Germany injects over $1 mln to Cambodia, Laos for fighting against hunger

PHNOM PENH, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Fearing with the continued impact by global economic crisis, the government of Germany has provided another 1.3 million euros (approximately 1.8 million U.S. dollars) to Cambodia and Laos to fight against hunger.

In a statement released Wednesday, German embassy in Phnom Penh said of the above total amount, one million euro was destined for Cambodia which is expected to help assist about one million Cambodians in 2009.

It said the fund was donated through the United Nations agency, World Food Program for its operation in this country.

The fund will help improve immediate food security and nutritional status of the Cambodian people while enhancing social stability through interventions in three priority areas: education, health and nutrition, and disaster risk reduction.

In April, the U.N. Office in Cambodia issued a statement saying the country's positive trends of its economy will be slowdown after it has enjoyed over decade of increase. And less demand from foreign markets and reducing of foreign direct investment have forced a mass of people losing their jobs, such as in garment and construction sectors.

The U.N. data also indicated some 80 percent of Cambodians are living in rural areas, and where many poor families depend upon migrant remittances as their major source of income.

It is, then, citing fear that Cambodia's rural poor might adopt "unhealthy" coping measures such as reducing their number of meals per day or eating less-nutritious foods, and cutting back on health services.

Safety nets in health, education, food, and work can help break the poverty cycle, it added in the statement.

According to the World Food Program, Cambodia might need 76.3 million U.S. dollars for three years project in curbing with people in crisis.

It said the project that began in January 2008 and which is due to last until the end of 2010 has, so far, received 33 million U.S. dollars or bout 43 percent of its appeal, and that Germany has donated 2.3 million U.S. dollars or 3.1 percent of the total donated fund.

i think many khmer people need help with education on eating well, and other nutritional advices for studies has shown that 95% of our good health rely solely on eating well and variety of diets, instead of depriving our body of meals and proper intake of nutrition. this is not to say that cambodia is lack of food supply, it was many of us need help in education about the importance of proper intake of nutrition for our health sake! that's all!

I always wonder what happen to those money once it leaves the donor. If there isn't a system to monitor the spending, cambodian people will get nothing. I bet most of those money go directly to the few who in charge. Nothing left for the poor. Why are some cambodian people so selfish. I'm suspecting that the root cause of this is the our education system. Since we were kid, we were never teach about the important of sharing, or contribution to the community. I was raised there, and I was never taught that, i almost got brainwash by the Viet teaching.

of course, it's in the culture, not say that all aspect of our culture is bad. i think cambodian people ought to weed out bad or unwanted culture and adopt a better thinking or better mentality that serve not only us well the whole country as well. it a culture of dependence and not enought emphasis on getting good education. people there seem to perceive that everything is absolute, meaning they think there is no flexibility. they seem to taught by the elderly to respect which is a good thing, however, they should also be taught or at least encourage to think for themselves, to learn from everybody wiser than themselves, and to stop being so greedy and selfish, not to say they should be stupidly generous either. the point is to think for themselves and by all mean do some self-educated as well. president lincoln of the US didn't even finish high school because he was from a poor family, so he educated himself by learning to read by using only candle light. according to history lesson, he read a lot and absorb new idea and was very determine to make a different without wanting anything in return from anymore; he later became one of the greatest president the USA have ever had. i think khmer people in cambodia ought to be taught or informed with this kind of inspiring story. if they just wait for other to take action, we then can't really complain about anything not being done. please be proactive and get involve in society. help make a difference for cambodia.
