A team of SGGP reporters recently made a trip to Cambodia to find traces of a Truong Son troop base in Yadao District, Ratanakiri Province.
We followed the trail ‘14C’ running along Po Ko River to Le Thanh International border gate to Cambodia. From the gate, we traveled some ten kilometers to get to Nu Village of Ia Khai Commune, Gia Lai Province.
In the village, there still exist two wharfs. During the war, a boatman named A Sanh (his real name Puih San) would use his boat to transport North Vietnamese troops across the river to Cambodia.
We went across the river and began to follow the western Truong Son trail (also known as the Ho Chi Minh trail) running along the river to head to O Yadao District.
We were walking on a section of the trail where, between 2000 and 2005, the Kon Tum and Gia Lai Provincial Army Section unearthed more than 100 remains of North Vietnamese soldiers.
On our way to the destination, wild sunflowers were blooming yellow on both the sides of the trail under the brilliant sun. We at last arrived at the place formerly used as a safe base for Truong Son troops 40 years ago. The site is just some ten kilometers from the Vietnamese border and 74 kilometers from the center of Ratanakiri.
We went to border post 721 nearby and asked Commander Phan Dinh Thanh, commanding officer, to ask if he had any idea about the accurate location of the base.
Cdr. Thanh replied, “In 1984, in a patrol, jointly organized by the soldiers of military post 721 and those of Cambodian military post 623, we found a section of the trail and a station for Truong Son troops located at the border landmark of 271 on Cambodian land (or 272 on Vietnamese land). The trail paralleled with the twin stream, which flows into Pako River.”
He added, “On the trail, we still found the chains of tanks, oil pipelines, house frames and cooking stoves. We guessed that such things had belonged to a commo-liaison of the 559 Army Corps.”
We went with first lieutenant Huynh Van Sy of border post 721, who led us to the area where the base was said to have existed. Things have changed with time. Many forests around the site have now been transformed into green paddy fields, but the old Khmer villagers who lived through the war in the region still remembered the base and the North Vietnamese soldiers.
Lt. Sy led us to a house on stilts made from precious wood standing in the center of the village to meet Seo Go, a 65- year old local man. In the 1970’s, he was head of the village.
Seo Go said, “During the war, the troops were garrisoned in the forest, a kilometer from the village to the east. They usually came to the village to give help to the people. Sometimes, they also gave us food. There was also a large hospital for Truong Son soldiers in the forest, about a two day walk from the village.”
What Seo Go said helped us locate the site of Truong Son troops’ base in O Yadao District. We said goodbye to him and followed his directions to the site.
At the site, we could not find any trace of the trail because grass, bushes and trees had grown wildly. We could do nothing, but stand silently to remember thousands of soldiers who had fallen on the western Truong Son road for the cause of independence and freedom.
We left, pondering about the changing fortunes of life. Truong Son Mountain, the roof of Indochina, still emerges from the forests, the Poko River still flows from Cambodia into Vietnam, but the many historical sites on Truong Son Trail, if not found and restored in time, will be forever taken back by the forests from which it was born.

Those were Youn named Youn, how about those Youn in Khmer names who lived with Khmers mostly provinces Kg Thom, Kg Cham..? Ly Ngoc Yiep lived in Kg Thom.

King Sihanouk asked both parties Communist and Capitalist to recognize Cambodia as neutral, but both US and Vietnam rejected. (Read achive Cold War at State Dept).
Pro_Ho Chi Minh were almost everywhere in Cambodia and Laos and some in Thailand.
When Ho Chi Minh received billion of dollars from Soviet to take Cambodia and Laos, and when US had to fight to keep Thailand from falling to Communist (in achive), Cambodia was just a pawn. King Sihanouk went to China that was the only option to save his country from the threat.
Still many CIA believed that Sihanouk created Lon nol and New group of KR to join the old group of peasant KR created by Vietnamese Hanoi.
Some believed the King was advised by China. The King had his advisors just like other leaders.
The Vietnamese had their million of people learning Khmers fluently to replace Khmers and they do well.
Cambodian people many are still too ignorance including Tith Naranhkiri, a self loading Cambomerica.

Why should we ask the questions to the former Prime Minister and former King Sihanouk.
Before 1970 we got every thing almost free. We just enjoyed our youth life in Cambodia. Of course we had bad feeling about the US-Vietnam war. Almost every hour we heard the Bombs outside of the border.
We all had our freedom, peace go to school. That what we wanted. We all were crazy, but still smart enough to know from the bad effect of the war. We understood well, the US Army have to leave and go back home one day. "The ship come and go and leave the port." Who care about those stupid war. You think, we should send the Khmers to fight and die for ?
All former Khmer leaders tried to do the best and protect the Khmers, kept out of the war. Of course General Lon Nol tried to do the same, but he only had some wrong and bad people around.
Shihanuke claimed that he did the right thing to help Youn at the time to fight US, but he almost got his head off his neck too. That was the bigest mistake he made that brought all the mess till now. Khmer would have been like Singapore if he was just stay neutral. What he got from Youn now, their ASS right on his face. You can't compare Cambodia with Singapore. Geographical and political situation were different and much more complicate for Cambodia, because of the war between Vietnam and USA. Singapore although do not have direct border with other countries or with Vietnam and Thailand. You need to know a little more the situation of Singapore before 1965. Who was the first supported of Singapore ?
. . .but the blames must still be placed upon King Sahanouk for not staying in Paris and shut up, because he was the one who made mistakes by allowing Vietcong to use the Khmer land as their military sanctuary to fight a war against the south. If he would never go to join the KR, the country wouldn't went down hill right straight to hell like it is today. Instead of not accepting mistakes he had made, he shifted the total blames to Marshall Lon Nol, who was just a scapegoat.
How could Lon Nol win that war if King Sihanouk, whom most Khmer loved, took side with KR. I was just like most youths in that era, having the favour for Sihanouk until I joined the Republic Army in late 1970. From then on I no longer like Sihanouk, because he was and is a traitor of his own conscience: he killed his own people and yet never admit his mistakes. What a coward is he!!!

You have to go back before 1970, and before the existence of Sihanouk, how Viets prepared to replace Khmers with new Khmers like Ly Ngoc Dinh now Ly Anthony Diep. Narnahkiri Tith is one of his allies.
The past the Viets didn't change their names but the new system the Viets learned Khmers from Vietnam before they come to Cambodia to be Khmers.

I don't know his origin, but from what I have read on his newspaper so far, I can tell that he has more frofessionalism as a journalist than Men Bunna or Richard Nhim, though he might not have been for it. from study history, i don't think cambodia was neutral as they declared back then. how does anyone explain the ho chi minh trail and the sihanouk trail in cambodia? the vietcongs were getting helps from cambodia regime then under prince sihanouk. we all know that. the vietcongs were no more than a guerrila fighting forces who used the tactics hit and run against the more modern, sophisticated US forces then. and i give a lot of credit to cambodia for helping the vietcongs to triumph that eventual caused the US military to finally withdrew from the entire southeast asia. the war was going nowhere as US can't really invade cambodia to chase out the vietcongs who were obviously hiding and using cambodia and to some extent laos to fight against the americans. i think it was the mistake of prince sihanouk policy that eventually caused the KR regime to come to power after the US withdrew from the then lon nol gov't, began the their reign of terror all across cambodia, all because of the mistake of one man, prince sihanouk who were a "mercurial" leader that allowed the commy vietcongs to use cambodia as sanctuary to fight against the american. everybody knew that, no more secret! from all of this lesson, i hope cambodia will learn from the mistakes leaders can make because leaders are human too, you know. it was all about bad policy that prince sihanouk made that cost cambodia and khmer people dearly when the stupid KR took over in 1975 that became one of the world most atrocious regime perhaps only matched by the nazi of germany during world war II. please study history, it is very interesting to know. thank you.

Why would Sihanouk create the 50/50 strategy by having Lon Nol and Pol Pot? Clearly, as you have been implying all along with your posts here that Sihanouk and you(?) knew well that the Americans would never win against the advancement of the communist block during that period of time, why would Sihanouk be palying both sides? And you knew well the consequences - millions of dead Khmers.
So, the bottom line remains the same after all these years and the costs of human lives - Cambodia will always be a vassal of a Viet that could either be an ally of the US, or of China. Anyone could see how the current regime is playing the balancing acts to stay alive. This does not look good.
One last question, why Sihanouk would never come out strongly and admit his one (strategic?) mistake of siding with the murderous KR and express some regrets/apologies to clear all this??? Is that becuse he does not want to rock his China rice bowl? But realistically, how long will he still be relevant to what China thinks of him?

There is no need to expose the facts that China was behind Sihanouk, and Sihanouk behind Pol Pot/Khmer Rouge, any elementary student who can read can understand this part of the history. And, it is obvious that the Viet and US stand to benefit from the current KRT. But morally, Sihanouk has to admit the errors and address the responsibility. Otherwise, even in his grave, the controversy will live on. He is beyond the point of being useful for China by now. There are new players in the theaters now. While I could understand how you see China as the emerging world superpower, I could see how the same mistake could be made again.
