A Thai citizen was arrested in Poipet Monday for allegedly insulting Angkor Wat.
Banteay Meanchey provincial police arrested the man after he carved the shape of Angkor Wat in the concrete in front of a public toilet in the border town.
His act constituted “looking down” on Angkor Wat and was “against the will of Cambodian people,” a police official said, a penal crime under Cambodian law.
The suspect has not yet been sent to the court.
In 2003, rumors of Thai insults of Angkor Wat were enough to spark a night of riots and looting that destroyed the Thai Embassy and numerous Thai businesses in the capital.
The arrest also comes as Cambodia and Thailand are seeking to resolve a long-running military standoff along the northern border.

Look at the pictures of the carvings, would this man spend his time to craft such decorations of Angkor Wat in great detail if he hated angkor wat or hated Khmers, especially in Cambodia where he knows something like that can create a lynch mob? Can't believe all the hatred being spewed here. I'm Thai, but I respect the Khmer people and culture. Our two countries share many cultural, linguistic and even ethnic similarities. We have every reason to love one another and cooperate with each other for mutual benefit. So to see that the actions of one man are being used as a reason to cast aspersions on all of Thailand is quite disappointing. I can only hope that the rants here do not reflect the views the majority of the people of this great and ancient civilization.
Well I think his carvings of Angor Wat are very good and respectful, hardly something that is an insult. You guys need to calm down and stop spouting crap. He isn't attacking Angor Wat and he isn't attacking Khmer people.
