Lao border police arrested five Cambodians in Siempang district, Stung Treng province, last week, after a group of eight was found hunting animals and looking for other forest goods.
Cambodian officials say the five were arrested 1 kilometer inside the Cambodian border.
Stung Treng Governor Loy Sophat said the villagers had been tricked by the soldiers into their arrest.
Sy Soun, governor the province’s Siempang district, said he had already dispatched soldiers from the region to negotiate the release of the villagers, who remain in custody.
The Lao soldiers were demanding $15,000 in compensation for the release of the villagers, he said.
Officials at the Lao Embassy could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Koy Koung said he had not received information on the arrests, but the Cambodian ambassador in Laos would seek to negotiate with Lao authorities.

Are you kidding? Don't you know the Prime Minister of Laos is Vietnamese? The Vietnamese's new strategy is to have their Viet people to learn Laos and learn culture, then when the old Laos retire and die, the new ones come, and the new ones are new faces Laos but they are from Vietnam.

Lao, Thai or Viet Cong. What's is a diffierence. They just wait for that opportunity to ignite Khmer into war again. When we go to war nothing is gonna benefit us but another destruction. We need a new leader. Not Hunsenouk or Sehanouk Someone get really go with a flow and strengthen our military force and foreign policy. If everything you said was right,i think the vietnamese people are very smart,very intelligent than khmer.And in the meantime,khmers are the dumbest race of all.
The problem is that Lao people - NOT just LPDR government - still consider Stueng Teng as THEIR LAND cut out by French Colonial masters.
Lao people still call Stueng Teng by the old name as "Xiang Taeng" - even today.
BTW, Vietcong already control LPDR by using those Vietnam Descendants from Tha khaek and Savannakhet ... so there are no protest from Lao people.

In general, Laotians are good people. Let's not quick to call them names. Yes there are good and bad people everywhere, even us Cambodians have more than plenty of bad people. However, we should always protect ourselves and our people from being exploited by anyone... especially from the Viet and Thai governments; they are not to be trusted, period, as long as there are Cambodia and Cambodians.
