Tat Marina answers questions about her current situation and living with the suffering and memories of the attack.

“Finding Face,” a new documentary detailing the life of an acid attack victim, showed in the US on Sunday, moving Cambodian and American audience members to take a stand against the crime.
The film profiles Tat Marina, a karaoke singer and mistress of a powerful government official, who was doused with acid in 1999, allegedly by a jealous wife, and nearly died a result. Over 40 percent of her body, including head and face, were burned.
“Many, many people asked what are the concrete actions that we can take to help not only on this issue of acid violence in Cambodia and worldwide, but about Tat Marina’s case,” Skye Fitzgerald, the films producer, told VOA Khmer.
The film had moved some viewers to inquire with their congressmen in the US to learn what actions can be taken in the case of Tat Marina, who now lives in the US, and whether lawmakers should more carefully consider whether donor funding is tied to human rights.
Tat Marina, who narrates the film, was present at the screening and was available for questions afterward. Dressed in dark robe with hair covered up her shoulders, Marina walked steadily to the podium as the audience vigorously applauded. She was asked about her current situation and living with the suffering and memories of the attack.
“I was happy to have received care and support from our people, other nationals, and the Cambodian Association in Portland,” she told VOA Khmer later. “I am excited that hundreds of people supported me and gave me encouragement by showing up in a large crowd.”
She had decided to cooperate with the film after initially thinking she would remain quiet, after committing a “sin.” She eventually decided to allow her story to be documented as a way to seek justice for other victims, even if it meant putting her own family at risk, she said.
The film describes the love affair between Tat Marina and Svay Sitha, an official at the Council of Ministers, who told VOA Khmer through a spokesman the attack had been difficult for him as well. He said he was victimized by the act and publicity that blamed him.
“I find it hard to believe that any logical, sane individual could possibly define himself as a victim when they themselves were instrumental in protecting the perpetrator of a crime like this,” Fitzgerald said. “If indeed he is a victim, as a member of the Cambodian government, I would think he would be motivated to ensure that justice was done for all in the case.”
That would mean implicating his former wife, Khuon Sophal, and her nephew, Khuon Vandy, who allegedly committed the attack, for arrest and prosecution, he said.
Meanwhile, US television stations have begun to show more interest in airing the film. A preview can be seen at its Web site: www.findingface.org.

Shameful of Svay Sitha that he have been claim he was a vitimize as well. He have a top position in Cambodia and he is hava wife, but he have sex with the young girl under age, what can we says is he a criminal or what?.
He the onlyone destroyed Tat Marina life, so Svay Sitha and his wife, cambodia government should bring go to the court and find the Justice for the young girl.
Once again, acid attacks are a common occurrence in Cambodia mostly happened to many cases especially the second wife or other abuse and by jalousie. When it comes to love, it does not matter who is who, they will fight to keep their men or women. In this case Cambodia is not the only one country throwing acid routine daily life. Also perhaps you or the young generation know ‘DY SAVETH’ a former famous Khmer movies actress, she had an acid attack as well, this happened since the latest 1968. She immediately went to Japan for the operation; after she got well recuperated her first film came out the earliest 1970 as ‘Adventured Life’. I hope everyone know about this.

Your comment is agree with the people who is commited crime, what else we should prevent from attacking to the young people, the wife should be attack their own husband who have wife but not enough for sex, and they have to go after other the girl or other woman.
Some of khmer men that have a bad behavior, can't not control themself, they should find a councelor for help, or some friend need to talk too.
To 1:30 AM,
What the people should do to avoid this terrible acid attack no matter what men and women should be patient, learn how to control their anger. It’s not worth. My wife she would never to hurt anyone if she knows I have another young beautiful woman. I have many young girls after me; however, I still love my wife. I don’t need a councilor due to my behavior. God! It’s Friday morning here in Cambodia, I am tired I work all night long…three more hours MAN!.
(Those who writes long sentence I won’t read it. Thanks.)

ACID ATTACK ON TAT MARINA
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed acid attack.
"On December 5, 1999, Tat Marina, age 16, was severely disfigured in an acid attack in Phnom Penh. The attack was allegedly committed by Khun Sophal, the wife of a senior government official, Svay Sitha, because she was angry her husband had a sexual relationship with Tat Marina. Neither Khun Sophal nor those suspected of being her accomplices in the attack were brought to justice. Intense media publicity compelled the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Khun Sophal for attempted murder, but the police claimed that they could not locate her, although journalists reported that she was living at home as usual."

TORTURE AND MURDER ON PRAK SITHA WHILE IN CUSTODY BY MISNISTRY OF INTERIOR OFFICIAL
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed torture and murder.
"On the night of January 16, 2003, a street youth named Prak Sitha was beaten to death at the Ministry of Interior (MOI) headquarters after he was arrested and detained by off-duty MOI officers on suspicion of theft. His body - bearing numerous injuries to the head, torso, arms, and legs - was dumped at a Phnom Penh pagoda the following morning by ministry officers, in violation of police regulations regarding deaths in custody. No criminal charges were filed in connection with this death. In December 2004, the case was cited by the UN secretary-general's special representative for human rights in Cambodia - who stated that Prak Sitha died at the ministry "following beatings by a known police officer" - as an example of a "consistent and continuing pattern of impunity" in Cambodia."

Mean Sokchea, in a drunken stupor, fired his gun and apparently mistakenly hit Put Samphors in the stomach. She was taken to a hospital but later died of her wounds. Mean Sokchea was detained by the police overnight but was then released, allegedly after intervention by Hing Bun Heang. Put Samphor's family received US$2,700 from Mean Sokchea, and the police told them that their daughter was shot while authorities were chasing robbers."

i think it helps to talking about this problem in cambodia as well as other social problems. hopeful it will help people to stand up and fight for their rights and thus brings changes to cambodia. god bless.
If Cambodia enforced the law strictly both Svay Sitha and his wife should be found guilty of committing the crimes: Svay Sitha for sexual encountered with the minor while his wife for bodily injured people with the intent to maim. Since this is a crime, the state should take action by taking those two who commit crime to court. If found guilty, they have to serve jail time. The court, cannot just let whoever commit crime to go free just because the victim family is compensated.
2:37am, totally greed with your remarks! in cambodia, people need to understand that any compensation cannot make up for the permanent damages done to the victim! khmer people like this acid victim should adamantly demand justice and law be served! otherwise, it it still a lawless society, to say the least. keep demanding for reform in this type of mentality or thinking. that aren't right! no amount of money in the world can make up for the loss of dignity, life, etc...! god bless cambodia.
ps: the purpose of the law should serve and punish those who did wrong or did injustice to otherwise good, innocent victim(s). otherwise, things like this is prone to repeat itself. everyone should try to stop it from reoccurring to others. remember two wrongs don't make it right philosophy! it's the right thing to do, really! wake up, please!
Acid attack is a crime but somehow it is the only effective way to teach people a lesson ,so:
1- Don't fool around with married men knowing that they all married.
2- Don't taunt the wives , while you have an affair with theirs using sarcastic words such as," I take your husband , and you can't do a shit to me ".
3- I'll take everything from you.
Well, with that attitude ,you have to expect a full retaliation. And the most effective weapon is Acid.
You destroy my family ,i destroy your face.So fuck it off.
2:37AM,
Cambodia, being under the control of the strongman, the iron-fisted dictator, has enforced its laws very strickly. Its laws, I think, might be different from your interpretation about what law is. Cambodia law appears to be very effective force at punishing the innocent then allowing the criminals go free, unpunished.
well, let's demand reform and call on gov't o change their outdated view! it's called being proactive and making a difference for all to enjoy life in cambodia, ok! god bless.
make sure to bring it up in a debate for the next coming national election, ok! for once, let's all be useful and help to make a real difference in cambodia this time around! in the meantime, get used to it!
If the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge government doesn't prosecute criminals (Hun Sen, Chea Sim, Heng Samrin, Hor Nam Hong, Hok Lundy, Bun Rany, Svay Sitha, Khuon Sophal and Khuon Vandy), who are the peoples that the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge government put in jail?
The peoples that the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge government put in jail must be innocent Khmer peoples.
If you voted and/or supported the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime, you are the most dumbest and stupidest mother fucker in Cambodia.

Do you guys have any comments?
we see your point, however, please don't use politics here to your advantage. save that for election time only because not everybody is interested in politics, here. thank you.
Hey, New Phally, ah Kun,
what do you mean by "peoples"? Do you mean to count Cambodians and Vietnamese?
Hun Sen thinks he is the victim too...
Hun Sen is the victim of being a dictator, and of being too rich.
According to the trailer, Tat Marina says that she is force to be with the man, so how can she escape when he threaten her that her family will be hurt? The powerful in Cambodia will always have power to take over the weak. Changes can only be done when the insider change.
To 3:09 AM,
You talked about common sense. Yes, it's true girl should not mess around with the married man. However, Tat Marina was just 15 at the time of the incident whereas Svay Sitha was 40 or 50 (not sure of his age at that time). Being 15 she was still minor in the eyes of the law and as such she has no mental capacity of her own. Thus, even if she consented to have sex with Svay Sitha, the court will not accept that as and excuse and let Svay Sitha go free. The law is enacted to protect the minor from being exploited by an adult.
Hey krama man what are you doing here ?I thought you get shot by your boss Hun Sen ready, you are complaining like a little baby need some candies ,why you need more younger mistress .Stop complaining pervert as long as you are whining I think you need more corrupt monies to satisfy your young mistress .
Get out and go to work?
to AngkorianMan Krama Man what if i go and fuck your daugher, who is 15 to 16 year old just for fund like you do to those girld and my age is way way older than your daughte what do you think? do you still happy to go round and fuck other young girlf. bold head and no morality as human all you cpp are animal.
Svay Sitha's wife, khuon sophal, who wass responsible for the attack, has been living in australia, cabramatta for years. she even opened a grocery shop-called banteay srey, she sold the shop other other people.
how could she get into austealia i don't know.
Ah Svay Sitha and his wife are guilty of committing the crimes on Tat Marina. Hun Sen should put them in jail, in order save face of your CPP government to the world Crimes Against Humanity
records.
9:20 AM,
Why Svay Sitha's wife was allowed to stay in Australia? Considering the acid attack incident which is a high profile case in Cambodia, I find it hard to believe that Australia would accept her. Could this be that both Husband and wife were resettled in Australia in 1980's and, eventually went back to Cambodia, bride his way to get the top Cambodian government job under Hun Sen?
Can anyone post Svay Sitha's wife photos on the internet?
How could so many criminalists in Cambodia still have the right to work as part of the Government in Cambodia?
1041 am, no she tried to escape from cambodiaafter the attack. she bribed her way through some dodgy migrationagents, i think. when she got here, no one knew, she hid her idenity well. she bought a groceer shop mainly satisfy migration rules, i think. then she sold the shop to someone else and disappeared, but still in sydney. i can find out more. i was shocked when i heard do this. aust authority should investigate this. it is outrageous. many khmer people came to australia and other countries in the last 10 years or so, and many are cunning and dishonest. they would do anything to get to a western country.

12:24 PM, yes, I share your concerns too. In Texas, U.S. I met one Khmer guy accidently in the party ,and during our conversation he revealed that he once served as courier in Khmer Rouge reign from 1975 to 1978. He even admitted that he killed as many as 40 people during those 3 years timeframe. I find it hard to believe that American Immigration would let the Khmer Rouge sneak through their net very easily.
11:26 AM,
Those people in Cambodian government are criminals, either before the fact or after the fact. They bride the way to get the jobs and they, in turn, accepting bride to enrich themselves once they hold the job. I am ashamed to hear that some Khmer people from overseas who came to educate themselves in the west and returned to Cambodia but, instead of helping rebuilt the country they chose to ruin the country through corruption. Maybe Khmer nation is over now.
this message is for svay sitha's wife. if your husband want to have sex with another woman, let him. you don't need to hurt his lover and ruin her life like that. you should find younger man to screw you while your husband is screwing someone else. or you should divorce him and find you a man who can be honest and make you happy. since you poured acid on that girl, had your husband stop cheating on you?
She got a big boob that's why Svy Shita is LMOP Choy!
