Would You Be More Likely to Visit Angkor Wat if it was Illuminated At Night?

The 12th century temple complex known as Angkor Wat is by far the most popular tourist site in Cambodia, drawing a million travelers a year to walk among its austere columns and soaring spires, many of which are overgrown with tree roots that resemble the tentacles of an octopus. Hoping to wring a few more dollars out of tourists - and enhance the visitor experience, of course - the government recently announced that it is considering installing artificial lighting throughout the ancient city so the temples can be open at night. The AP points out that visitors are typically ushered out of the area at sunset, and the new lighting will enable the park to stay open as late as 8:30 p.m.

Conservationists, however, are less thrilled with the idea. They worry that the area's resources - particularly the already overtaxed underground water supply - aren't sufficient to support an influx of tourists, who will require roads, hotels, and all the other amenities that go along with the tourism industry.

I can see their point, and would be sure to tread as lightly as possible, but I kind of like the idea of seeing Angkor Wat at night. I imagine some of the statues, carvings, and shadows would be pretty amazing, particularly after happy hour. And hopefully they'd use really environmentally-friendly lighting, like LED lights, in a smart and innovative way, creating lots of trippy, dramatic angles. But I'd also hope they left most of the park undisturbed, all the better to retain its unique position at the nexus of natural and supernatural.

Through out all day, Angkor Watt is welcoming tourists from many counries around the world. Six PM is the time every body start leaving and by dark, Angkor What is left so lonely in the dark. It's kind of sad. Some people, including my children when visitting Angkor years ago, mentioned about the idea of Angkor Watt be lighted up. To me light up Angkor is not a bad idea, as long as they do it the proper way.

Nature is beautifu. But if man want to install lighting, I may suggest to prevent an eye sore to the temple. I would installed projection light from the ground up to the ceilling instead of light directly from above down to the ground. Instead of seeing the natural temple, you'll see the expose light fixture and wiring overhead. If projecting from below, they should carv and home made the stone that look alike to the existing temple and recess and hide all lighting and conduit wire so it would blend in the temple stone. And a low voltage like 12 volts DC would be safe from electricute and proper ground fault interupt(GFI) to the wiring system.

If Angkor Wat was like the Eifel Tower, I would like to visit at night with the lighting of the structure. Angkor Wat is completely different from modern structures/monuments.

Let the Thais build the replicas of Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear, with built-in neon linghts like Pat Pong street in Bangkok...

There should be protesting cause angkor wat is owned by youn. Angkor wat belongs to all khmer and not one youn.

UNESCO said the lighting is fine so it should be fine. I believe i benefit the Cambodian people especially those in Siem Reap who are at risk of losing their jobs due to the very low number of tourist arrivals this year. The lighting I hope will attract more tourists.

If you want to decorate temple why don't you all bastard try to rehabilitate the fallen/ruined stone that erode the original shape of temple like Bayon face or fallen stone at dragon south or north gate of Angkor Thom temples and others temple stones which scattered on the ground? You bastard just want to sell angkor temple at night that is why you install light, you mother fucker. After you get money from selling ticket then all your mother fuckers family will died from car crash or lightning strike your whole family even baby in your mother fucker wife or daughter. ALL YOUR FAMILY WILL BADLY AND SERVERELY DIED MOTHER FUCKER. YOUR DAUGHTER AND WIFE ARE TAXI GIRL....

Ah hun sen regime tries to find the ways to destroy Cambodia as much as he can. His regime is a Hanoi regime and Hanoi is behind the Cambodia decision making. They have their agents every post in the government and these people are trying to destroy Khmer people.

How stupid do they think to illuminate Angkor Wat at night? They could n't suck enough money in day time into their Swiss account, so they try to suck at night time too.

What's the idiot dumb people on earth doing this.

LOOK AT THE WIRING THEY LAID OUT. IT'S AGAINST NEC CODE. LAID OUT THE WIRE ON THE GROUND FOR KILLING THE PEOPLE WHEN THEY STEP ON IT.

The main idea is trying to make more dollars by using Angkor.
Day time is enough.
