A Reader's open letter to the Khmer M'chas Srok Movement

Aug 22, 2009

Subject: Seminar By Khmer M’Chas Srok Movement in Long Beach

Dear Khmer M’Chas Srok Movement,

Your initiative is commendable and I hope a large number of Khmer population in the Long Beach region will make extra effort to actively participate or attend the seminar. As for the seminar itself, it is vital to focus on the real and important issues and to ultimately find workable solutions to those issues.

The seminar should not become an anti-CPP gathering or a CPP bashing session as it only serves to intensify the frustration and widen the gap among Khmer people. Obviously, anti-CPP does not necessarily equate to patriotism. Khmers abroad, either in Britain, France, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand …etc are well informed of the current issues in Cambodia, and they don’t want to come to a seminar to hear what they already knew. But what they would like to hear is how to fix those issues and/or how they can realistically help.

It is important that the seminar goes beyond the traditional witch hunting, and takes an objective approach to problem solving. Make a clear distinction between what is desirable and what is doable, while emphasizing on the inspiration and empowerment rather than pessimisms.

Last night, I was reading an academic paper entitled: “Serial Colonialism and Genocide In Nineteen-Century Cambodia” by Ben Kiernan. It is a very interesting paper and I would encourage every Khmer to read or study it. In that paper, Ben described how Khmer people suffered, struggled and survived during the invasions and annexations of Cambodia by the Vietnamese emperor Minh-Mang and Thai emperor Rama III during 1750-1850 period.

A good lesson to retain from that paper is that despite total isolation, repeated invasions and occupations by outnumbered Vietnamese and Thai armies, Khmer people during that times continued to persevere culturally and mentally, never gave up the fights, and were resilient enough to use Vietnamese occupation forces against the Thai army and vice versa on several occasions.

Today, Cambodia continues to face the threats and dominations from her neighbouring states. But she has a better chance to survive, thanks to the globalization, information technology and her current population that exceeds ten millions. Khmer population in Cambodia not only grows in number with times, but are also better educated and are more aware of national and international affaires, a key factor to the survival of our nation.

An increasing number of her population living abroad has returned to the native land with greater wisdom, competitive and advanced skill sets, and disposable incomes. Those Khmers who are living abroad contribute to strengthen Cambodia image on the world stage. Cambodia is now better known to the world because her population abroad has visibly become the fabric of many Western societies.

As our population are geographically dispersed through out different continents and countries, it is natural that we speak, think and behave differently. We must consider these differences as our treasure and collaborate with each other to turn these differences into our strength. That is exactly what the Jewish people are doing, and look how powerful they are in the world today.

It is utmost important for us to strengthen the bonding between our people – Khmer Krom, Khmer Kandal, Khmer Loeu and Khmer Overseas to safeguard our nation and identity. Unlike during the 1750-1850 era, Cambodia today does not have to struggle alone. We have potential allies – China, USA, EU and world opinion/media on our side. We must diligently and correctly align our foreign policy in order to survive and prosper. and together, YES, WE CAN!

Completely agreed with "anti-cpp doesn't equal to patriotism."

Anti-cpp just makes you part of the group opposite them.

Beware of the people that use patriotism in their their persuasion. Nationalism has always been an exploitative device universally, especially by politicians.

Donating money to any particular party doesn't make you a patriot, contrary to what you like to make yourself believe. Donating to a particular group just makes you part of that group and benefiting that certain group, not the country or the people as a whole.

If you donate to the CPP, you're just contributing to the CPP. If you're donating to the SRP, you're only benefiting the SRP.

Rethink your way of good intention to the motherland.

The best way to contribute is not to be part of any group. Take the initiative and make sure your money reaches the place and people you want it to reach. Don't give money to a group of people and trust they'll do good with that.

Keep contributing to the politicians if your intention is to be part of that group. If you want to contribute to the country, stop giving politician your money and gather your friends and start your own charity. That way your money will be more likely to be more beneficial to the people.

Thanks!

The moment you decide you're the one on the good side while others who possess different belief, life styles, etc... from you are bad, you set up yourself to be another failure of humanity.

Is different equal bad?

You need to learn to look past the myth of evil vs good. What is good for you isn't neccessarily good for others. That is why we have different people, different culture, and different beliefs. If you can't respect others' differences and subject those to be bad just because they are unlike yours, you're another mistake of mother nature.

Who are the CPP that you so opposed? Khmer.

You possess the ancient curse of Khmer people. Khmer killing Khmer.

How did the Khmer Rouge surrender and reintegrated back into the normal society and Cambodia in over three decades has one government and peace throughout the country? It was called the reconciliation. The policy was to look past any difference in order for Khmer to unite.

You look like the type that promotes my way or the high way. You could care less whether the person you're killing are Khmer or not as long as it serves your purpose and agenda right?

You know who else did that? The past Khmer kings and their families who tried to kill each other and swallow the throne for themselves. Consequently, Khmer Empire fell and shrunk to what it is today.

Your mentality of division between Khmer will not be tolerated anymore, buddy. We'll cast you to the minority of disease that plagued Khmer unity.

If you insist on dividing the Khmer family, go screw yourself and consider yourself Khmer no more, ah traitor.

Khmer people in and outside Cambodia need to learn to look past this whole political division. How the hell are we gonna survive if we can't even respect each other's belief difference? I thought you guys are educated. Educated people disagree but respect their fellow country men.

If you want to see Cambodia progress, you should know better to unite and not fight each other like a bunch of cats and dogs like our past ancestors. They made many mistakes by fighting each other. Do we not have enough history of that to not repeat it?

Anonymous said...

Fuck all the political tools that promote Khmer division.

One Khmer Unity.

Division is political trick.

Unity is our salvation.

Stop hating each other just because you have different political view. It's called a family for a reason. You're part of the family, ain't you?

I remember when Thai first come into Preah Vihear, all Khmer come together. Why can't we just be a one family that understand each other and come to together like that 24/7? Huh? Do we need foreign threat in order to not fight each other?

I'm sick of you guys barking and fighting each other like animals. Stop hating your own people.

So what if you're a CPP, SRP, HRP, etc... those are just parties. We're Khmer. We're above all that. Think of yourself as Khmer and other as the same. Not just CPP, SRP, RHP. Look at the greater picture.

Anonymous said...

we oppose what CPP done to us and what ah Xen is doing to Cambodian!

Can you remember and see what happening to Cambodia now?

You mothefucker comminist we need to oppose or we will destroy by the fucking evil communist and the corrupters!

I prefere to be alone then to joint with the fucking Vietnamese! Even the world have only the fucking Viet left!!!!!!!

Accusing the "other" Khmer as Viet or Thai minions has been an ancient trick Khmer used on each other.

We went from Moha Nokor to what Cambodia is today because of that centuries old trick and yet we still have the same mentality.

Keep it up. Cambodia will be gone because you choose to fight each other. The enemy is yourself, not the Viet or Thai or Americans, French, Chinese etc...

Why do they need to do anything but just sit and watch as Khmer kill each other.

Wake the fuck up, Khmer euh? Do you want Khmer vanish?

Stay above political division!
Stay one Khmer!

I'm the type that promotes one Khmer unity and I'm the type that gets killed by the sectional Khmer just because I choose unity over division. I'm killed because I choose not to be part of them. I'm killed because I want to see one Khmer. So kill me if you love your division so much more than unity.

Khmer Academy has good vision.
Khmer Mchas Srok bears a very good name. I like that. Srok Khmer doesn't belong to one group of people but to us all. But it depends on who has the capability to manage a policy to get the votes and then get the police forces, armed forces, national assembly and justice system under his own control. From that standpoint there is not much we can do...Well, may be for a while 2008, 2012, 2018 and after that? I know we as people who also are "Mchas Srok" have to find a better way, but HOW? Addition and multiplication is very very hard for Khmer than division and substraction. Khmer have to change themselves comletely from inside. It's a very big mental revolution. Like king Jayawarman the 7th said: Win over your ennemy one thousand times doen't equal to win yourself for one time. Our nation is sliding toward a very dangerous zone. Most people in power if not all only think of their own personal interest. People outside of the country can say anythinng they want to say, but to put it in practice, I guest not many of them can leave their families behind to get involved. And for some who already got involved, also have falled into the same baot.

You are still thinking at the level of political division dude. Accusation of corruption and such are what politicians do to each other. Unless you're a politician and your life depends on accusing the other, I suggest you see past that.

Ask yourself this. What does it mean to have unity?

To me unity means understanding and respecting other countrymen for whatever difference I may have from them.

The problem with Khmer people is the lack of understanding and respect. Once you have no understanding of each other, you have suspicion and thus false identification is the way to label the other. Just like any relationship, trust and understanding. There isn't much if any of that in Khmer society and social classes right now.

Let's hope the younger generation will not repeat the same mistake that our ancestors did that had caused our culture and people much.

The day that Khmer politicians from any party can go and have a beer and dinner with each other genuinely after a heated debate is the day we have respect and understanding of each other thus unity.

Look at the democrats and republicans in the US. They can disagree with each other all they want but at the end of the day, they are all American and they understand that.

Now why can't all the Khmer grasp that simple conception as well? At the end of the day, you're not just CPP, SRP, HRP, or whatever. You're a Khmer. You're all Khmer above all that political affiliation, ain't you?

Our pledge allegiance is
Nation, Religion, and King

You see that?
The nation is first. Your blood as Khmer is the first and foremost thing. Start to realize that.

Don't be a CPP, or SRP, or HRP before being Khmer.

Hun Sen government is good only for his families and his cronies; it's good not for Khmer people in general. We should clearly distinguish between good and evil. Those who have harmed the innocent Khmer are absolutely evils. These evils posses no compassion, sympathy, and kindness towards the weak and poor Khmer. What these evils have are cruelty, arrogance, cockiness, uncotrolable pride, and spite. These evils think they are the strong forever. They forget to look at the consequences of the KR's actions which yields the bad result afterward. And those who admire and advocate this dictator and his cronies are just as evil as
these evils are, no different. It's better to be decent than be educated with little decency.

I agree with the what reader's meaning in the letter. For doing seminar, meeting discussing about our country's issue, we should talk esp. how to develop our country. Do not just try to against anyone. Hope that seminar find out good result and any actions that can make our country develop.

What I wish now is this :
If Khmer Mchas Srok have a formula for Khmer unification?
I agree, solving Khmer problem is not poiting finger at who is bad(who is good?), but to recognize the value of each Khmer, for what they have done, and from there, what to do next is up to if the people involved agree for a change? Do anyone can tell that Hun Sen will change for he already claimed that he have got 90 seats in the assembly because he done thing right?
I know that Hun Sen is very smart. We all know that in a sport game, says it soccer, for whatever you do, for how dirty it is, if the referee don't blow the whistle, you are OK.
Hun sen got referee scareed of him to death(!) how do you expect to hear the whistle blown?
Khmer Mchas Srok can say thing even more rough than SRP, but who care? KOK KOK ! SEK MOAT TRADOK CH-ET POAH KRABEI!
But go Khmer Mchas Srok, show what you have and swear that once you get the power, you guys won't be as corrupted as HS clan.
Good luck!

Anonymous said...

With Hun Sen being securely protected in power, no one should dream about solving any problem concerning the unification of the nation. One should learn to read the evil's mentality by listening to his arrogant speeches. an evil like Hun Sen will never yield to no one if he does not see a rough coffin placed beside him.

agree with the letter remarks. the meeting should be about finding a sound solution, not a bigotry or bias view on cambodia. otherwise, it serves no purpose but the prolong of civil disobedience, etc... yes, khmer all over the world are smarter now and are aware of what's going on in cambodia without a certain political group repeating it. i think finding solution is better than ruminate what everyone is already aware going on. if people lose interest they may not attend. let's make it interesting. there is more to cambodia than you and i. god bless.

agree as well that anti-cpp doesn't equal patriotism more than khmer people in cambodia. i think if we are smart, they should try to find a sound solution to what we see is necessary in cambodia. bias, profanity, name-calling, bigotry, cynical, skeptical, pessimistic, narrow-view, closed-minded, etc, etc, won't help cambodia nor will that help any of us. please think about it. the bottom line is we want the best for cambodia, our beloved mother land. this shouldn't be a revolution nor a call to disturb peace and prosperity in cambodia. remember, cambodia has come a long way since the end of the stupid KR era. of course, cambodia will always strive to become better in terms of governance, development, etc... cambodia and khmer people need our expertise, our help and so forth. cambodia already has a lot of problems, i don't think it is wise to create more problem for cambodia. please be civilized about it. yes, do keep an open mind and do learn from everybody in the world. it's called being smarter, really. thank you.

Hanoi did use Sun T'zu's principles to incorporated Cambodia, Lao into Viet Indochinese Federation since 1930.

Hanoi gave birth to the Khmer Rouge,

Hanoi trained and endoctrinated KR to murder khmer people, especially the educated, and kept only the ignorants led by Gangster leader, Hun Sen, a descendant from a khmer-Viet boder robbers families.

Hanoi is Vietnamising Cambodia which will cease as a Country, a Nation, a Race, but Viet SLAVES on their ancestors' lands.

Inside Cambodia Viet secrets roamed and controlled the whole country, and secretely or openly murdered khmer nationalists, prevented them to UNITING together for the survival of Cambodia.

All Khmers.

Go to read Sun T'zu'a Art of War, and sit down and analyse the Cambodia's situation of today, and try to find out what we ca do to help her out of Viet yoke.

Yea exactly how i feel sometimes. The Khmeroverseas become very arrogant sometimes acting like they are more Khmer than anyone else. I feel that is why there is animosity from the Khmer in srok.

I remember one time when my dad who is in the military had someone from USA want to meet him because he has a a decently high position in the military. My dad had to cancel meeting with this couple from overseas because he had an emergency and this couple just went crazy saying things arrogantly like "we're from the US, you got that?" My dad then told those people to leave our house.

That is just one example from first hand how the arrogance of some Khmeroverseas. You know who you are.

I have to disagree with you, sacrava. Just from reading your language and manner you use your words, it seems you have a very predetermined mindset before approaching any issue because all you know is Hun Sen = bad. When you have a pre-determined mentality, logic and rationale goes out the door no matter what doctorate degree you have. There goes all any credibility in your rhetoric. But I supposed your intention isn't to assess any issue credibly but just to trash talk about Hun Sen, which is fine if that is all you care about.

For other people who care about assessing real issues effectively, learn what it means not to have a pre-determined mindset.

Here is a question all you "real" Khmer can ask.

Why are the self-proclaimed Mchas Srok all abroad? Do you love Cambodia so much you have to remain somewhere else?

Please, don't give me all the bulls about how you get oppressed if you return. My uncle who was an engineer from Canada returned and joined a party different from CPP and he is doing fine.

So please answer why all you mchas srok all abroad?

yes, a lot of time, i think it is how we deal with each other more than political differences. it is important to learn people's skill like mutual respect, think before we talk, listening to both sides before jumping to a wrong conclusion, the way we approach others, and never forget the proper khmer customs and etiquette because we things are ways we deal with each other anyway. it goes both ways. i believe we are all intelligent people because we can read mind and read action and behavior, etc.; that's is what intelligence is. so if we perceive disrespect,or arrogant etc... usually we react negatively to that. remember the old saying treat others the way we would want others to treat us! well, that was indeed a wise philisophy to live by, really. it will take us a long way. also, communicate is very important. it is the narrow-mindedness and bias and arrogant, etc, that can cause people to react negatively. please think about it; it's mostly about dealing with each other properly and appropriate, at least to start with. otherwise, there will be a lot of misunderstanding that in turn leads to mininformation and so forth. thank you.

Because all these Khmer Mchas Srok are Mchas Srok only in talking. In reality, they don't give a shit about Cambodia. Don't trust me? If they care about Cambodia, why don't they do more than just talking?

Talk is cheap. Action is louder. So far it is very quiet when it comes to action.

all of you missed the point. You can preach about "khmer unity' all you want, but the fact of the matter is the cpp will use its communist ideology to control cambodia. the cpp will serve its viets boss and crush anyone to gain power. Look at what happened in 1997. mr hun sen moved to crush all political parties so he could hold on to power. You can not be firends with the cpp or make deals with mr hun sen. You have to fight for your life, there is no other way to deal with the former khmer rouge.

and remember too that two wrongs don't make it rights. if we see some individuals in cambodia is not that smart and so on, perhaps we overseas can help advice them or educate them to see and to understand, that's called proactive. because living overseas like in the usa, for example, makes us understan more and educated more because we are living in the land of god, whereas our less fortunate brothers and sisters in cambodia are so lack due to limited education, limited view and understanding etc...however, don't label them with bad names, etc, instead be smart and try to lead by example, etc... everyone needs help once in a while, no body is perfect, really!

well, it's called change, however, change don't easy come overnight, though; some of us have to have some patient! instead of use force to make change, especially knowing what cambodia and khmer people went through under the stupid KR regime and the pain and suffering and hardship our unfortunate people know of so much in the past decades or so, why not use other methods as there are many ways to get to the same point or destination. i think some of us really need to understand that there are more than one way to get from point A to point B. that is part of being smart about everything, too, you know. it is also called being broad minded or open minded like this. life is full of learning and making mistake but if they fail to listen and learn from others or past mistake, who to blame but our own failure. i don't think we can ignore the learning of people's skill or social skill, here. remember in america, nobody is ever too old to learn, colleges are always open to everybody to learn regardless of their ages or how old they are, everyone. i think we need to understand the system as well if we were to help others.

In theory being optimist is not bad to say in practical one who love Cambodia dearly has no power for decision making for Khmer destiny. If they tried seemingly were being label as left wing or U.S Imperialism. Since 1950 Cambodia ruling by power greedy leader masterminded by spying Vietcong and Khmer left wing group who knew to please this womanized leader.
As one of a former Student in the old time, my association with many Khmer students proved that our khmer is smart and intelligent if compare to other foreign students across Asia, Europe, U.S..
In fact they were not able to get involve in critical decision for Cambodia due to their pure mind to serve our people not individual.
The scare tactics of our Khmer leaders nevertheless are using until today from Father to adopted son the rule of gun and intimination for instance Ex-Chief Police KOURUN of an old time inherited power of bullet to Ex-Chief Hok Lundy.
In 1991 the Paris agreement gave Cambodia a last chance to save our independent from left and right. Unfortunately those leaders could save our nation in the presence of UNTAC to be economically and politically seft reliance in contrary the power greedy leader using seft ego for their family.
Hoping and praying, dreaming non stop for Khmer having a good motivation thinking like Jews.
Reminding like Palestine struggle to get back their lands taking big sacrifices instead of thinking about moneys and powers...
Hope that those in power big moneys enough one day will think about Cambodia and wake up to escape from another Kampuchea Krom.
The cambodian constitution is good enough to give power to lead to a better country free from foreign intervention in or out for our decision making.

UNDER AGE CHILD SEX
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed under age child sex.
Svay Sitha is a senior government official from Cambodian People's Party.
Svay Sitha had a sexual relationship with Tat Marina, she was only 16 years old.

ACID ATTACK ON TAT MARINA
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed acid attack.
"On December 5, 1999, Tat Marina, age 16, was severely disfigured in an acid attack in Phnom Penh. The attack was allegedly committed by Khun Sophal, the wife of a senior government official, Svay Sitha, because she was angry her husband had a sexual relationship with Tat Marina. Neither Khun Sophal nor those suspected of being her accomplices in the attack were brought to justice. Intense media publicity compelled the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Khun Sophal for attempted murder, but the police claimed that they could not locate her, although journalists reported that she was living at home as usual."

TORTURE AND MURDER ON PRAK SITHA WHILE IN CUSTODY BY MISNISTRY OF INTERIOR OFFICIAL
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed torture and murder.
"On the night of January 16, 2003, a street youth named Prak Sitha was beaten to death at the Ministry of Interior (MOI) headquarters after he was arrested and detained by off-duty MOI officers on suspicion of theft. His body - bearing numerous injuries to the head, torso, arms, and legs - was dumped at a Phnom Penh pagoda the following morning by ministry officers, in violation of police regulations regarding deaths in custody. No criminal charges were filed in connection with this death. In December 2004, the case was cited by the UN secretary-general's special representative for human rights in Cambodia - who stated that Prak Sitha died at the ministry "following beatings by a known police officer" - as an example of a "consistent and continuing pattern of impunity" in Cambodia."

Hun Sen's personal Bodyguards Unit (Brigade 70) is a terrorist organization.
Hing Bunheang is a March 30, 1997 Grenade Attack suspect identified by the FBI.
Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime had committed murder, again.
"On September 4, 2008, Mean Sokchea, a RCAF major working in Brigade 70, shot dead 21-year-old waitress Put Samphors at a restaurant in Kandal province. Mean Sokchea, in a drunken stupor, fired his gun and apparently mistakenly hit Put Samphors in the stomach. She was taken to a hospital but later died of her wounds. Mean Sokchea was detained by the police overnight but was then released, allegedly after intervention by Hing Bun Heang. Put Samphor's family received US$2,700 from Mean Sokchea, and the police told them that their daughter was shot while authorities were chasing robbers."

BUTCHERS ON A SMALLER SCALE:
HUN SEN AND THE CAMBODIAN PEOPLE'S PARTY
by Bruce Sharp

On July 7, 1997, Hun Sen, the leader of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), overthrew Prime Minister Norodom Ranariddh in a brutal, bloody coup. Two days of fighting left at least 58 people dead and hundreds wounded. Ranariddh's forces were overwhelmed.

The atmosphere in the weeks prior to the coup was one of optimism. Rumors surfaced that Pol Pot, the head of the hated Khmer Rouge, had been captured, and would be turned over to the government to stand trial. The Khmer Rouge were defeated, consumed in the end by their own violence and infighting. But in a bitter twist of fate, killers have become a sought-after commodity in Cambodia. The remaining Khmer Rouge were a prize. Ranariddh, whose soldiers had been battlefield allies of the Khmer Rouge throughout most of the Eighties, seemed poised to absorb them into his ranks. Hun Sen, fearing the effect that this might have on his attempts to consolidate his power, moved to crush Ranarridh before the Khmer Rouge could join him.

In the days leading up to the coup, Hun Sen protested loudly that the Khmer Rouge were murderers, and that they should have no place in Cambodian politics. This is a admirable sentiment. But it is rather odd to hear it from Hun Sen, who is himself a former Khmer Rouge soldier. His defection from the Khmer Rouge came only when one of the many purges conducted by the Khmer Rouge came to focus on his own ranks. One can only assume that he had no particular objection to genocide, so long as it was not directed at him personally.

In the days following Ranariddh's overthrow, Hun Sen's soldiers hunted down supporters of Ranariddh's FUNCINPEC party. Several of the victims were apparently tortured before being murdered; four of the bodyguards of Nhiek Bun Chhay, Ranariddh's top military commander, were found with their eyes gouged out. (Nhiek Bun Chhay narrowly escaped.) Former Interior Minister Ho Sok was shot in the head while in the custody of Hun Sen's military. Chau Sambath, an intelligence expert for Ranariddh, was "shot while trying to escape" according to one CPP account, and "committed suicide" according to another. The United Nations, meanwhile, reported that several persons imprisoned in the wake of the coup had been tortured; they were beaten, forced to drink sewer water, and some had their fingers crushed in metal clamps. Thirty detainees were held in an unlit, unventilated cell roughly six feet wide by twenty feet long. In a haunting echo of the Khmer Rouge years, the CPP denied that FUNCINPEC supporters had been killed. They had, according to the CPP, been sent for "re-education." In the aftermath of these incidents, Amnesty International has issued an appeal to embassies in Cambodia to provide shelter to Royalist party members. Hun Sen's soldiers, meanwhile, celebrated their victory with a looting spree throughout much of Phnom Penh. Even hospitals were not spared. Soldiers stole medicine, beds, and blankets, leaving nothing behind for the care of the wounded. When the UN Human Rights office publicized the killings and torture, Hun Sen called for the replacement of the UN staff and demanded an apology from the UN.

Some scholars have promoted the idea that the core of the Cambodian People's Party was formed from the ranks of "good Khmer Rouge" -- a noble, caring group of kind-hearted revolutionaries who were oppressed by the evil "Pol Pot - Ieng Sary clique."

Anyone who believes that this is so should be reminded that Hun Sen initially acquired the role of "co-Prime Minister" only because he threatened renewed civil war when he lost the UN-sponsored elections in 1993. (For details, see Alan Knight's essay on Hun Sen and Democracy.) Those who still harbor lingering doubts should recall the Easter Sunday grenade attack on pro-democracy protesters in Phnom Penh, an assault that killed at least 18 people and wounded as many as 100 more. After the incident, Hun Sen suggested that opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who arranged the demonstration (and whose bodyguard was killed in the attack), should be arrested. When he finished blaming the victims, he suggested that the Khmer Rouge were responsible. In a sense, he is probably correct: When Hun Sen looks in the mirror, a Khmer Rouge stares back.

The 1998 elections were intended to bestow the mantle of legitimacy on Hun Sen. But the elections were a farce. (See the 1998 Human Rights Watch Report on Cambodia for a detailed description of the conditions in Cambodia leading up to the supposedly "fair" election.) The international community seemed to have exhausted its patience with Cambodia, and clearly intended to wash their hands of the entire matter. Observers rushed to declare the elections "legitimate" even before the votes were counted. After the failure of the UN to enforce the results of the previous election, and the muted reaction to the 1997 coup, one suspects the rest of the world simply decided to declare victory and go home.

After decades of war and violence, the Khmer Rouge are gone. The Khmer Rouge were brutal, stupid despots. Hun Sen is a brutal, intelligent one. In an article in the Salt Lake Tribune, noted Cambodia scholar Stephen Heder described Hun Sen in a single sentence: "He is both a competent political administrator and a ruthless political criminal."

Surely, the people of Cambodia deserve better.

Gentleman

Thank you for your comments, predominently we all expressed our sincere concerns wether we are oversea or in our homeland.

Many of us noted that differences in our view as if it is political or individual one. There are different political groups such as CPP, SRP ,HRP ...etc.

The important point is the unity, for the sake of cambodian survival and our beloved country.

Survival of our fellow cambodians is all about respect their rights(human rights: rights for foods, clothings, shelter, and medical assistance).Coincidently these are the concept of compassion in buddhism, likewise in many other religions.

However, what we should define is our common grounds for our unity.
Regardless what differences your personnal views are, there are always common goals.
Objectives and strategies can be different relative to LOGICAL PROCESSES and RELEVENCE OF TIME and other factors.

Our common grounds are:
1) our beloved homeland, cambodia.
2) our constitution agreed by peace accords 1991.
3)our integrity and sovereinty.
4)our culture, behaviour and psychological patterns which bond us as a nation. And culture is adjustable and adaptable relevant to time frame, and the social development. Culture is variable, in mathematical term, and changes always influence it.

Once, we defined and accept our common grounds, then unity can be easily matured. Thus regardless any political views we hold, or political groups we are in we accept that we do not destroy one another as cambodian anymore.

Political view considered to be liberal/republic emphasised on more privatisation for purpose of stimulation either economic or some form of managements.Liberal economic relies more on capitalism.

Political view considered to be communist or socialist is more emphasised on public priorities.

What have led to conflicts are greed and ignorances. And that is conflicts of interests.Often our human desires blind ourself from sensble view with respect.

I admire your courage and all comments, and may I pledge for your tolerance and consideration of our comment grounds.

Very encouraging article. Of course, to confrontationally anti-cpp is not a smart way. Under current Hun Sen's horrible approach, it seems no one can confront him or adjust his arrogant behavior.

One of the best approaches is let him tumbling from his own arrogant approaches.

Khmer Mchas Srok has deserved to not confront with CPP, but with Hun Sen and Hanoi. Please, listen Hun Sen is not CPP, and CPP is not Hun Sen.

Hi, 11:19AM,
Your are right on the money. As I said earlier: The mentality of these puppets will not yield to no one. Why?
1-They made deals and sined agreements with Yuons already. I want to mean they exchange benefits. They give the Yuons what they want; they Yuons protect them. The more benefit they give to Yuons, the longer the Yuons protect them, so the can rob the nation futher.
2-They know that people like them, who possess a little education, will never have another golden chance as this one. Why should they share it the others?
3-They are atheists who possess no religious belief-I mean a belief in Buddhism-therefore they will never share equal happiness and fortune with all Khmer people.
4-Becuase they were installed in power, and have been securely protected by Yuons, they will never accept the loss. This is the character of the evils who possess shear arrogant.
"Never be humble to the arrogant, and never be arrogant to the humble"-word of wisdom.

The best solution to save Cambodia and to rescue Cambodians, together have to join CACJE's campaign that to colect One-Million-Thum-Print of people to file submit to UNSC for bringing back of full implementation of agreement of Paris 23 October 1991 to Cambodia.

This is only one and very best solution and it is a smart strategies of CACJE that leaded by young leader Mr. Sourn Serey Ratha and his group. Mr. Sourn Serey Ratha said in every where that "now it is time to act, it is not time to cry". He young but very smart and has lots of experienced included UN level.

To learn more about and to get involve for help the campaign of One-Million-Thum-Print please go visit www.cacje.net, you do not need to donate your money but just call your families and friends to donate their Thum-Print. So why not together join?

Any other just like to talk to show up their title but he/she had been never give us of any solution. Such Chak Sokhon and Sean Masavang, both of them travel to US for their vacation and then do some self-promotion but actually all information and all documents both of these guy stolen from CBC of Dr. Sean Peng Se.

Mr. Chak Saroeurn a husband of Ms. Chak Sokhon, currenly is an supprime advisor to Sihanouk and Sihamoni. Chak Sokhon use to travel to Phom Penh get honeymoon with her husband in the house that CPP gave her husband and she use to meet high officers of CPP such Sok An and other. So do we still believe to her movement?

Actually her movement is only a puppet of Monarchy and current monarchy is a puppet of CPP, so because of CPP is a puppet of Youn Hanoi, totally they are all the same puppet of Youn Hanoi.

Believe our self and confident our Thum-Print to getinvolve campaign of CACJE then we will be won together soon in future.

Any collaboration, no matter what make-up is put on, will not work when one party is being subjected to the dictate of another more powerful party. The goal of a collaboration is to obtain a compromised result that would work to benefit all collaborators. So, good luck and sweet dreams!

In another earlier article, there was an expression of optimism by a prominent "H.E. business man/advisor" which implied that business could strive while the political and judicial corruption still exist in the extreme form. History begs to disagree...

i'm sure every nationality have their old tricks. and khmer people have one or two as well. this is probably nothing new and has been going on for ages. anyway, i think we ought to question the benefit of such trick, especially when if is not true. i hope we are smarter in the future not to buy such tricks. i mean if it's true, then it is good to say it, however, if it's not really true, it is very damaging and serve no useful purpose, except hate, reaction, fear and fighting, etc... remember the philosophy that president reagan once said: trust but verify! i hope we are living that philosophy. i don't really buy what politician's trick are saying anymore. i'm smarter than that now! i think the more we are educated the more we learn to think clearly before we full victims to rumour, non-existent accusation, etc... wake up, people; we are not in the dark ages anymore!

lastly I want to say something to Khmer M'chas Srok if you are still around. I believe that you know the same thing as I do: Srok Khmer right now is mutually owned by Hun Sen and by Yuons. Whenever the Yuon get full control of it, then Hun Sen will be perished; therefore, therefore you must declare your clear stand in your conference which will be held soon. There is NO reason you need to kissass Hun Sen if you are really M'chas Srok. If you are pretending to be, then be asskissers.

i think it is good to remind our people to be vigilant and smarter about everything, especially to learn from everybody in the world and not to be narrow-minded or just thinking inside of the box because for one, it is so outdated, really! the world has advanced beyond that kind of thinking or mentality already, so should we, cambodia and khmer people for the sake of nation, etc... thank you!

I used to hear that slogan "Yes we Can" somewhere in MAD TV, then Obama stole from it to lure the voters to fall for him.

A good speaker can always get by, but when comes to practice "No, we cannot". The Junior 2 years Sen. is now realized that he is being used by the White flame Libs.

Don't start the party with champagne yet because just you said we Khmers have potential allies -China, USA, EU and world opinion/media on our side.
What I said is that the US has been working with Vietnam all along since the Clinton Administration and the recently visit in SEA nations by Jim Webb was no accident.

It was to isolate SEA nations from China and at the same time the Vietnamese filing a petition asking the wolrd to save Vietnam from China's expansionism.

While China is now a superpowerful nation and she also controls WATER, Vietnam's petition is useless.

However, I want to remind ourselves Khmers that we were cheated by the French, and by Viets, and the French were cheated by the Viets, so something we have to do is to stay in the middle between US and China.

Today in 2009, the Khmer are varied in the country and foreigners: Khmer pure strain, Khmer-chams, sino-Khmer, Vietnamese-Khmer, thailando-khmers, Khmer born foreigners, Khmer Americans ( American-Khmer), Khmer european ( french-Khmer), …….. Khmer born abroad of a couple of mixed, or who lives abroad does not think and not thinking always the same way that the Khmer pure born in Cambodia. The younger generation Khmer today which has not known Pol Pot does not react and does not think in the same way that the generation of its parents in politics. So on what projects of society and on what basis political and ideological modern commons can they hear and live together, because they are different from each other?
