Thai, Cambodian generals meet at border to ease renewed tensions

The Phnom Penh Post

Officials on both sides say dialogue helped build greater ‘understanding'.

A THAI military commander on Thursday met Cambodian commanders at the conflict zone near Preah Vihear temple, with the aim of promoting cooperation and reducing tension between the two sides, a military official told the Post Thursday.

General Srey Doek, commander of Military Division 3 based at Preah Vihear, said that he met with General Anupong Paochinda, commander-in-chief of the Thai army, and discussed how to avoid future military confrontations.

"This is the first time I have met with a top Thai commander," Srey Doek told the Post. "We proposed that Thai troops stop entering the prohibited zone and he accepted."

Srey Doek said the two had agreed that troops on both sides should remain at their bases and wait for a solution between the two governments.

Cambodian and Thai defence ministers met last month but failed to reach an agreement on troop redeployments from the areas surrounding the temple and the pagoda of Keo Sekha Kirisvara.

"The visit will speed up understanding between the two sides," said Commander Yim Phim of the RCAF'S Brigade 8. "This is the only point of the meeting."

Standoff in 10th month

Troops have remained at the border for almost 10 months, following Unesco's listing of the Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage site in July last year. The last exchange of gun fire, in April, killed three Thai soldiers.

How is that fault by Khmer government? Did Khmer government invite those Thai to come to do this to us? NO. You need to stop using any possible issue to try to get to your political agenda. So you don't like the current Khmer government. Ok. But what does this have anything to do with how the government is doing?

Stop being a political tool and mud-slinging. If you want to criticize, do it when it is credible and relevant.

Fyi, this will never end because Thai use this issue as a political game to steer away the tension of their internal political problems.

If you paid attention, all the clashes happened when their internal politics get into chaos. Do the timing. When the protest in Thailand gets out of control, there is a clash. Again and again.

I don't think that is a coincident.

I think the 40 just want Cambodia Government to go straight to UNESCO instead of palying Thai game.
And this is what I see: Siam is having big internal crisis. They are trying to be smart by pulling Cambodia to play their game, to turn around peole's attention to a border conflict with Cambodia. In this way they can use people's national spirit to cover up their internal problem. Siam survived so many coup d'etat in the past, but this last one didn't work out as planed. We Khmer have to stay out of the siam's gameplan, it doesn't matter you are friend to Taksin or the ruling party. Please don't get tricted.

You are 50% right.

If the Khmer Rouge Hun Sen government want to end this border conflict, the Khmer Rouge Hun Sen government would ask the United Nation for help already.

Complains, but did not have any constructive critic. Maybe some of us have to spend time at the border, as military members and as a role model for other Khmers

Yes you can go and be a role model for corrupt gvmnt. Don't forget to critic and construct those monkeys.

Beware of Thailand secrete design. It wants for years to avoid recognizing the 1904-1908 border treaty between our two countries, so that Thailand can reclaim Battambang, Sisophon, and Siem Reap back to Thailand. In this case Cambodia can reclaim Surin, Nokoreach Seima(Korat),Trat (Kompong Trat)if Thailanad wants to revise this border treaty. General Peuvchinda (Paochinda)is playing the Thai dirty game.

Khmer rouge will give Ah Siamese more bitter tasts, if they dare to step inside khmer territory again! i meant there will be more body bags for sure...

Thailand still seeing cambodia is weaks, and can't fight back against their super fighter-jet and Tanks, this is why Thai kept denying and said those damaged they will not pay, it's inside their territory, cambodia must upgrade her military might from now on, otherwise there will be more problems in the future invasions from her neighbors again and again...

Hun Sen is smart enough to know that the current strength of the RCAF is not up to the Thai Army. That is why he has been playing hard and soft to avoid a full scale war, while taking his time to better equip his army. Right now the best way to resolve the conflict is through negotiation and compromise. War is definitely not an answer for Cambodia and the consequence would be too dire for Cambodia, but I guess it is not a problem for most of you here because you don't even live in Cambodia.

To 8:22,

Do you think only Cambodia can ask for help from UN? If Cambodia can, Thailand can too.

Anonymous said...

Thai-thieft will be lost if they seeking for help from UN stupid fuck! Thai drawn it ownself map? just by itself?????? hahaha! fucken cheater!!

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with 4:18PM! Hun Sen is patient and taking his time and rebuilding his army strength nowaday, he's not fucking around type of person! He don't take shit from anybody...

Anonymous said...

Thailand can't use super-jetfighter against poor and small country like cambodia, it's broke international laws! the whole world will prosecute Thailand, if Thai still encroaching into khmer lands, khmer rouge jungle will kills them one by one....

Anonymous said...

4:24

If I'm understand you correctly, criminal that violated international laws would ask authority for help?

Does this make any sense?
