Sichan Siv Will Visit the Long Beach Public Library on May 19th

Cambodian "Killing Fields" Survivor, Ambassador Sichan Siv, Bestselling Author of Golden Bones, Will Visit the Long Beach Public Library May 19th

The Long Beach Public Library Foundation will present "killing fields" survivor's story of success at the Main Library in Long Beach, CA on Tuesday May 19th from 5:30.-7:30p.m. Ambassador Sichan Siv will tell his tale of endurance and triumph rising from Pol Pot prisoner to U.S. Ambassadorship to achieve the American Dream.

Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2009 -- Daring escapes from war horrors coupled with meteoric rises from tragedy's ashes are often thought to be only the stuff of Hollywood films. But the dramatic and courageous life of The Honorable Sichan Siv - a refugee from the Cambodian "killing fields" and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations - is a true story.

The Long Beach Public Library Foundation is pleased to present Ambassador Siv on Tuesday, May 19, to tell his amazing and inspiring story from his best-selling book, Golden Bones: An Extraordinary Journey from Hell in Cambodia to a New Life in America. This will be the Ambassador's first appearance in Southern California.

While war raged throughout Southeast Asia in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ambassador Siv was a young intellectual and graduate student in Cambodia. He was part of the target demographic that dictator Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge sought to eradicate, resulting in the infamous "killing fields" or rice paddies dotted with millions of skulls.

Siv was captured and placed in a slave labor camp, but made a daring escape though the jungle to Thailand. After months in a refuge camp, he entered the United States. Once here, through diligence and hard work, he rose to the heights of the U.S. government.

Tuesday, May 19 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Main Auditorium, Long Beach Public Library
101 Pacific Avenue, Long Beach

Tickets are available for $30 by calling (562) 628-2441 or purchasing online at www.lbplfoundation.org. The event will include a live reading by Ambassador Siv, book signing and refreshments. Books will be available to purchase.

The non-profit Long Beach Public Library Foundation supplements and supports the Long Beach Public Library. The Foundation's programs include Family Learning Centers at each of the city's 12 libraries, as well as the Raising A Reader program, which has graduated more than 5,700 parents and pre-schoolers from its reading readiness course. Among the Foundation's most prominent programs is the annual Long Beach Reads One Book, when the entire city spends a week celebrating a selected book and its author. Funds from Ambassador Siv's appearance will support these programs.

This guy is not an ambassador. He was an assistant economic affair to southeast Asia at the UN. He married one of Bush's cousin to get to that position. There are a lot of killings field survivors with more horror stories than his that made success of themselves. The difference is that they're not profiting from it.

I am also one of the Pol Pot survivors, living in LB. I do not know much about Sichan Siv. Is he a person who would be brave and cares enough to help Khmers in Cambodia?

Dear my Khmers,

I see that there are a lot of negative comments on Chansiv. I am afraid Khmers have a stupid, crazy sickness of jealousy. That why we can't grow and develop the nation. If we really want to help Cambodia, I think our minds and hearts must be opened widely, we have to courage, support and nurture the nation pride etc.

Some of us blame Hun Sen of discouraging the next generation to grow, but why we are here doing the same thing, why don't we support and love Khmer instead of being negative??

Please clean the impurity of jealousy in your mind first, if you want to be good citizens of Cambodia!!! She needs more good, opened hearts people in order to rebuild the nation!!!

Thanks

This is not true. if khmer want to help the homeland. Then how is writing a biography about yourself going to help a corrupt Cambodian government? How will it help feed the hunger? Save the homeless? shelter an orphan, rescue a prostitute? Prevent Aides, or stop child abuse?

You think charging $30 to listen to one guy who boast about himself, his career and his connection will solve these problems in Cambodia?

Khmer are proud of each success story, but its how you deliver the success. If this Siv guy want to help Cambodia, he should confront the Cambodian government, he should bring these issue's I've listted above to the world stage.

We know about Dafur because of Cloony and Pitt.

There are many ways to help Cambodia. Confronting the government is not only the way to change the country. Look at the USA and other countries how they change their nations? it must come from people, good hearted people etc. Of course, I don't know guy Siv, i just want to see more successful Cambodians in national and international levels, one day, those will make Cambodia success as they did for themselves.

thanks

Presenting Sichan in Long Beach, LB Public Library might think of all the good things to happen to the Khmer community. But Khmer story is just happent to be different from the world. In this case, being too proud for being a succesful KR survivors can hirt a lot of people, dead an alive. Sichan must carrefully think of what he has to say, and always remeber that, those dead victims of the KR were not because they didn't own golden bones, and not as smart as he was. It's not about kalousie. What I knew of him from the past was that so many Cambodian nationals felt proud of him and respect him when he was hired to work in the Whit House. But later on he just discredited himself step by step. Khmer tha cho tik prahok! Chuoy min ban te a puok mak!!!

Firstly, my hat go off to all the Khmer compatriots, scholars, intellectuals, and the Khmers around the world in and outside the Khmer Empire nation, who's tirelesly to helps fought for Khmer Krom to reach our independent in the near future.

Secondly, this coming June the fourth Khmer Krom and Khmer around the world will commemorated and observed the lost of Kampuchea Krom 60th aniversaries. To all Khmer around the world, please help participates in this events by seeking the information from Khmer Krom representative everywhere in your community.

Thirdly, my respectfully goes to the team of KI-Media. So far your team had done a tremendous job for the Khmer benefits and keep up the good works.

Fourthly, to all Khmer abroad please bring back The Fourth Factions or Paris Peace Accord unity strategy models. In the early ninety the only Youn pullout from Cambodia because we Khmers had united. Back then king Seyhanouk had all the power, popularity and was incharged. Every body respected him from Khmer perspective and the international community perspective. If I were him I would use this power and popularity to declare to the world community that the Khmer people still under the supression, aggression of Youn and Seam. In doing so, his reputations and credibility will be installed next to the Great Khmer King Jayavarman VII.
In the case of Kampuchea Krom, if we use this exact models we Khmer will once again liberated Kampuchea Krom from the Youn iron grips. And possibly Khmer Krom can declare their independent or reannexed to Cambodia who knows.

Respectively your,

Khmer Empire
