Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh on Wednesday said he was willing to mediate a settlement between the red shirts and the yellow shirts.
"I see myself as having the obligation to foster reconciliation," he said.
Chavalit said he would get in touch with both the People's Alliance for Democracy and the anti-coup movement although he has yet to decide who to be included in the talks.
He was speaking before flying off to meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh.
He said he was paying a visit to an "old friend", expressing his readiness to clear up any "misunderstanding" between Thailand and its neighbouring country.
