Thailand to seek review of Preah Vihear's World Heritage Site listing ... Abhisit is another Siamese sore-looser?

Thailand to seek review of Preah Vihear

Thailand will ask the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (Unesco) to review a decision to register Preah Vihear temple on the Thai-Cambodian border as a world heritage site as proposed by Cambodia, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday.

Last year, the World Heritage Committee registered the Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage site, as proposed by Cambodia, and asked Phnom Penh to set up the International Coordinating Committee to preserve and develop the temple.

Mr Abhisit said the cabinet on Tuesday resolved to submit a letter to the World Heritage Committee which will soon convene a meeting. At the meeting, Cambodia is expected to report on the development of its work to preserve and develop the temple ruins.

He said a Thai world heritage committee led by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti will tell the meeting that the registration of Preah Vihear temple as a world heritage site has brought about conflict and losses and this may have gone against Unesco's objectives of having world heritage sites.

The prime minister said a world heritage site is supposed to be an area where traces of culture and history are preserved for tourists to see and admire them. But, the Preah Vihear of that status has caused more conflict between the peoples of Thailand and Cambodia.

Mr Abhisit said Thailand is firm to its stand that Preah Vihear should be registered as a world heritage site jointly by Thailand and Cambodia.

"I want to see the temple a peaceful area so that the peoples of the two countries can jointly benefit from it, which is of high historical importance," said the prime minister.

The Foreign Ministry in May warned Unesco about activities of officials and experts at the controversial Preah Vihear temple.

Virachai Plasai, head of the ministry's Treaties and Legal Affairs Department reaffirmed with the chief of Unesco's information and knowledge management unit, Clive Wing, that UN officials and experts could travel through disputed areas at the temple only with permission from Thai authorities.

The ministry informed Unesco in March that only the main building of the Preah Vihear temple was inscribed as a world heritage site, where the UN and the World Heritage Committee could work.

The wider promontory, cliff and cave were not included - so Unesco officials could not pass through these areas without Thai permission.

The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia but Thailand claims surrounding areas. The disputed area of 4.6 square kilometres has not been demarcated.

Dear Editor,

After I have read carefully your article posted June 17, 2009, originally published by the Bangkok Post, the best conclusion i could give regarding the Thai government is as follows:

- The Thai SHIT Families, including PM AbiSHIT and FM KaSHIT Phirom, are the black sheeps who keep bringing shame to Thailand, the country originally named Land of Smile. It's now become the land of the SHAMELESS GREEDY THAI.

These individuals'behaviors reflect the Thai weakest and the worst leadership in resolving its own political conflict in decades.

So, the country should change its name to SHAMELESS BEAST!

Dear Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva,

Please remember that Preah Vihear Temple was built by the Khmers people since the 10th century (before the appearance of the Thai Kingdom in the 14th century). It belongs to Cambodia since then. Why you want to control its? This a real hegemony or an invader? For example: This is my car, you cannot control it. Prasat Phnom Roung built by the Khmer ancestors but now it belongs to you (Thais). We, Cambodians cannot ask for a joint control? And many other Temples in Thailand were built by the Khmer people.

Our ancestors could build more than a thousand Temples in the whole of Cambodia. Why you think that we cannot take care of those Temples which are so precious for Cambodians. And you want a joint control over the Preah Vihear? We are not so stupid to accept such a joint property?

Thank you for your kind consideration over this opinion.

I really don't understand about the Thai keep bragging about something is not belong to them geographically, historically and politically. They had lost to Cambodia during the 1962 UN court.

They can't insisting for join or share about this temple at all.

There is no way that UNESCO is being bias to the Khmer due to proofs and evidence.

Khmer had spread evidences throughout Thailand geographically. Lucky that Khmer didn't claim all temples in Thailand. Khmer just want to keep what is inside Khmer right now. So, Thai should stay away from this temple.

Abhishit should not continue bring shame to Thailand.

KhmerThai,

I don't think UNESCO made wrong decision for this case. They have sufficient evidence to put this temple in the list.

Thai should be happy for Khmer to protect this site. Instead Thai is acting arrogant such as recently that US remove Khmer and Laos out of the the black list. Thai didn't applaud them instead Thai got upset.

What ashame!!!!

True! If Thai think UNESCO made mistake then the UN must demand the Thai to return all Khmer provinces back to Cambodia too.
