Phnom Penh - Three Cambodian soldiers died and one was left seriously ill after the group ate poisonous mushrooms picked near an 11th-century temple at the centre of an ongoing border dispute with neighboring Thailand, national media reported Monday. Military officials said the men were hospitalized July 24, hours after eating the unknown type of mushrooms in a soup while stationed several kilometres from the Preah Vihear temple, The Cambodia Daily newspaper reported.
One man died July 27, another died Tuesday and a third died Thursday, said Mas Yoeun, the army's deputy commander in Preah Vihear.
The fourth man remained hospitalized in the northern city of Siem Reap, he said.
"They did not receive enough treatment or the district clinic was careless with them, and I think that they kept them for three days without giving them the medicine and they became seriously ill," Mas Yoeun said.
He said soldiers were last week instructed not to eat any more mushrooms collected in the area, which has been the site of two skirmishes between Cambodia and Thailand since July 2008, which killed two Cambodian and two Thai soldiers.
The clashes have strained relations between Thailand and Cambodia, both of which claim land surrounding the temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was granted to Cambodia in a 1962 International Court of Justice ruling.
The temple has been at the centre of disputed claims between Thailand and Cambodia since the 1950s.

Remembered when the first fighting happended, i believed in Oct. 2008?, khmer soldier had their rifle or rocket that did not fire? the guns were jams becuse they were too rusty and old...? this is how careless our leaders are! they don't care about the soldier's life, these soldiers risking their life everyday at the fornt-line, to protects our nations and the country! we should take a good care of them....
No need to fight with Siam. the first lady, Bun Rany will do the black magic offering at the Preah Vihea Temple, and all the thai soldiers will raise their white flags.

I don't know about the war veterans in the US, in Australia they are very well cared and well fed including Vietnamese war veterans who live in Australia. They receive payment regularly, they often come to complain when something wrong or their payment reach their bank accounts a bit late.
Both Australian and Vietnamese war veterans are very proud to march along in the parade on Australia day.
I don't think the US government has left them homeless and destitute. I think you should report to the department of war veterans or welfare department when you have found them crooked.
I cannot deny what you claimed as some of them still have nightmares from their hard lives during the war and mess around their lives. But most of them are very respectable.

Condolences to the soldiers' families and loved ones. These accidental deaths are this deputy commander's responsibility and many other commanders in the area. They should dig into the bottom of it with the field hospital and clinic. Some should be court marshaled or even in jail.
