PHNOM PENH, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's literacy rate among people aged 15-24 has reached 84.7 percent after years of efforts by the government, khmer newspaper reported on Thursday.
"If we consider 15 years old upwards, it has 73.6 percent of literate people. However, among this figure, there are still 26.4 percent of illiterate population, " the Kampuchea Thmei quoted Phon Hon Sin, director of informal education system of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, as saying.
And among the illiterate people, 60 percent of them are women. "Each year we helped 55,000 people to eliminate illiteracy," he said.
"The most of illiterate women have abandoned their education since the beginning of primary. Their dropout rate from primary and secondary schools is about 10 percent across the country and at the higher education, the women enrollment rate is so low and it has about 30 percent only," he said, adding that poverty is mainly the reason why they abandon education.
"Education sectors of the government opened 1,000 literacy classes and another 1,000 literacy classes were set up by organizations with supports from partners," he said.

Among the 60% noticeable number of women are already in prostitution ring or victims of the high powered official human trafficking schemes.
WE need to hear your grand idea in salvaging Cambodian women rights before ASEAN 2015 grand plan.
i think cambodia needs to really push for reform in women's rights to education because from what i understand, culture seems to be in the way of reform. i have heard from my parents and their parents that in i the past, women were discouraged to attend school because parents think they are just housewives and plus if they knows how to read or write them will write to their boyfriend and become infidel, etc... again, i'm just saying that was the psyche or thinking of that time. well, sometimes, too, it take self-discipline and perseverance as well to stay in school and be successful. who says it is easy. if it is easy, then everybody would have done it. anyway, reform is necessary here as well. i say by all mean do encourage all women or girls to stay in school and study hard. stop having this mentality that women don't need to be educated because they can get married and live off of their husbands. well, that was old thinking and is so outdated in this day and ages. everyone (male and female) needs to get education if we are to compete and survive in this new era in the world, even in cambodia for that matter! be smart, please!

that's why i often stressed paradigm shift or change because it will open up new thinking, new idea, new concept, etc... it's like being enlightened! a change in attitude goes a long way, better that is! work hard and be perseverant and be self-discipline by study hard. people can work and study at the same time, you know. get out of your comfort zone and be proactive. cry for change, for country sake and the sake of your future and children's and grandchildren's future, etc... be industrious and get rid of the co-dependent mentality that seem to exist in khmer society, especially with women and children. be independent by striving to get an education, by all means, ok! learn from everyone! be smart, too!
