The Historical Society of Long Beach has received a $40,000 grant to help catalogue the history of the Cambodian community in Long Beach.

Long Beach’s Cambodian community is believed to be the largest outside of Southeast Asia.

The grant, from the Long Beach Community Foundation, will help create an archive of historical photographs and documents

The project, known as the Cambodian Community History and Archive Project (CamCHAP) will be a joint effort of the historical society and California State University, Dominguez Hills.

CSU Dominguez Hills professor Dr. Susan Needham said in a release, “We can be proud that Long Beach has the first ‘Cambodia Town’ in the world. We hope having our collection of historical and ethnographic materials available at HSLB and on the Internet will create interest in how immigrants contribute to cities like Long Beach.”

More than 2,000 photographs and approximately 1,400 English and Khmer newspapers and documents have been collected. The historical society will catalogue and digitize these items. The collection will be housed at the historical society’s home, 4260 Atlantic Ave.

A second aspect of the collection will be an interactive Web site, which will tell the story of Cambodians in Long Beach through photographs, documents and audio and video clips.

Target date for the completion of the project and public introduction is January 2011.

The Long Beach Community Foundation has as its mission, “to initiate positive change for Long Beach through charitable giving, stewardship and strategic grant-making.” Currently, the foundation administers more than 40 charitable funds.

America did not help Cambodia until now. Did you know they bomed in Cambodia and killed a lot of people back then? We broke relationship with Americ since 1965. I realy don't particular care and like America. America is not like what you thought all White, blon d and blue eye. America is just a name but the people can be bruthal like Khmer Rouge as well.
