Kong Pharith, a former math and physics teacher from Kampong Chhnang province, uses his knowledge to successfully come up with a solar-energy-powered car.
The sound that was heard earlier was a trial attempt to move a car powered by solar energy and it was a first time that such a car is found in Cambodia. The car is the work of a former math and physics teacher from Kampong Chhnang province. Kong Pharith is this native teacher of Kampong Chhnang.
For the idea to come up with such a car, Kong Pharith, who is currently the chairman of the Able Builder Organization and also chairman of the Phnom Penh-based Intelligent Planning Center, indicated that, prior to coming up with this vehicle, he spent about 6 months researching for the right formula. His solar-energy car attempt comes at the heel of his invention of the solar-energy powered bicycle which he was also successful last year.
He added that for the solar-energy powered car, he used second-hand parts and assembled them together before adding solar energy cell battery and motor.
Kong Pharith said: “for the engine to run fast or slow, if we don’t know how to control it, when the motor is running slow, it is weak because there is not enough electrical power. When it is weak, it cannot pull the car forward, but after researching, we use the PMW [technology]. For the PMW … we use a wave to control the engine to speed up while maintaining the engine power. There were several trials made during the research phase.”
Kong Pharith indicated also that his car can carry 2 to 4 passengers at a speed of 30 to 40 km/h. The car itself weights 750 kilos, and the solar cell can produce between 2,000 to 2,430-watt of power daily. The car can be driven between 30 to 40 km per day.
He also indicated that if there is no sunlight, or if the driver wants to drive farther, the car battery can be charged by electricity because his car is equipped with a dual battery system.
Kong Pharith said: “Therefore, this car uses a dual hybrid system. We are not relying on solar energy alone, we also have a electrical input to charge the battery, and we can still use it. In the future, we will also add a small [fuel?] engine in there as well. When we want to drive far, we can rely on the additional small [fuel] engine to help the solar power energy move the car forward. Every part is available in Cambodia, so that in the future, if the car breaks down, all parts can be bought from the market for replacement.”
Kong Pharith indicated also that for his first attempt to come up with the solar-energy powered car, he spent more than $3,000. He believes that his expense is too high because the parts are expensive, especially the solar cell panel installed on the roof of the car. The cost for a 130-watt solar panel is close to $700 and a small 20-watt solar panel costs about $100.
He added: “Some of the parts that we need to buy are transistors which are essentially small semi-conductors. We use them to control the speed of the motor. At first, some of them burnt up and were damaged. We tried other types unsuccessfully, so we have to make several changes, but at the end, we were successful, we found a way to use them with success.”
Regarding this solar-energy car, Nget Vibol, director of the patent office of the ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, said that he knew about this story, and he had also encouraged the inventors.
Nget Vibol added that he knew about the car, but he had not met the inventors yet and they had not come forward to apply for a patent yet.
Nget Vibol said: “He let us know about this car already, but he must apply for a private patent, so we leave this up to the inventors to decide, we are not forcing them, except to say that some of the technologies used requires other expertise.”
Kong Pharith said that he did not apply for a patent yet because he has just completed his research and his car.
He said that he will apply for a patent when he can bring his car to the ministry of Public Works for an inspection in the future.
Besides this solar-energy powered car, Kong Pharith also came up with a solar-energy powered bicycle, but because of lack of funding and not many people know or pay attention on his invention. Up to now, he assembled together 4 solar-energy powered bicycles. He indicated also that he recently received some orders for solar-energy bicycles from overseas, including from France.
“I don’t dare produce too many of these bicycles because each one of them costs between $300 to $400. We try to lower the cost, but we were not able to. Lowering the cost means lower quality. Steel bicycles are too heavy, therefore we must decrease their weight. For the solar powered car, I want to decrease the weight also, because the lighter they are, the better they are,” Kogn Pharith said.
He indicated also that, besides coming up with his ideas, he also tries to teach others [on the technology]. He usually charges $200 for the 2-month training, however, for poor students from the provinces, he teaches them free of charge. He currently has 10 students learning under him.

It looks like a very nice car.
I would really love to ride in one of them.
me too, i like to see in real person.
It shoud say a former khmer or Cambodian teacher. Let gave the khmer people some credit cuz we'd been lost so long ago.
Peace to al khmer people around the the globe.
I think this is just the begining, more style and convenience will be coming up...
Get going Khmer people...
Our Khmer inventor is not the first. It's been done in other develop countries already. But it is a great feeling to see Khmer Scientist made a great effort to do this. Hopefully more are interested or hungry for science than hungry for power and land grabbing.
This one will be The Preah Vihear Car, as we had Angkor Car already...
Love Khmer...
I think the vehicle should be aerodynamic design to get less dragging and use less energy and therefore can travel long distance.
I am so proud if our Cambodian people can produce our own product with good quality.
From http://rapidsharelink4download.blogspot.com
It is an environmental and economical design and the result is very encouraging.I am very proud of the fact that we as cambodian become open minded and searching for alternative.
Well done.

Hey, guy how about solar for our kaun Khmer in the country. They have no electricity at all. Then we wouldn't be worry about government anymore soon.
He should file or apply for a patent worth millions of dollars for himelf and Cambodia when this solar energy powered car will be used around the world especially in the western USA and the Mediterranian areas of the globe where the sun shines most of the time. He can use a battery to store solar energy for night driving. Hope his invention is unique and patentable.
USA Engineer
Kong Pharith was born to be smart. He is a productive
person in Cambodia and the world. He reaches to the star. keep up the good work. Congratulations!!!
USA Teacher
Wonderful news!!! Cambodian people can come up with something unique and modern!!!Yes!!!!! The next step is to get it to really work and transport people in the most comfortable way. Can you do that Professor? Get your patent and apply to the US or Europe for more grant. You can do it. Good luck & God bless!
PS
Bill Gates, what do you think? Can you help him?
I am very impressed to Kong Parith built the first solar energy vehicle in the Kingdom of Cambodia. You are very brilliant man. May God bless you and Cambodian people.
AngkorianMan Krama Man
those brats will use it as their toys to run over innocent khmer people.
Pi Anh : PPU
PPU,
While Khmers applaud what their own people have achieved even it's just a little, then you belittle them. What does it tell you or anyone about you?
1- PPU is envious of Pharith's success.
2- PPU is afraid of Pharith'd become a well known inventor ever in a poor nation, Cambodia.
3-PPU is an arrogant, irrational hypocrite Vietnamese who has carried Khmer ID like Phu Kok An and many more Vietnamese who are in Cambodia.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Say goodbye to your love ones ah tituy ppu, a hurricane is coming your way.
I applaud Kong Tharith for his effort. But I don't fall into his bogus claim of making the car to run 20-30 km per day on a less than 2500 Watts energy generator.
2500 watts is equal to the power used daily by 4 little pumps in my pond or one small air conditioner. It's also equal to the power used by 4 small light bulbs (60W each) and two irons. If he can just make his car run for 1 km at any speed on a 2500Watts power, he would be famous already. I always wish we had real Cambodian inventors, but what we got is an wannabe-scientist amateur who is making bogus claim to get fame and attention. Real scientists need real trainings and fact-based research, not trial-and-error in the dark.
Correction: 40 light bulbs, not 4 light bulbs.
12:43am.
The world have self taught scientists. We don't expect the people in the poverty nation to learn in schools.
No need the scientists, the elite students to be inventors. Everyone including children can be an inventor if she or he can invent what novelty useful and non-obvious means.
If Kong Pharith can start from a scratch, he or she can look for more. Everyone is encouraged to invent something, rather bashing each other.
It does not hurt to become inventors, although this kind of automobile has already existed in the US and Japan invented by Engineering students.
Ps: Don't degrade Kong Pharith and said he or she is a wanne-be-scientist. His background in Math and Physics, he is a scientist, although in a small poor Kingdom.
Med. Stu.
it's good that he invented this, however, i wouldn't want to drive around town with that bulky solar panel on my car. it's like driving around with a satelite dish on top of your car. maybe they can improvise it to make it smaller or more convenient in some way. other than that, it's great invention, really.
It is great!!! But it is regrettable that Cambodia does not have budget for him for more Research and Development (R & D).
Khmer Government should help him...
GO koun khmer GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Congratulation!
If I am the king I will give this guy a big National reward build up the the department for his Garage to do more research from all the taxes money resources and the special tours to Europe and USA with the government money for one month.
I hope Cambodian government not so conserve on their budget for a golden bones khmer like this one.
What do you expect from a cambodian scientist 12:43am ? The guy invented this car based on his ability. You can't expect him to be someone who has all the right data specifications. He uses the rule of thumb rather than trial and error, and more often than not it is the quick way to make something come to life.
One of the best positive news! finally! someone came up with a great invention! I like the idea of driving a solar energy car, except when it is cloudy, sunset or night time then what will happen to the driver? driver will be stuck! Does it convert to battery or electric energy? I believe all experiment goes through trial and errors first before it would work. Dreams can come true, his inspiration will open doors to endless posibility and inventions of great ideas. His invention will be an uprising phenomenal success for the cambodian country. Go cambodia! go khmer guy! keep researching and inventing new ideas.
Way to go Prof. Kong Pharith wih your out-of-the box thinking and creativity. You got the basis down and to now work on improvements and further refinement. This proves that Khmer is not short of ingenuity.
In the films of Rithy Pan,the children of Angkor,an old man had asked the Abbot :
"We're khmer who had built Angkorwat why now we cannot even build a bicycle ?"
The Abbbot replied :
" ...Cuz we had Preah Visnoukar stayed & lived with us in the past...and now he lives & works with the powerful countries like US,FRance,Russia,Japan ect..."
Preah Pisnoukar decides to come back to live & work with Khmer-People.He makes Khmer people to be smart & bright and also I guess he will create the Free & Smar Leaders to lead Cambodia toward the prosperity and the happy country. And of course Yuon Hanoi has to go home !!!!Where are Hun Sen & his CPP going ??
Take a closer look, a very good closer look at that transporation vehicle carefully, people. It is unsafe and its users WILL end up in fatalistic accident for sure. In addition, this car is just a composition of other manufactured pieces put together. Overall, this invention looks like a piece of junk. I need a better synthesis and a better product. Come on "Cambodians", you need to do better.
6:31 am, shooooo......fly off you dirty fly. Go perch on a cow dung or something.
Guess what?.This car is perfect for street vendor. The solar panel can produce electricity to run the blenders or run the sugar cane squeezer for juice.
There you go. now this is a constructive suggestion and comment.
Piece of Craps!
Hun Sen and Sihanouk don't give a shit about khmer educators!
8:12AM & 8:26am,
Thanks for your honest opinion.Rich Khmer did have a taste for luxury. If they could ,they would go for LEXUS,MERCEDES,BMW, CADILLAC ESCALADE etc.....
To me, it looks like a Hammer, a small one anyway.
Gentleman
There are still more to it, but this is the initiative. that what we congratulate it for.Being independent, changing in our mentality and searching for knowledges that what it counts.
In 1962, I noticed that many of japanese products were unreliable, and how far Japan has progressed in term of technogogy?.
So please stop being stupid, and praise for the good deeds.
It is much better than being a crook depleating cambodian wealth and resources.
Go for it cambodian! more researches for knowledge, apply it and polish your products to serve human needs.
Only those dumps who live with restrict mentality of the past.

You have no brain to build this car. This is only a trial. Shut up ,you pussy cat.
Anonymous at 10:29AM: You are absolutely right man! Iti is what I really to tell to everybody.
Well, well let's not be a hypocrite here. Just finished chastising someone of being too opinionated then turned around using profanity and asked people to be civilized. A civilized person doesn't use profanity to get a point across.
Hun Sen will enjoys ride this piece of crap to visit Uncle Ho grave site...
It is very compelling that Khmer people could invent that kind of car. I am very proud of you professor. Cambodia are growing gradully from day to day. We should be united so that vietnamese guy like A KOM ROUK PPU looking down on us and one day you would know the adverse effect that you have made even you have the inside track...

Congratulation Lok Kong Pharith! We are proud of you. Go for it Cambodia!
What he has, is the idea. He deosn't have the money or the right kind of material to produce a luxurious car. Not, yet. Most of all, it takes a team of designers to come up with the shape and form of a car itself. We see that most expensive cars have leather interiors etc...and fine stuff of everything else. That's why it costs ten of thousands of dollars.
This perhaps will stop the traffic for most of car producers around the globe. Just remember, you saw here first in Cambodia.
Didn't the chineese invent fire cracker? or firework? but who actually had turned it into gun or cannon or bumb? or somebody in South America grew cocoa leaves just to get little fun effect or just for cooking around the kitchen? Do you know what they say? Oh my God! I can do this! I can do that! Now it's voila Cocaine or cracks!!!!! People are very smart and can really pull some things out there. So to actually invent a really solar car, Professor has yet to meet that right person or people as his team or give him $ 95 millions, you'll see.
Khmer very good in copying...still no progress ever!

I don’t see anything wrong with wannabe something. I am wannabe something too, and that’s alright. I don’t know how you define “scientist,” but for me and many others, scientists must have done some reproducible works or experiments recognized by research peers and expertise. Kong Tharith is a science teacher, plain and simple.
All he said have not been proved. Based on simple reasoning, some of his claims did not seem to be true and exaggerated to gain attention.
I don’t want to jump on the bandwagon to please my countrymen or for the sound of patriotism. I also don’t discourage people from doing inventive works. But I want the truth, not bogus claim. This kind of tinkering is not going to achieve a break-through discovery. It might lead to some small applications in poor countries like Cambodia. I’m sure it’ll help reduce fossil fuel consumption by using solar energy. It can be done using solar energy with fossil fuel or electricity. And this is not new stuff, just expensive right now. If he can make it cheap, then it’s something worth looked at. But we have to pay great attention to its durability and quality consistency.
I’m not trying to degrade Mr Kong Tharith. I just wanted to point out some unrealistic claim. If you liked to use batteries that are on the verge of losing power, then you would not mind using this car.
Vietnam must be under china.

1:50 pm, have read your rebuttal to med student's comment and re-read the article itself. one can detect envy here. his comment may have some poor choice of a word but his aim is to encourage what the professor is striding to do. and so are most of everybody's comment here, encouragement. not painting a bogus picture or a kiss up for the sake of patriotism. as a matter of fact, big and important discoveries start with small tinkering like this. Also the fact that the prof. has already indicated some short comings of his creation proves that it still requires much more improvements or even modifications. So think ahead, look far, may be you can cast a longer shadow some day. I hope you can because you are a student now, right?
The car is crap, it's the concepts behind it that count!
You guys are bunch of idiots!
8:36PM, I think we just have a different perspective on things like this because it involves a Cambodian achieving great goal. Normally I would be hecka excited around the hoopla around it too. But as someone quite familiar with solar panels, I just don't think it'll work by itself. The only way for the car function well is a hybrid system, which is way more developed in auto industries. Mr Tharith is doing something someone started many many years ago.
If you want to make new things, you don't want to start the works people have already done and developed, you want to start from the latest models.
I have done research and read numerous publications. Even real scientists want to make bogus claims too. When I evaluate an information, I try to stay objective by reading those numbers and reasoning.
I'm not discouraging people from doing this kind of thing. But they have to put real numbers, data to let people see. And most importantly, the data has to be verified and approved by an independent assessor.
We, as a nation, don't want to get embarassed by gloryfying something no one else interested in. However, this kind of spirit of Mr Tharith is in a good direction. It encourages Cambodian youths to learn sciences.
Cambodia is too poor for jumpstarting any research because of its high costs and no guarantee for fruitful results. There sadly are plethora of other things Cambodia needs money for, it's very hard to envision any kind of real research in Cambodia without the help of foreign institution or government.
P.S. I was proud to learn about the Angkor car, something really works and it's not too expensive although it does not satisfy the ideal auto standards and confort.
I know it is an Khmer invention of electric car to help reduce the pollution in our ever increasing polluted environment. But I think Cambodian government could do a lot more help if they have some rules for some items to be disposed. For example Mucury in refrigerators, batteries, computers, motor oil, trash etc... I think there ought to be some kind of rules to dispose these.
I am proud to see Cambodia begin to to think of inventions... It is a good sign that some of us are moving beyond guns and power...
Great achivement. For safety reason, between driver and passengers, beneath the solar panels (they are so fragile) in case they crack and fall on their heads during colision.
PPU=People party union=information collector as claimed=Yuon spy
i hope the world can use his idea for building solar energy car in the future. god bless him for doing it!
i know, builder or inventor of a solar car should keep in mind this in sue era that consumer's safety and protect is a priority when it comes to the market economy like the one cambodia is now experiencing and adapting for sure. other than that, he did great considering he did it himself and from scratch. maybe one day with big financial support, he can improve this invention and find a market for it, then he'll become very rich from having invented it. that's how they all do it in the west! he can become rich if he is successful with his invention. good luck!
maybe it is ok for use locally inside cambodia like in rural areas or country roads. hey, it's better than oxcart and use only solar energy for power. i think that's really great for him to come up with that design and more. god bless him
Khmerstudent, building the contraption and putting it through trial to see if it moves or not isn't a form of research, certainly don't know what is. You said that you have done research and read publications. May be you haven't gotten to the meaningful step and right publication yet. A simple google search would suffice with good information. A suggestion for you, follow this link and read the article http://www.solarelectricalsystems.com/solarvehicles.shtml. Based on my rough calculation, the Prof.'s numbers are in the same ball park as of the article's numbers. So it is a safe bet that the Prof. hasn't been bs'ing except that he needs work on shedding a good chunk of vehicle weight and the aerodynamic aspect as someone mentioned earlier. For heaven sake, Cambodia just found peace about ten years ago and Cambodian people crawled out of the hell hole not long before that and now this provincial Prof. is inspired by this advanced science that is usually found in developed universities and countries. That is nothing, repeat nothing to be ashame of. Just one thing, don't use the word "invent" as seen in some comments here. It is misleading for readers. By the way crunching engineering numbers is not new to me.

This is nothing new. Give me money, I'll make one for you.
Technically, I would not say this is any invention.
This technology has been in place for more than 30 years. Solar energy powered vehicles have been on the road for more than 30 years too though not that popular.
For a product to be an invention, it has to be made without any precedent, not just to combine solar panels made in China, and motor made in Japan, and the body stell made in Vienam and assemble them or modify other parts and call it an invention.
Please open your dictionary of paten law before call it an invention. It really makes me laugh with this news and its reporter.
The dude learned something from all this. That's what matter the most.
PPU's pencil dick needed solar energy powered help...
Our Vietnamese Friend PPU has carried his fake Khmer ID isn't happy to see any Khmer can do something.
Yes solar cell is conventional, but many engineering students who are doing for their senior projects have improved their cars by adding more useful things. So they do because they are rich in the rich countries.
Kong Pharith invented his solar powered car to fit his poor country, and so he does because he is poor in a poor country, whereas his people many are stupid.
This is a piece of Pharith's novelty that is different from the rich students' cars in the rich countries.
Ps: To Khmer student 2:43 AM
What you said in your post were not your own words, you must heave heard and copied from other critics like our Vietnamese friends PPU and his death squads in Cambodia who are jealous with Pharith. I told you many self taught scientists who live in a very poor nations.

I won't belittle or liftup Kong Pharith who built this yellow solar powered car until I read and understand what is in an Abstract or in his full description of his car including figures or diagrams.
Most inventors build simples, like small toys and they tested them to make sure their inventions work.
But if this yellow solar powered car is his (Kong Pharith) simple, still I want to read his novelty or new process in the abstract or his own description of his intellectual property if he does have.
The background of Solar car, I means the old invention should be described, then new inventors if Kon Pharith is, he has to describe what is his improvement. If he has this improvement which differs from the old solar car (old invention), then Kong Pharith is qualified to be a real Inventor.
At this moment I don't see him is a real inventor, until I read his full description.
Folks. Don't get upset with me. This is not a criticism, rather aquaintance with facts, so that you all understand what is an INVENTOR.

I forget to say, King Phraith is doing a great job.
He is learning by doing things, and he soon will be one of the successful inventor.
I was just reading Joseph Schumpeter, then I came to see how brilliant and how progress Kong Pharith may become.
Khmer students are encouraged to find new or creative ideas that could turn to money, and don't rely on only cars, but other usefull means.
Congratulation Pharith!!!

Why some critics are so negative about Kong Pharith?
Why cannot these negative critics think his car can provide better transportation than the ancient vehicle of their ox-cart on routes?
It is exactly right, learning by doing it, is a key to success.
I hate these SEA people especially Cambodians, the stupidest and dumbest on earth.
No body can improve anything while million blockeahs would try to discourage others who try to learn.

PPU (Peeping People Union)
Nop CPP represents: Communist puppet people; and PPU Puppet people Union.

10:16 pm, being critical of some of the critic and questioning their trains of thought are fine and dandy. but then you started to label Cambodians at the wholesale level is really not called for. This shows that you are so freaking moronic to realize that 99% of the participants and the person at the center stage except you in this blog are Khmer or Cambodian to a hollow head like you always call. Under which cow dung did you crawl out off? Come and march in here like a damn Nazi or a pathetic wannabe. Now go walk your stupid mutt because you are not a bit useful here. Learn your lesson of not to generalize. You're a piece of garbage....
Dear All lovely bothers systers,
Just, to night I saw all coments.
Thank very much for both comments. I am very happy from criticising comment and supported commend. I learned a lot from these feedback.
I am Kong Pharith had born in this Cambodia. My home was Bomed by US B 52 during the year 1972. Since that time I never had a chance to study till 1984. I had official attended primary school grade 4 when I was 24 years old and I became a Mathataic and Physic tecaher in 1991. Even the war has torn Cambodia, I had study from Dad, my uncle and friends that I can reading writing both Cambodian, Thai and English.
In the forest or in the rice fiels we can learne if we real want. To what are font of us.
I alway take oppunity to learn and to think every opportunity, car repair, engine repair, electoric, making cloth, cooking and solar energy with expert from swiden.
To be clearer, I had attended private electronic class 1988-1990 to ask all my practice experience and learn from my uncle since 1984.
The good news is I had studies positivie thinking, medidtion, OPERACY thinking class, Self management and leadership and reading many books about thinking and innovation. Learn alot from internets, I fullfill my heart with peace, love and joy. I work and play with job I love. I feel more calmfull nad happy. Blaming is not in me, but LOVE and Peace in in my heart.
I start to learn that Mr. Hennry ford study at grate 7. He can make cars, Mr. Tomas Edision study very little can invent 2000 products before he died. Kid like Pascal young boy invented caculator, Young man invented Helecopter, Why I can not do any thing? I believe that I can use my brain to create something, my brain is not keep it only record history that created by other.
I have to turn my face to the source of light to win my shadow. Stop run in a cycle as normal like before, start thinking, change habit to be perment success habit.
I write a book call The Science of Personal Success. I taugh about The Scicence of Personal Success on ABC radio, FM 99.5 Radio and TV5
Thinking that Create success and history. Solar car is not importaint, Thinking more is importaint than knowledge and ability to remembers.
I though and I did reasearch since 2005 to invent first solar car in Cambodia. I know that this invention is not perfect. But I belive that I can make it better and better if I have enought fund to make it. I can buy brushless electric motor for hybrid car from China and to pay more money to man who produce cars body design as I want and car body auto collor painting etc.
I think I have to start now, I am not wait for perect time and enought money, it never come. This invention is the process of my learning and improving and experement. Now this solar car is up grade to 3 ways of power, tribrid : Solar power , electric charger and small gasoline engine. It can go as long as you want night or day time.
I have many other invention ideas, please join with me to learn more.
