Biofuel: the thrice winning formula of a Cambodian high school student

“I beat an American!” Sam Ang Manin, a 16-year-old Phnom Penh young girl, still cannot believe it: her project to produce biofuel based on jatropha oil won her a gold medal at the I-Sweeep 2009 international contest between budding scientists, when a similar project of a United States high school student was awarded “only” a silver medal. The young Cambodian has even more reasons to be proud since she has also received a scholarship and a special prize of a U.S. firm. She thereby did even better than a previous Cambodian prize winner, who had obtained a silver medal in the same category “Senior Energy” in this contest in 2008 for her coconut diesel.
Three wins
Thrice, Sam Ang Manin heard her name be called in the great room of the Conventional Hall of Houston, Texas, where the I-Sweeep contest, an international Olympiad on energy, engineering and environment which aim is to spot and reward budding scientific geniuses from all over the world. The young Cambodian first walked onto the podium when called by the jury of the University of Fatih, which granted her a full tuition scholarship for four years to study a science subject in the Turkish college. She was then called again to receive a gold medal in the category of new energies in the I-Sweeep contest – a medal coming with a cheque of 1,000 dollars. Finally, Manin won over a private company, Ege Construction, which was one of the event's sponsors and awarded her its special prize for “Innovative energy solutions.” “When I received the first award, there was little clapping, because very few Cambodians were present,” the good student in a private high school of Phnom Penh says mischievously. “But when I was called again to receive my second and then my third prizes, everyone, including the participants from various countries, showed a lot of enthusiasm.” Indeed, a plethora of medals were given out in this contest (in Manin's “Senior Energy” category, eight other students received gold medals), but no other participant was honoured with three awards.

I am so proud of her. Great job Sam Ang Mannin!
If HUN SEN really encourage those who study hard I bet a lot of young Cambodian will try hard to study and lead the country to catch up with the modern time.
Especially, like those who is trying to invent bare the name Angkor, HUN SEN should try to ask some sponsor countries to help that out.
Cambodia will move faster and catch up with the rest of modern world if our leader really push for it.
KhmerPP,
Congratulations Sam Ang Mannin!!! you have done a great job.
When you finish you study under the scholarship program in the US, I suggest you don't come back to Cambodia. If you do, all you skill will become useless. I don't you mean have no capacity, but the realiity is that you won't have chance to utilise your skills. I am sure you know that in Cambodia, you skill will not be sharpen as the government only employs those who have good connection with high ranking officers or those who are good at paying bribe. All ministries in the gov't is now well known as family ministries
2:56pm... stfu! Cambodia needs the like of Mannin to restore once again its pride and recognition.. we need to put together our limited resources to make a better Cambodia, let alone the politic. We definitely have a lot of talents and geniuses.. it is just that we are not wise enough to make the most out of them or to pull them together to work for the benefit of the country.. perhaps, the political barrier does just that.
2:56PM what you're trying to suggest to her right now is to downgrade your motherland. and I have to say that I am really ashame to have people like you as my compatriot. I have to admit that Cambodia is not perfect. Thus, all khmer citizens have to work hand in hand to improve our country. If you're happy with your life out there just stay out there. No need to raise ideas to mess up here because if you really love your country you'd come back to help to improve it or at least give constructive critisism and not some of this insane idea.
And I have to say that I found your idea really unintellectual.
Proud to be KHMER,
- Just one word.."WOW!!!!"
- And one question.." Why Hun Sen is discussed here?..coz nothing related to him at all"
2:56 PM
what kind of a bad idea you have ? I am sure the young Khmer girl knows better and do not need your advise.
She is smart enough to know who she is.
wow, I say :D, good job girl!
Guys, be realistic!!! Some people just pretend to be nationalists. But, what have you done/contributed to the country so far? At least I have contributed to the nation for quite substaintial amounts in taxes before I decided to leave as I did not see people appreciate the skills, but rather jealous.
What I try to say is for her good future. If she is your sister or daughter, are you all going to push her to come back to do all the research on her own in Cambodia. It is still very initial stage for her to do all the research and development. Even she has skills, do you think she has enough resources to invent and develop into a big project in Cambodia??
In the US, even she does not have enough resources, she can always join with the R&D team of a company or gov't project. She can always come back to Cambodia after obtaining necessary skills/experience/resources and opportunity that allow her to develop a project in Cambodia. BUT...you should know how many real Khmer experts have returned back to Cambodia to utilise their skills...
5:38 PM
Keep it to yourself. Why made noise about it?
Congrats, very happy for you.
Girl, you are making Khmer around the world proud.
Keep up the good work!
My beloved 5:38PM!
I am kinda agreeing with you, she would come back when she academically and experimentally has enough skill. Unashamedly speaking, Hun SenVarman's regime your highly academic education is not publicly respectful than the uneducated and corrupted CPP's old parasites.
What the era are we living in or with? In order to have high range or make a good money, you must be knew how to be a corruptor
Congratulation, Manin, a job well done, indeed! For now, all you have to do is persue your study and try your best. You can make up your mind either before or after your graduation. Good luck!!!!
Congratulation, girl, for your first success in I-Sweep 2009. I agree with 5:38PM.
Obviously there are two kinds of Khmer. Khmer that only think of themselves like a few of those fuckers up there and Khmer that sacrifice their personal wealth beings to see a better Cambodia. Fuck ah Khmer pleuk Tirk Dey. Fuck you. When you die, you won't be remembered as Khmer anymore because you didn't live as one. So you might as well stop being Khmer already. Fucker. Be American or whatever your second country is.
Remember. The people that forget their roots won't go far. I rather be living on minimal wages doing something for Cambodia than living a luxurious life in other country just for myself.
We're all gonna die one day. It is how you wanna go out. I'll go out being remembered for something I'll do for Cambodia unlike some of your selfish assholes. You won't be remembered as nothing because your selfish egotistical attitude will only let you think of yourself and never my beloved Cambodia. So live your awesome enriched life, buddies while some of us have dignity and pride enough to live for our country, not for ourselves.
9.25 pm...go go go...I support you to carry B40 to fire at Siam along the border. Khmer people will appreciate if you sacrify yourself for our teritory.
This is should be a national pride!
This is good news that we have talents people like her.
I hope the rich countries won't buy her. Example like in the USA if you can innovate or invent something like energy, the Chevron, Mobil or any oil companies etc. They will pay high amount of money just buy you.
Khmerborder,
A lot of Khmer intellectuals ended up working near by Cambodia. In Singapore, I have a lot of friends who highly educated ended up working in that country. Cause Cambodia has not infrastructure or any companies to work for.
HUN SEN should build infrastructures in attract high tech companies.
Of course, there are two kinds of human beings: males and females; good and bad. There are more people who, for their own benefit, have the tendency to do anything illegal, kicking a side the national benefit. Those people are Hun Sen, Cham Praset, Sok An, and most the high-ranking officials of CPP. These people do not need the well-educated from abroad. If folk do not believe me, ask Hun Sen; he's the highest role models of the bad. The staight-forward honest patriots are the big loosers. Truth proves that!
. . . and the FUCKER 9:25PM should show other Khmers your role model of sacrify and I and other folks will follow your steps. Do not be mistaken that I am a self-centered person; I had mad some contribtuin since 1993, though it wasn't much because I am a poor guy.
We should and must keep this kind of human resource in our country.
We want to see our country striving.
We want our dignity and glory back!!
My father told me back in the day of Sihanouk (60's), there was a guy very smart with Nuclear Engineering and went back home and was being insult and look down or even saying that Cambodia doesn't need that. Instead of encourage or uplifting our intellectuals Sihanouk saying we don't need him. If Sihanouk put his knowledge to work therefore Cambodia never been looked down by the two aggressive neighbors.
We must support our intellectuals!!
Anyway, any Khmer intellectuals graduate with any degree I always them all.
Regardless what kind of majors or degree, we need them all. We need human resource badly. I've already requested to HUN SEN to build infrastructures. We need high tech building.
We will run the show again in Southeast Asia.
KhmerPride,
correction
Anyway, any Khmer intellectuals graduate with any degree "I always them all"=I've always support them all.
Congratulation Manijn,
It's another gift from God you reciveced. Thank God for He gives you to serve a purpose. You are a child of God. You are a witness that talent is not lacking in Cambodia. Only to make it sprout and grow.
If suppression is removed, your talent will develp and grow even more and will be very useful to mankind and as well Cambodian poors and needees who are God's people.
Angkor was built by God's people. But the downfall of Angkor is caused by our own pride and we forget and knew nor more God who gave generously knewledgeto Khmer Angkor builder.
Let return to God and the rest will be done.
congratulations, ms. sam ang manin. please keep up the good work. god bless.
10:38 PM
You're poor? How do you get a computer and internet? You are a fucking liar just like many of the fuckers on here. Oh I'm so poor. Your shit is weak, bitch. Learn to lie better. All those years in prison haven't taught you to learn to lie better yet. Or are you using the free hours for internet from your county jail's cell?
We all know some Khmer couldn't give a shit about Cambodia. I know many Khmer abroad who don't even care or want to associate themselves with Cambodia. Fuck them. But I also know other Khmer abroad that care about Cambodia.
So to the fuckers that don't, go fuck yourself with your fat paid check, you fucking traitor.
For the Khmer that care about Khmer, I love you. :)
9:38 PM
You support others to sacrifice themselves for the country but what about you? What are you? Are you a sissy pussy cheerleader? I know you don't have balls but just because you are ball-less, don't be a deuce either.
sky is the limit... with the right kind of environment, Cambodia could excel... Hun Sen gov't has the responsibility to set them in the right path so cambodians can prosper. cambodians are capable people if we must have a chance...
9:25 PM
I admired you and your patriotism. I am glad you think that way. We all ought to have our own identity. Once who loses identity will lose everything. It does not matter where we live but do remember you are Khmer/Cambodian in origin and you would do anything to help your own kind.
Criticism is for constructive not negative and don't ever take it that way.
Telling the truth hurts. It is my wish to one day return to Cambodia to live and to work as a way to contribute/pay back as a citizen.
Bashing each other certainly will not bring Khmer unity. I just wish that we all can respect each other differences, because differences brings in diversity and moderation to our balance way of lives.
Political aside, Hun Sen should learn from you the spirit of patriotism. It is not just above him, him and him and leave everyone else in the cold. Too much of one isn't good for you and I think we have too much of HS.
One day we will die but our memory and legacy will live on... I hope for a good reason.
2:18AM,
Here in the US, most sons and daughters pay for all those things. My son has paid for his own, mine, and my daughter's handphone and internet too. You believe it or not, it's up to you, and you should also learn to use appropriate words, but if you have been indirectly taught by Hun Sen; it's OK. I tolerate your rudeness. I only use cussing words after I have been cussed; otherwise, I never; it's my nature.
. . .and let me add just a little bit more: I went to college for more four years to study English literature and aviation mechanics. I did not to study lying. I have a perfectly clean criminal record. Even the record of my 24-year driving is also perfect. I have never got a ticket from the police. Do you why? I always play by the rule. Once a week I go to the Buddhist temple to pusue spiritual serenity.
Can any one explains to me what is jatropha oil just because I couldn't find the word "jetropha"in the dictionary. My email addressm : achey@whoever.com
Many thanks
Hey I went to a workshop held by GERES Cambodia and NGO Forum at Himawari Hotel on April 30th. They don't Call it Bio-fuels, because the word Bio is environmental friendly. They call it Agro-fuels, because those oil still have there negatives.
My name is Dara by the way.
