PHNOM PENH, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian government on Wednesday donated 1.2 million U.S. dollars to World Food Program to help reduce the hunger and malnutrition in this country, according to WFP statement.
The statement released Wednesday said the donated fund will help provide food assistance to over 800,000 poor rural Cambodian people affected by food insecurity brought on by last year's high food prices and this year's global economic crisis.
"WFP is very grateful for this generous contribution," said Jean-Pierre de Margerie, WFP Cambodia's representative.
According to the statement, it's the third donation from Cambodian government to WFP since 2007, but did not elaborate the total amount contributed.
Yim Chhay Ly, deputy prime minister and chairman of Council for Agriculture and Rural Development said Cambodia remains fully committed to support such objectives.
WFP is supporting Cambodia's government in its efforts to improve the food security of Cambodia through all its activities, assists nearly one million of the poorest and most food insecure people in the country.
WFP also, in addition to school feeding, implements operations in support of mother and child health, support TB and HIV patients, and project that support the creation of agricultural assets.

hey, it's called giving back to the community who help cambodia in crisis. plus, it's a good gesture to show the world that cambodia can and will contribute to humanitarian.
and by the way, stop acting surprise! why are people like you act surprise in the first place? is it because you people used to see cambodia as a poor country or something? or is it because you and your type of people did expect cambodia and the beautiful khmer people to remain poor, unchanged, third-world, begging, etc, etc... well, let me remind you people who echo the same hypocritical surprise, wake up and come visit cambodia and see for yourself; what planet did you people come from? cambodia has changed for the better, and don't be surprised again because in 10 to 20 or even 30 more years, you'll even be more surprise to know and see cambodia a fully developed, prosperous nation. get educated already for a change, would you! god bless cambodia.
Wow!!!! What's a concept?? A government donating money to a foreign nonprofit organization to help its own hungry population. Ain't this government is supposed to help its starving population in the first place. This is like me donating money to the foster parents to raise my own children and, yet, act like a very generous philanthropist. If I were the government I would be embarrassed for having so many NGOs taking care of its own responsibility. I guess Cambodia has gotten used to be a beggar country.
hey, stop whining about it! be grateful that cambodia can contribute to good cause like this donation and like sending peace keeping troops overseas. what is your personal problem. i suggest go see a psychotherapist for your personal problem, ok! good luck!
