BANGKOK (AFP) – Thailand's government has vowed to get tough with protesters loyal to fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, as the capital is bracing for the biggest rally since bloody riots two months ago.
Bangkok police said more than 3,000 officers and 1,000 soldiers would be on hand to guard government offices, as they predicted up to 50,000 Thaksin loyalists could gather in the capital's historic quarter from 4pm (0900 GMT).
Deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who travelled to Cambodia Saturday, said he had drafted a document to invoke an internal security law that gives more power to the army in case the rally turns sour.
But he said that the national police chief would oversee the situation for now and ensure the protesters did not block access to government offices.
"The government will decisively enforce the law. We will make sure that all government buildings are not sealed off," Suthep, in charge of domestic security, said.
Major General Suporn Phansua told AFP that police estimated 30,000 to 50,000 protesters, mostly from Bangkok and surrounding provinces, would show.
The group, known as "Red Shirts" because of the colour they wear, said they would stay at the site until dawn on Sunday to demand that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolves the House and calls fresh elections.
The Red Shirts stormed a key Asian summit on the Thai coast on April 11, forcing its cancellation, before rampaging through the capital, leaving two people dead and 123 injured, and prompting Abhisit to declare emergency rule.
Protesters clashed with security forces in Bangkok over two days but finally dispersed after troops surrounded them and threatened to move them by force.
British-born Abhisit is currently on an official visit to China and due to return late Saturday.
Since Thaksin's ouster in a coup in 2006, Thai society has been deeply split between his supporters among the largely rural poor and the powerful Bangkok cliques in the palace, military and bureaucracy.
Thaksin, currently living in Dubai to escape a jail sentence for corruption, is due to telephone Saturday's rally in the evening.
He has made repeated addresses to his grassroots supporters in the kingdom's northeast in recent months, telling them he is homesick and wants to return to work in Thailand.

Don't talk to those Mongrel Khmers. Thai people are the true Angkor descendants. Since the Siam invasion during the 15th century, Angkor was abandoned, and all the Khmers were moved to Bangkok, the new capital. The existing Khmers who formed a new nation during the 19th century were the small tribes and other minority from Viet Name. They had no specific culture and adminstration system and record at all before the French came in.
They just proclaimed themselves as Khmer because of the strong support from the French to undermine the expansion of Britain through Thailand, otherwise, there would be no Cambodia in the world map.
Topple Hun Sen and give Sam Raing Sy a hand would end the matter. Look, Hun Sen is not right man for Cambodia, Sam Raing Sy will be closer to the US-our strong ally. Ask CIA for the strategy, they succeeded once in 1970, it would work again.
Sam Raing Sy would be much better than Lon Nol who could barely speak English.

Don't talk to those Seim Yellow Shirts. Khmer people are the true Angkor descendants. Topple Seim King and the Yellow Shirts and give Cambodia a hand would end the matter. Look, Hun Sen is right man for Cambodia, Sam Raing Sy will be a loser to the US-our strong ally. Ask CIA for the strategy, they lose Vietnam war once in the 1970, it wouldn't work again.

Thailander
4:10 PM and 8:33PM,
You two aren't Thais.
Losing hope
Dear Thai in RED!
You must stand up and fight this current government, there's will be no peace and prosper for RED SHIRT people, as long as these current government controlling Thailand....we must get rid of Abhisit Vejjajiva and his parties, let's kick them out!! and bring back your prosperity!
4:10 PM you are totally wrong!!! What you say just the twist and fake Thai history that was created by Chackry Dynasty in the political purposes.
If the Khmer nowadays are not from the Khmer ancestors and Angkor's descendant, they can not speak and read Khmer.
You can tell a lie to your thais, but not the world.
I AM FEEL SORRY THAT THAI IS VERY CONFUSED NATION!!!!
GO TO SEE YOUR ANCESTOR'S CHILDREN ARE ONE TRIBE IN SOUTHERN OF CHINA NOW !!!!
During the French colony, there was no tertiary education in Cambodia. If someone wanted to study French they had to travel to Saigon to complete the high school education there first before going to France. Alternatively, if comeone chose to study Khmer or Buhdism, they had to travel to Bangkok. Thai and Cambodia at two hundred years ago were using the same character. Today's khmer is derived from from ancient Khmer Angkor, which was the same root of the Thai language today.
Cambodian people think they are using the right Khmer language, but that is wrong, I can assure the virtually every Khmer today can't read the Ancient Khmer language depicted on the stones in Angkor. This is the same situation happen in Thailand.
Look the ancient Khmer music today, there is no specific record about the evolotion of Khmer music. Rather most of the musics were copied from Thai, such as the socall 'Pleng Siam'
Phnom Penh's royal palace was just built less than 200 years ago. And the most of the achitechture design was mimic the Thai royal palace, and much smaller. This means the then Khmer Kingdom was just a satellite state or a buffer state separate Thailand and Vietnam.
Because the majority of Cambodians toady perceived that it is a shame to call themselve a mongrel race, so they deny the history, a fact that seldom discussed in all levels in Cambodian society.
Go red shirt go reclaime your right voices, Abhi-Shit is made coup against you all support by Siamese military leader Mr.Pumibol Abdulyadetj.
To 8:18 AM,
You must pull all of these dirty and cheap tricks, out of Thai's history book taught in Thai elementary schools, to promote Thai nationalism and hatred towards neighboring countries.
Go find it out youself from the Thai Universities (Chulalongkorn, Thammasat...) on cultural study projects and tons of other Thai cultural websites. Numerous other documents available at your finger tips, from international acclaimed academies. You have access to the internet just search for it.
It's shameful that you and Thailand try so hard to pull out all these dirty tricks to invert the history.
All the points you are trying to make sounds like you are not educated enough to really understand anythings.

9,51 am,
Your texts seem more like an loser's assault rather than evidence to disprove my claims.
You thought yourself as an educated, this I would not argue. But I hope you can come out some evidence to disprove my claims.
To 8:18AM
That is true that cambodia and Loa no university school during the frech colony because the french did not like cambodia and loa that much.
Thai adopted the khmer language by one of the Thai king during 1400s by using simplying to make more simple...khmer has her own language more than thousands of years and there are different stage to khmer language
1- khmer language before angkor era
2- khmer language during angkor period
3 - khmer language after angkor
4 - modern khmer language from 1900s to now
Khmer is under the invasion of vietname and thai since 1490 after the fall of angkor period and therefore most of the name that Thai has copied from khmer before are widely used...the real name of Pleng Siem is called Pleng Pin Peart - only the stupid one that called it Pleng Siem - because they don't really know...
The Thai is a traitor and a thief to khmer because at the time khmer has help Thai fighting agaist burma but once it is succeeded that thai turns back on khmer and capture Krong Thep Moha Norkor (which is later turns into Krong Tep Mohanakorn - by Thai and change it to Bangkok right now).....
Most people are of ethnic Mon and Khmer in BangKok and thai only make up a minority in thailand which over 5 o 6 generation those people think themself as thai because of the oppression of freedom and language.
Bangkok is also a khmer city -
Thai has adopted khmer language and most of them are the same especially the terms used in the royal palace ...Most of the name and location in thailand right now are originally khmer names which only amended to make sound like thai...
Thai people are thief - that why khmer called them as Siem
Thai people are rude and dishonest
One more things that thai should know is that the culture and architectures are all copies from khmer...
During the invasion or the fall of khmer city Long Vek in around 1590? thai has taken all our scholars, architect engineers, doctors, professors and march them to Bangkok...thay have been forced to work for the Thai
i think you should do more research about the history of loa, khmer and burma which in turns seems to make sense than the history of thai who often twisted and teach their kids about the hatred of their neightbours....
11.04 am,
You are right at the detail but make a mistake at the conclusion.
It seems that the every Cambodian agree that Thai had raided Cambodia and taken all the valuable men and women and left only the scatered minority of Khmers.
The conclusion should be those Khmers ended up to live in Thailand whereby they also brought together with their culture and language and skills which later evolved into the modern Thailand.
Thai ciriculum of course teach anything which favour Thailand. This too practice in the same way in Cambodia. Your claim of Thailand tech their kinds how to learn the hatred towards neiboghring countries. But too me, Cambodian ciriculum isn't different. I'm sure you grew up with the environment of people always teach you how to fight with Viet Nam and Thailand too.
Every country has to be vigilent toward its neighbor. The Scotish and the English, they still do not trust eachother even though they have united for so long.
Interesting that Thailand is politically much more unstable than Cambodia.
