Phnom Penh - Cambodia's former king Norodom Sihanouk will return to his homeland for a two-month visit after being successfully treated for cancer in Beijing, according to a handwritten message on his personal website. The 86-year-old retired monarch said he would return to Cambodia in July to stay at a royal residence in the northern city of Siem Reap.
"Between July 9 and September 2009 I shall have the honor and the joy to live in Cambodia among my beloved relatives," he said.
But Sihanouk said he would have to return to Beijing after two months to continue his medical treatment.
He announced last week that he had beaten a third bout of cancer after his Chinese doctors successfully treated him for B-cell lymphoma, which attacks blood cells crucial to the body's immune system.
Sihanouk abdicated and was replaced by his son Norodom Sihamoni in 2004, but the king-father remains an important figure in Cambodian politics.
He was appointed king by Cambodia's French rulers in 1941, but in 1955 Sihanouk abandoned the throne to become prime minister.
After being overthrown in a military coup in 1970, Sihanouk sided with the Maoist Khmer Rouge, who came to power in 1975 and oversaw the deaths of up to 2 million people until Vietnam invaded in 1979.
He was forced out of office again and remained virtually imprisoned in the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh during most of the Khmer Rouge's rule.
Sihanouk returned to the throne in 1993, but frequently traveled to Beijing for treatment for a range of illnesses.

can you compare between thai king and khmer king? in thailand the thai people do not dare to talk something bad about the king,,,

Here are the differences between khmer KING and THAI king.
khmer king believed in COMMUNIST.He rather make friend with chairman MAO,HO CHI MING, KIM IL SUNG etc...Thai KING does not.
Khmer KING is a womanizer,Thai king is not.
Khmer king love politic,Thai king does not.
Had khmer king behave somewhat like Thai king,He will be revere as god or the symbol of the nation, and can be count on in time of need.But khmer king(sihanouk) is nothing but a traitor who at one time appeal to foreigner( communist yuon) to come and slaughter his own people .

Revision: Thai king does involved in politics. His hand soaked with Thai blood in every coup since he's King. He's not that revere if you only know the dark side behind the close door. I have many well-educated Thai peers who live in the state that don't respect much of HIM.

-Thailand is the US ally, both US and Thai had: Siam-US-treaty since 1788. Thailand is under the US protection. Look for US Air Force based in Thailand. UK is also part of the US because of Malaysia.
-The US quitted war in Vietnam: look for Cold WAR and the documents in the State Department in reference to the threatening upon Cambodia by China and Soviet while Ambassador Kimny was leaving the US. While Soviet heavily supported Vietnam, and the Viet Minh were already had its roots deep inside Cambodia society, and the US & UK would eventually abandon Indochina region: look up for the problems inside the US (Mass demonstrations and Congress debate), King Sihanouk head to China, and his loyal country man Lon Nol stood with the US. You have to do a lot of search and to put all puzzles back together to figure out why King Sihanouk, LOn Nol and Khieu Samphan had to do to safe Cambodia. Understand why every superpower want Cambodia to be just a transit or pawn??
-Thai King is a puppet of Capitalism and he is living behind the military dictator under the US protection. He has nothing to compare with King Sihanouk.
If Bhumibol were King Sihanouk, Bhumibol would not have lived until this day. He'd have been shot to death like he did to his brother, King Mahidol for the throne.
His 35 now 30 Billion USD will be flat by the Communist of Soviet-China-Vietnam combined. Bhumibol couldn't stop the Communist, but the US/UK kept it safe.

Thai people had to raise one bath each Thai to pay the lawyers at International court while Bhumibol & Sirikith's money has been kept safe at somewhere in the foreign banks. At the end King Sihanouk defeated Bhumibol so bad.
To keep Thai people stay blind, under control the Rightists like Abhisit use Bhumibol to prosecute the opposition leaders, and that is Lese Majesty Law.
-King Sihanouk is Genius Politician whereas Bhumibol is lucky to be a puppet King who lacks of character and wisdom.
-For a safeguard of Cambodia King Sihanouk managed to keep his small State alive inspite of the attacks by these extreme ignorant left-rightists. I say King Sihanouk is a thousand times above Bhumibol, Bhumibol is a man has no character no wisdom but a tyrant King of Thailand.
