Khmer Krom communities residing in Cambodia have commemorated the 60th anniversary of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territory to Vietnam on the 4th of June 60 years ago, reports Deum Ampil.

1,949 Buddhist monks and thousands of Khmer Krom people living in Cambodia have joined the commemoration service at Wat Botum Pagoda in Phnom Penh.

There were representatives from the royal palace, the opposition parties and from the Funcinpec Party, but the government didn't send any representatives to join the commemoration service.

My hat off to Khmer Krom for making great efforts to remember the loss of Kampuchea Krom. They never forget Kampuchea Krom and the oppression from the Viets.

Why would anyone put themselves in this quagmire?

Interestingly enough, June 4th also the concurrence of Thursday commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests. How interesting! Yet, I'm relatively unenthralled, because everyone still does not understand and acknowledge that Khmer Krom is part of Vietnam.

There's a major difference between "determination" and "independence."

You can certainly be determined, but you do not necessarily be independent.

In 1949 the French parliament, with the majority of the MPs, wanted to hold a referendum in Kampuchea Krom for people living there to decide whether they want to live under Cambodian rule or Vietnamese rule, but it was the French government who decided to cede the territory to Vietnam on 4th June 1949. How said and painful that is.

If the referendum was held probably Kampuchea Krom is under the Cambodian rule until today.

Is there a legal mean, according to the international laws, for us to challenge that decision and have it nullified?

PPU,

We already knew who you are, but it is interesting to see that you finally reveal your true identity –Vietnamese. You seem to have extensively studied Khmer culture and characters. Just as your ancestors and uncle Ho did, you try to blend in among Khmer people in order to change their view on Vietnam. I must admit that you have done an excellent job trying conquer the heart of Khmer people.

But there is a key point that neither your ancestors nor you have understood about Khmer people. No matter what you say or do, WE, KHMER PEOPLE, WILL NEVER TRUST YOU. How can we after what you did and are doing to us?

That mistrust and sentiment have anchored in every Khmer heart since his birth. We have this expression – “A wolf can preach all day long, but when the night falls the rabbits never trust it”

PPU (Phu Phuc Unh), hello again my ex-gay lover. You need to forgive yourself and your uncle for what he did to you. Yes, he did raped you when you were a little boy turning you gay, but you should not feel that way toward all of your Khmer people. Eventhough I am Youn, I have a lot of good Khmer friends. Therefore, you should not be ashamed of being gay and Khmer.

Hey Folks!

I've found out that Kampuchea Krom is on the pending in French Parliament or court. Sihanouk have requested the French court to review this case over again but coincidently Khmer got into war from the early 70s and on. Now since Cambodia working toward stability we have to request the French court to revive this case again. They said the case is more likely to be review.

I am happy to hear this.
Bravo! Khmer!!!

If you want to know more please do research. Like you know nowaday is easy for us with this technology.

In 1856, after the French occupation of the provinces of the East Cochinchina, always through the intermediary of the Consul of Singapore, S.M. King ANG DUONG sent another letter and present to the Emperor Napoléon III, in a manner of protest, while drawing his attention over the territory of Cochinchina as Cambodian land, and while asking him not to receive from the Annamese King any territorial offer that was taken away from Khmer territory. Below is the content of the 1856’s letter extracted from the history of Thailand, 4th reign, 2394 to 2411 of the Buddhist era) and translated in French.

Some years later, in 1864, when S.M. King NORODOM paid a visit of admiral de Lagrandière in Saigon in company of Lieutenant Doudart de Lagrée, he had expressed his ardent desire to see France returned to Cambodia the three provinces of Vinh Long (Vinh Long, Sadec, and Travinh), Chaudoc (Chaudoc, Long Xuyen, Cantho and Son Trang) and Hatien (Hatien, Rach Gia and Bac Lieu) and the treaty of 1862 – nil and void since it is the fate of the Cambodian provinces, ever recognized as Annamese, ceded to Annam with no knowledge of Cambodia. He received a promise over the matter and went back convinced for a return in October 1864 to the Cambodian homeland the provinces that had been once detached (Cambodians of Cochinchine, G., Barrault) .

But in 1867, the Cambodian uprisings for the independence of Cochinchina, that was secretly supported by the Court of Hue, had brought France to occupy these three provinces and to evade the promise made through Admiral de Lagrandière’s word to S.M. NORODOM and to remain silent to the painful protests of the King (les Cambodgiens de Cochinchine, G., Barrault).

France directly bears the responsibility for the lost and suffering of Khmer Krom. As such, she is morally obliged to fix the problem.

To all Khmer compatriots in France, please take a lead to send some form of message or request the current French government to revise the issue and get a fair and just resolution.

Together, France will listen to our request.

Mr. Hun Sen, your government are welcome to joint the petition.

Everyone should not be so enthralled and enthusiastic about the event, because the independence will never occur. In my estimation is that it will only transpire when the the U.S. becomes 49th state (of course, absence of Hawaii).

8:01pm, I'm not sure if there is a legal channel that we can take to reclaim the territory because at the time the International Court of Justice didn't exist yet. Even if ICJ existed at the time I don't think it has the jurisdiction to judge the case because the territory of Kampuchea Krom has a long history of Vietnamese rule- I think Vietnam took control of the region in around the late 1600s.

But if the Khmer Krom fight hard- through peaceful means- I think they can achieve some sorts of self-determination and eventually statehood just like Kosovo, East Timor, Palestine etc.
