DEADLY SIMILARITIES

Op-Ed: Alternatives Watch – 10vii09
The rule enforcement of both regimes is practically absolute; they control the government, national assembly, court, and media. Victims of the Khmer Rouge have no recourse whatsoever. Though the current regime claims its rule of law is based on a promise of the separation of powers, there are too many instances to indicate it exists only on paper. Perhaps, the only difference between these two democracies is the magnitude of the brutality they inflict on their victims.
In many aspects, similarities between the regime of the Khmer Rouge and that of the current government are rather striking. The main commonality is their overwhelming voracity for displaying their power, especially when their adversaries are weak, unorganised, or disorganised.

Both regimes justify their power grip with a type of democracy that cannot be allowed to be anarchic. The Khmer Rouge calls its regime Democratic Kampuchea and enforces its rule of law that tolerates no opposition whatsoever, real or imagined. The current regime’s commitment to its brand of democracy is unwavering. In his defence of the recent lifting of the immunity of two opposition parliamentarians, prime minister Hun Sen says, “[The] two lawmakers are stripped of their immunities... for the court to prosecute them. From now on we are strengthening democracy and the rule of law, this is not an anarchic democracy.” He insists, “Democracy must have the rule of law.”

They resort to all means, including murder, to silence dissenters. While Democratic Kampuchea uses tortures to extract from victims confessions it knows all along to be false, the current regime has lately come to favour the court system it controls to corner its target victims. Opposition leader Sam Rainsy had to apologise and promise not to accuse Hun Sen anymore of masterminding the March 1997 grenade attacks, before the government withdrew lawsuits making way for his return from exile. More recently, lawyer Kong Sam Onn sends Hun Sen his apologies after being hounded by his peer group and the prime minister out of representing opposition parliamentarian Mu Sochua in a defamation case filed by the prime minister. Kong Sam Onn also applies for CPP membership, which offers invaluable protection for his legal practice and livelihood. Opposition newspaper editor Dam Sith has just begged Hun Sen for forgiveness and freedom from all pending government lawsuits; in return, he promises to cease his publication.

Another similarity is that both regimes underestimate the unknown amidst such a raw display of internal power. Prime minister Hun Sen observes that foreigners have now become spokesmen for the opposition party, especially in the issue of land grabbing and people displacement. He may not realise, however, that the screw he puts on Cambodia is so tight that someone will stand up for the people. Hun Sen seems to forget that the Khmer Rouge regime was so totalitarian that he himself turned to a foreign intervention that many believe has remained his power base until now. Pol Pot shared the same oversights, and had to subsequently pay dearly for it.

Does the current regime do the same? The answer is obvious. Like I said, it's absurb that you moron let your political agenda to say stupid shit like this. You should be ashamed of yourself for destroying your ethics and sense of rationale and morality just to please your ego in your political likeness. Go fuck yourself, faggot.

Why are you so irate about it, if it's not true?
I just don't see it. There is no different between Pol Pot and the current government. Politically, they do killed, not as a whole, but individually to see fit their daily activities.
From your posted comment; it lead me to believe that this is indeed.....true. Otherwise, you wouldn't be crying like a bitch that you are.

If 8:19 PM cannot see it while the whole world can, the answer is a as of matter-factly obvious:

Either 8:19 PM is ah Hun Sun's people that has been harassing KI-Media readers to no end here or (to put it very bluntly) a YUON agent that wants nothing but to have Vietnam conquered Cambodia/Khmer.

And 8:19 PM is not the first nor is he the last one that sabotages KI-Media and its reader in earnest.

Hope this helps.

Can I meet that guy who opted that the current government and the Khmer Rouge are the same? I want to thank him and have a beer with him, then take the bat to the back of his neck and show him how it was done in Khmer Rouge regime.

Obviously, you idiots that think the current government is like the Khmer Rouge are a bunch of punks that wasn't even alive during that time. How many of your family members were dead during the KR and how many are dead during now? Ask your fucking parents, you ignorant punk.

You are all a disgrace and shameful Khmer waste if you think Khmer Rouge are so lovely. Maybe you are all the Khmer Rouge killers themselves that fleed to the West. I know many of you in the US, especially West Coast, the ones that are fucking stupid and live on the US government welfare money.

Hey ah Khmer Rouge overseas, how can you live with yourself knowing you killed so many people? and your sons and daughters, how can you live with yourself with parents as Khmer murders. Do the right things and expose your murderer parents, please. We need to get rid of ah KHmer rouge overseas that live along side normal khmer in the US, canada, france, australia, etc... If so desire, everyone is entitle to have a boss... by CHOICE. Thus, a dispute with our boss will only lead to a constructive result. In your case, you'll either end up demoted, dead or both.
You, you have a 24/7--365 days a year boss. LOL
Let's face it! We, in the land of opportunity are enjoying our

Ah, there you go ranting off again. Stop contradict yourself! Are you or are you not a KR. I am going to take a educated guess that you're diagnosed with a split personality. Either way, you've displayed a little kind

I was taught not to get aquainted with a stranger. So, meeting you is out of the question, especially a stranger with a bat. Sorry! He also mention that, DO NOT BRING A BAT TO A GUN FIGHT. I hope you understand.
Fortunately, none of my family members fall to your ethnic cleansing era and present day. I know you're weeping right now. LOL
I do know a OverSea Khmer Rouge that I would like to expose. He is on his way to France right now. Here's a descriptions from the InterPol: Asian male, missing an eye and a heavy smoker "preferably a Dunn Hill 555 brand."
Note, he's notorious and will kill for cigarette.
If you come in contact with this individual; DO NOT APPROACH AND AVOID EYE CONTACT. lol

Gentleman

Please be sensible that khmers who concerned about the welfare of cambodians,do not accuse govt of undemocratic. But the act of exessive power is not democratic.

I believe democracy is our common path, however grounds of rule of laws ought to be considered. And HUMAN rights and its respect is the key to achieve democracy.

As buddhists we ought not overlook these basic needs. Needs for foods, clothing, shelter and medications(Pajays 4,buddhist term). Are these priciples of life met by ordinary cambodians?

Again and again, powerful people turn public power to be their own.
Confusion of not accepting other ideas repeatly displayed in our society,in the name of 'loosing face'. This leads to reasoning and listening skills become incompetent.

It is a need for practice of Ethics.

Seeing an article like this makes me wonder whether “some” of KI bloggers and team members are a bunch of right-wing-extremists, who would would say anything, no matter how irrational it is, to satisfy their inner cynicism.

I am not sure what this Ung Bun Ang guy has been drinking laterly to come up with such an absurd comparison. Where was he went the KR committed its atrocity and over two million Khmers perished. If the current regime is as cruel as the KR, him and his entire family would have been executed before he event finishes his writing.

I am not a CPP supporter. But the more I see how absurd some of the ideas or opinions expressed by “some” of KI team members and readers, I give me reason to join CPP. And don’t worry I don’t need any bones from any party. My company already pays me a good salary and provides a good pension plan for my retirement.

Anonymous said...

5:12AM

It is your freedom to choose to join CPP or not. And also it is your freedom to tell us here about your joining CPP or not joining CPP. I think it is not KI's business to collect that data from you. KI's business is to keep informed all KI's readers with different perspectives and to pave the way of creating a hub of communication to make all Cambodians understand the importance of using "critical thinking or weighing judgment to all news" for the true benefit of their family, community and the nation.

Bun Ang, of course, he has his back up and rationale in his article. He said current government doesn't totally conduct like the KR but their propaganda of democracy is in the same mode: using the democracy and the rule of laws as the political terms in order to arrest, and jail journalists as well as to strip the parliamentary members.

So, there are many smart Khmers who are not using KR as the pretext to condemn Khmers and praise current totalitarian government. Your cynical and stigma of Khmer Rouge brutality is strongly embedded in your brain. You should go back to live in KR regime if your memory is really good about that regime.

You should not simply use past KR regime to legitimize current totalitarian government and to fool other Cambodians who has tremendously received biased media inside Cambodia.

5:12,
Awwww! Are we supposed to feel sorry for you, now that you finally commit yourself to a CPP? Words of advice, don't come to Ki-Media if you're looking for a pity. As a matter of fact, why don't you create your CPP blog so your kind can express your limited freedom of speech.
Last, please don't brag about your jobs and your retirement plan, because.... we don't give a damn.
Last I heard, Huynh sen is hiring for a......eye-seeing dog for his guidance. Are you qualify for this position? Bon voyage!

5:48AM - You and your companions are the one that trivialize Khmer suffering by comparing their suffering to current living conditions, don’t you think? Or May be you and your companions were among the most corrupted officials during the Lon Nol regime who ran away to the West after instilling the most corruption in the country, and who never lived in the KR regime to understand how much suffering Khmer people went through KR. Don’t pretend to speak for Khmers. You speak for your own cynics.

It is enough for Khmers to stop labeling each other because of their expression of freedom. Khmers should stop labeling each other of Lon Nolian, Pol Potian, or Hun Senian etc.

What Khmers should pay attention now is that Khmer Rouge regime killed people directly, but current government under the Vietnam's grip has pursued the way to kill Cambodian people indirectly.

Vietnam's proverb says "if you want to kill a tree, you don't need to cut its trunk, you just pick its leaves one by one, finally it will die and will never survive again."

Khmer Rouge tended to practices extreme policy of "eliminate them must kill all roots, trunk and leaves". But current government under Vietnam's yoke has pursued different killing machine: "eliminate them must make sure that they cannot express and exercise their basic rights and enjoy the pride of their own collective community".

Current move of Hun Sen government is like that. Saying this, am I cynical? Not. Am I labeling Khmers? Not. I am just saying the truth that some Khmers are under fear, past haunting, frightening, stigmatizing and see only the temporary peace of the death.

You sounded like one of those retarded Cambodians that goes around and brags about how great your salary/retirements are. Don't tried to impress us in Ki-Media, because we don't give a damn.
Social assistance is what your soon-to be your new leader (Huynh Sen) rely on from other donors.
Again, what I do or don't is none of your business.
I have every bragging rights just like you, but I choose not to. Because I'm not retarded.

7:12AM – Thanks for your remark and I must admit I loose my cool over some of my comments. That’s why most of the times I hate talking about internal politic. It divides rather than unite us. We have much bigger problems with the Thais and the Viets, and that where we should focus our collective efforts to resolve those issues. The Chinese says when you have a wolf at your door step, the least thing you need to worry about the fox. Any way, your remark reconfirm my strong believe that there are Khmers out there who care deeply for the country.
