First Thailand said it did not kill a Cambodian teenager, now they insist that they burnt him only after the teen was dead, can Thailand be trusted?

Thais say soldiers burned teen post-mortem

Thai military officers have acknowledged their soldiers burned the body of a 16-year-old Cambodian boy suspected of illegal logging, but insist they only did so after he was dead, the deputy chief of the Thailand-Cambodia relations office at the Poipet border crossing said Monday.

Leu Chandara said the officers made the admission during a meeting last week, but Cambodian officials are not buying Thailand’s version of events. “We don’t believe them and we are going to conduct our own investigation,” he said. If the story were true, he added, it would raise questions about the soldiers’ motives for disposing of the body without first consulting the Cambodian government.

“They said they did not burn the teenager alive, but why did they dare to burn his body without informing Cambodian authorities?” he said. “What they are doing is trying to hide their bad actions.

Officials in Oddar Meanchey province accused Thai officials of shooting Yon Rith and burning him alive on September 11, shortly after he was arrested and accused of illegally felling trees in Thai territory. Relatives claim he was lashed to an ox cart before soldiers set him alight. Marks on the cart prove he was alive at the time, they said.

Another Cambodian teenager, 18-year-old Mao Kleung, was also shot and severely wounded by Thai soldiers, but villagers managed to carry him to safety on Cambodian territory.

Like Leu Chandara, Yon Rith’s parents said the account from Thai military officials was dubious. “They are clearly just trying to hide the fact that their armed forces did a cruel thing,” said Nin Khom, Yon Rith’s mother.

Saing Yon, the father of the dead teenager, said: “I would request that the Cambodian government and international organisations find justice for my son and stop the Thai armed forces from committing cruel crimes against human beings in the future.”

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said he had instructed the Cambodian consulate in Thailand’s Sa Kaew province to investigate the case, but consulate officials were also busy with the case of 16 Cambodians accused of illegal logging along a disputed border area.

The group has been found guilty by a Thai court of illegal entry and destruction of forestry and has been sentenced to up to nine years in prison.

The Cambodian Foreign Ministry said last week it planned to appeal against the sentence.

Officials at the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh could not be reached for comment Monday.

I'm Thai if Abhisit Vejjajiva failed what he promised to Thai people that he will do whatever to reclaim the Khao Prah Vihan temple people will demand his resignation. And now he had realized that Cambodia is legitimate owner he is looking like a fool that he was convincing Thai people elected him. He had thought he can restore what the previous government duty to reclaim. Like we knew it too that even the pass PM said the temple and the 4.6km2 is belong to Cambodia.

Now he is putting his political career at odd.

Since you're a university student, you should have at least learned geography or world history in high school unless you are taught bogus history by your thai teachers. Preah vihear temple is clearly located in Cambodia and was built by ancient khmers. Thai politicians must stop using preah vihear temple as a political game.

I beleive the situation at the Cambodia border will end quickly if the US say some thing to Thai Gov. But as you know politic is politic. I am living in the US I have not heard anything about Thailand regarding to Democracy, human right abuse or child sex market. As far as I can remember, Thailand has coup every two years or so, is democracy in Thailand better than Cambodia ? What do you think if the same thing happened in Cambodia ? I bet you are going to hear about it everyday.
The US military can solve that problem in one week. They can use the settlite picture to map it out easily, but there is no benifit to do so.

So, this is US games playing with Thailand and Camabodia? i hope China an Russia step in immediately...

why not appeal UN to investigate this case? if not efective just do a rtevenge again THAIS (not people but their police r military) like the muslim do in their southern provinces). Our former KR group know how to this job better than these Thais fuck their mothers soldiers.

This savage, barbaric incident is wholly in character with the Thai military’s treatment of vulnerable, unarmed civilians down the years. In the 1980’s the behaviour of Thai soldiers towards Cambodian refugees (who had already experienced enough trauma in their country) became so appalling with reports of indiscriminate shootings, beatings, and yes, killings on regular basis that some UN relief agencies were moved to request that those border camp soldiers be replaced by more civilised and disciplined units.

Recently, illegal aliens trespassing Thai maritime territory by boats were caught, brutally beaten and forced to drift in deep sea.

I am sure when confronted with hard evidence, the Thai military will eventually admit ‘guilt,’ but this will be followed by admission that such practices are ‘isolated incidents’; they may even feign heartfelt regret and issue profuse official apologies over the matter. However, given the long catalogue of malpractices by the Thai military that are in gross violation of international conventions on treatment of refugees and displaced persons alike, it is not inconceivable that these inhuman acts had been deliberated or premeditated by men at the highest echelons of Thai authority and government in their medieval conviction that brute violence and the fear of terror offer the better lesson in conformity.

Well-intentioned Cambodians should also not make too much of the staged separation in Thai polity between the military and the law-makers in Bangkok. If in doubt, just treat both as constituents of the same body for the army holds the balance of power and often acts as king-maker, but expect their favoured clients to provide that veneer of democratic legitimacy and respectability as well as hard currency.

This is not the first time that Thais soldier had done cruelty acts on khmer unarmed people along the border and refugees people, this is including Khmer and Vietnamese who came by boats during 1979, cambodia should not hesitate to teach Thais bastard some lessons, don't afraid of their power weapons, it doesn't meant shit! because Thais sodier don't know how to used them, beside running fast....

what goes around comes around, really. siem has bad karma now!

First, the Thai commander refused of such shooting and burning alive incident had ever occured.

Now the Thai officers acknowledge the burning but only after the boy was dead.

The witness who sustained gunshot injury said the Thai leashed the boy to the oxcart and burned him.

Why did the Thais need to leash the boy to the oxcart if he already dead? The dead can't run.

These bastard Thais are hiding their faces but leaveing their asses in the open. Thai acharn "si trey saoy te choy kdet monus ros".

Thai is crual and I condemned their action. However, Hun Sen is not nice either. Ask Hun Sen, how many Khmer innocent people he murdered during his tenure as Khmer Rouge soldier and Prime minister? looked at the grenade attack on anti-government protesters and the 1997 coup. Thai killed Khmers and Khmers Killed Thai I can accept that because we hate each others. However, Khmers killed Khmers who are from the same race. Why we are so ignorant?
