Cambodia claimed Tuesday that investment in the country's mobile phones sector has increased to 234 million U.S. dollars for the first six months of this year.
According to the Ministry of Telecommunication and Posts, total investment in the sector amounting to 234 million U.S. dollars as of June this year, whereas last year, within the same period of time, the total investment was only 35 million U.S. dollars.
Officials at the ministry also said the number of mobile phone users is remarkably increased with about five millions of the country's total estimate of 14 million populations.
The ministry officials contributed the increase in the sector to the huge demands from Cambodians who enjoy their communication through mobile phone because it consumes less time than traveling to meetings with other people while their businesses are in larger demands.
Other contributing causes to the increase in mobile phone usage are the country's economic growth and the better living standard of the people.
In recent years, telephone and internet are the latest growing modern technology in Cambodia.
Nine mobile phone companies are running businesses in Cambodia, according to the ministry.

Khmers oversea rather have nice car then have a house. Khmers in Cambodia would rather have a new cell phone rather then a house. Oh hell, maybe when they're hungry they can eat the damn phones.
Finally there is something on a lighter note. Ha! Ha! you above are funny. How true! If I may add, many Khmers in the states rather have big, gigantic houses but hardly any decent furniture inside. Keeping up with the Joneses. Yes, Khmers here in Srok Khmer rather have $300 or $500 phones than decent running motoes. Every time they need to go somewhere, they elephantjack Sombo (the elephant at the water front) for their transportation.
Joking aside, it is good that there are many competing Telecommunication companies in Cambodia. It will benefit the Cambodian people in the long run by bringing down prices to more affordable levels and entice other companies in other areas to come adn invest in Cambodia. Telecom. is one of the crucial infrastructures in any country. Another thing Wimax/4G has been up and running already in Cambodia, I think. Way to go Cambodia!
don't forget that khmer oversea may own a house but 95% of the money borrow from the bank !! and pay of in 20 year 3o year + like 100% interrest?? the same as your new car hahaha and use credit card also mean borrow money from the bank, you owe everything to the white man mate so don't look down on your own people!
You, two guys above, have no sense of statistics. Not all Khmers are like that. Only some pumkin-heads would do that. It's true for extravagant people in any countries in the world.

And you, yes you 1:24pm, your statistic is way way off. the interest rate is not 100%; it is like around 5% now. the highest i've seen is between 8 to 10 percents. and don't you laugh too hard, everybody here drives car and you have been seen walking to any where.
