Thailand want to build a replica of Preah Vihear ... this is a sincere flattery for Cambodia

Local authorities warn about building Preah Vihear replica

SI SA KET, May 24 (TNA) – Provincial authorities have warned the private sector to conduct a thorough study, including an impact assessment on the issue of Thai-Cambodian relations, before deciding to build a replica of the Preah Vihear temple in the northeastern Thai border province.

Si Sa Ket governor Rapi Pongbuphakit said he supported any constructive idea to develop the area but the idea to build the replica of the Preah Vihear temple at Pha Mor E-daeng, an area close to the stairway leading to Preah Vihear temple, needed a special and thorough study.

The issue was very important, especially in the aspect of environmental concerns and border security, he said. He added he couldn’t tell if he agreed with the idea or not at the moment.

Although the planned construction site is in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak district, it is not far from the Preah Vihear temple.

An international court awarded Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia in 1962, but a 4.6-square km (1.9-square mile) parcel of land surrounding it remains the subject of territorial claims by the two countries.

The disputed area, adjacent to the ancient temple, has long been a source of tension between Thailand and Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Vichit Trisaranakul, chairman of the provincial administrative organisation said detailed feasibility studies were needed. The real Preah Vihear and its history attracted tourists. He suggested beautifying the surrounding location was better than building the temple replica, close to the real temple.

What a stupid idea. They're so stupid and funny. I think they want our Preah Vihear in a way that makes them totally ignorant.

It's just like printing 'ghost' 100-dollar notes. How can you compare those worthless notes with the real ones?

The Thais have already built a replica of the Preah Vihear Temple at Thai Ancient City (Muang Buran Thai), an open museum of ancient monuments, at Samut Prakarn, 33 Km east of Bangkok. That replica was built in 1964, two years after the International Court of Justice had declared that the temple belong to Cambodia.

The replica, perhaps one third of the size with doors for people to enter, is build on an artifical highland and on top of a cliff overlooking Samut Prakarn town.

I was there twice, the second time the Thai taxi driver pretended he could not find the temple within that museum, but nevertheless asked what I thought about it after my visit to the temple.

Here is a description of the attactions of that museum: "The best works include the Grand Palace of Ayutthaya that was destroyed in the Burmese incursion of 1767, the Wat Khao Phra Viharn on the Cambodian border and the Phimai Sanctuary in Nakhon Ratchasima."

In broad view, Tour Eiffel or Great wall,Pyramid are considered great monuments in human history.

Those were replicated and bulit all around well known countries and attractiions.

Why worried if Thai wanted to build one or 100 of Preah Vihear or Angkor Wat ,Angkor Thom??

That way the world tourists are not stupid and the keen ones will seek out the originals.

It's a flattery for Khmer art and architect ingenuity.

Question, why Phnom Penh folks bought and drank Hong Kong's Johnnie Walker whiskey although they knew they were not real English product? Best how many Cambodian riches bought and believed the Hong Kong conterfeit Swiss made watches like Rado, Mido, Rolex were real stuffs.

Agree with you 9:06
The real thrill seeker's would want to view the real thing.
Not being the real thing meant.... the surrounding area, the trip to/from and the view overlooking Cambodia.
We Khmer should be flatters that the Thais is replicating one of our Historical Monument in their country.
The world will see that when Thai couldn't have the real one, that they're desperate to copy one.
Again, this'll shed more lights on their thievery image.

It will show that Thailand has ability/expertise to build Keo Prah Viharn while Cambodia only knows how to destroy & exploit it to get $$. Let's face it, how many temples restoration projects that are managed by Khmers, none. Khmers are only unskilled workers.
