Vietnam forgot to thank a Cambodian who allowed Uncle Ho to build the Ho Chi Minh trail through Cambodia?

VietNamNet Bridge - A ceremony was solemnly held in the central province of Quang Binh on May 16 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Fifty years ago Army Corps 559 (now Truong Son Civil Engineering Corporation) was assigned to open a strategic artery through the Truong Son Mountain Range to transport troops and cargo to the southern front during the resistance war against the US imperialists.

With a total length of nearly 20,000km encompassing Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, the Ho Chi Minh Trail formed a strategic transport artery, comprising 26 land routes on the eastern and western parts of the Truong Son Mountain Range, more than 1,400km of oil pipelines and a system of 6,000km long waterway transport routes.

The historic and legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail symbolised the Vietnamese people’s will and aspiration for independence, freedom and national unification, as well as the revolutionary heroism of the Ho Chi Minh Era, said Phan Lam Phuong, chairman of the Quang Binh provincial People’s Committee at the ceremony.

Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Secretariat, presented the title of the Hero of People’s Armed Forces posthumously to the collective of 8 volunteer soldiers of Company 217, Construction Board 67 of Army Corps 559, recognising their exploits in opening the artery.

Participants were treated to a special art programme “The Legend of a Road” performed by more than 300 professional and amateur artists.

The performance depicted a glorious period for the Vietnamese people and army in opening the strategic artery through the Truong Son Maintain range, the great support by the north to the south, and the victory of the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, culminating in the total liberation of the south and national unification in 1975.

Now VN has achieved almost all targets... For that Hanoi had used Ho Chi Minh trail as back bones route to supply and advance to the South VN and Cambodia.

If I were him - a Cambodian who allowed VN to build and run the trail to ruin Cambodia, I will commit suecide before my grandchildren happen to know the history.

And now he's untouchable? What a shame?

After US-Army invaded Cambodia in 1970, we all hoped, we were free and not bombarded by the US Air Force. Instead the Ho Chi Mihn Trail, the US-Army destroyed Cambodia and invited the Khmer Rouge Regime to Phnom Penh.

1057pm, thanks for the condensed historical inferences but you forgot one important fact that should precede your first sentence:

Sihanouk allowed the NVA to use Cambodian territory for the trail and bordered provinces for sanctuary during the war. He also permitted China to use Sihanoukville port to supply the NVA in those santuaries.

The actual destruction of Cambodia was done by the KR themselves who won the war in 1975. They did not win by invitation from the US.

You should not forget that the KR intended to build a new society for Cambodia.

Stop treating them like innocent bystanders.

Did the US Army destroy Ho Chi Minh Trail after their invasion in Cambodia 1970 ?
My family were in the Army of the Khmer Republic and killed by US bombs, or the Khmers citizen were Vietcong ? Later other members were killed just one day after the Khmer Rouge took Phnom Penh in 1975, because they were generals of the Khmer Army or had higher position in the government of the Khmer Republic. Others was killed or died later during the Khmer Rouge regime.
I survive, because, I was sending out of Cambodia by my parent, some time before 1970.

2:07 PM,

Thank you for being very kind to my Grand Pa. In fact, without all of your information, I came to know that my very dear GrandPa had a very dark past...

But please, do not be too harsh on him. If only, you all know how much he has been hurt, you all would sympathise with because sweet day you all will know the truth. In fact, if the truth meant to be revealed after his august death, so be it. But after his death, the truth still not coming, then I will tell you all the truth.

Until then, please have mercy on him, my GrandPa HM King Father Sihanouk. My sincere apologies for his mistakes!!!

Thank you for your kindness!

His Grand Child

213am,

Your grandpa's truth is not too hard to find. We don't need to wait for his eventual death or you to tell us.

These seemingly mysterious deeds that your grandpa did are nicely recorded in plain sight in the Vietnamese historical archives. They included many colorful if not so flattering views of your grandpa by Vietnamese leaders. From their's insights, your gradpa is quite amateurish and light-weighted politician.

Good for summer reading.

Your grandpa, former khmer king sihanouk as you referred to, is still respected and liked by the 60s & 70s generations. But to contemporary cambodians, they have lost faith in the former king. The new khmer generation are interested in social, economic and scientific developments for Cambodia. The former king's past records speak for itself so the younger khmers do not look up to the king as a role model because there many unanswered questions regarding the KR movement which led to the killing of 1.7 million khmers. We know that the former king has not been straightforward on the KR issue.

You right about the feeling of young generation. I did the same as a schoolboy, because we had a lot of other things to involve. When I am getting older and have some experience, now my thinking is different.
The king is not a role model. The king is more like a father of one family. In the modern time, the king is just a symbol of unity and the identity of the Khmer nation. I would say, Cambodia is alway our country, we are not a refugee in this part of the world.
In term of the developing excepted from all of you now. Do you think, we did not have a higher social, economical and scientific developing ? How could the Khmer people have builded many temples 1000 years ago, that we have now ? I am sure, they all have had a very high education in all fields.
We Khmer all hope, the terrible time is over, we can rebuild our country on the right tract as our Ancestors did before.
