PHNOM PENH -- The Cambodian government said 130 garment factories have closed so far this year as the global economic crisis continues to depress demand for the kingdom's key export earner, local media reported Thursday. The LaborMinistry said the closure rate of one factory every second day has cost more than 60,000 jobs so far in an industry that is one of the country's economic mainstays.
Ministry figures showed that 30,000 workers have lost their jobs this year following the permanent shuttering of 77 factories.

Our Prime Minister Hun Sen had already said, "global economic crisis does not affect our country. If our people can't find job in the cities, they can go back to their home village to do farming."

I have been suspecting the economic malaise in Cambodia since the announcement of recession by the US (althoug the recession began a year earlier), however, Ah Sen has been refusing to listen to anyone, including his economic advisors, and therefore the recent news would confirm my suspicion of his ignorance and stupidity.

The Worldbank say that 290 garment factories in Cambodia which exports goods to the United States and Europe.
The sector employed 330,000 mostly poorer rural women.

How can be only 60.000 jobs get lost when 130 Factories are closed???
Seems to me that 120-150.000 Jobs got lost already.
That mean that 120-150.000 Families are affected as the Girls support their Families.
If this Girls have to go back to their Province it will cause big problems to the Families.
