinous act is probably a drug addict, homeless person who knew nothing of her royal status. cambodia, i see is way safer and better than this. god bless cambodia.
