A delegation of the Cambodian members of parliament has asked the U.S government to forfeit $300 million of debts that Cambodia owed since the early 1970s, reports Khmer Sthapana.
A delegation led by Mr. Cheam Yeap, an MP from the ruling Cambodian People's Party, visited America from 30th May t0 8th June and has asked the officials from the U.S State Department to cancel the debts which were owed by the Lon Nol regime since 1972. The U.S officials have told them that the request will be passed on to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for consideration.
Mr. Cheam Yeap said that the original debt was $160 million but due to compounded interests for the last 37 years, the debts have doubled to $300 million.
During the 1980s, under the Heng Samrin regime, Cambodia had borrowed about $1,000 million from Russia. Cambodia had already asked Russia to cancel that debt, but so far has not received an answer from the Russian government yet.
Cambodia was said to be heavily in debted to China as the Khmer Rouge regime was said to have borrowed heavily from the Chinese government during their 3 year-rule in the 1970s.

Those money borrowed from US were used to bombed Cambodia at that time and helped set up Khmer rouge regime. Oh my.... I could not believe that i have to pay back including interests the money that were used to destroy my beloved country and almost erase is identity.

Those money were used to fight yuons invaders that sihanouk invited them in the country ,and also to stop the khmer rouge from taking over.

I simply think, therefore I believe that the past owing American money is not primarily concerned for the Khmer people and the next generation of her children, because American was offically lost the war. Otherwise, our primary concern is who will be inevitably paid the additional new debts of Russia, China, South Korea, India, Australia... and more, in which the CPP's regime keeps continuing to borrow money from these countries?

Lon Nol owed only $160 million. Heng Samrin owed Russia $1,000 million and now Hun Sen will owe China more than $1,000 million already. So who is going to pay Hun Sen and Heng Samrin's debts? It will be our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dear Sir,
Please be sure that the 160 million USD were the debt from the US supported Lon Nol Regime in the devastated civil war which led to the KR Genocidal Regime which killed more than 5 million Cambodians and foreigners. The interest is 140 million USD. The total sum is 300 million USD.
The US government should show a good-will to eliminate this due debt of the poor Cambodian people. It is also a role model for the Russian Federation Government to follow this act of forgiveness.
These debts were nothing for the Cambodians except the destruction of the country by the civil war.

Cambodia had been in hell and lost 2 millions people during the big three's game of death. Therefore Russia, China and America should not look at Cambodia just with their eyes, but also with their hearts.
