PHNOM PENH - A CAMBODIAN schoolteacher and her husband have been charged for repeatedly torturing an 11-year-old girl they bought to be their domestic helper and held captive for more than a year, a court official said on Monday.

Prosecutor Heung Bunchea said Meas Neary, a high school teacher in Phnom Penh, and her husband, Va Sarouen, a retired Ministry of Education official, were charged with torture and human trafficking in Phnom Penh Municipal Court. If convicted, they could face 25 years in prison, he said.

Acting on a tip from the couple's neighbors, police arrested them Friday while they were fleeing in a car with the girl, said Major Mok Hong, of the Sen Sok district.

The girl's body was covered with more than 200 wounds, which were allegedly inflicted by the suspects, he said, adding: 'The couple said that they beat the girl with coat hangers, brooms, electric wires, and sometimes used pliers to pull her flesh.'

The couple paid US$400 (S$557) to the girl's 62-year-old guardian in early 2008 for the girl to help with domestic chores, Mok Hong said, adding that the girl's parents were both deceased.

Mr Heung Bunchea said the girl's former guardian, Thoeng Reth, was also charged with human trafficking for selling the girl to the couple.

Country of the blind and lawleseness!

let this be a lesson in life and society. i think there ought to be a law that penalize this kind of treatment upon another citizen, really. how else are we going to prevent this kind of cruel act from happening again. i think having law will protect everyone because, nowadays, people can seek justice by getting a lawyer to represent them in any case when it comes to justice for all, really! it's time to put law into practice in cambodia; khmer people deserve better after all what we've been through, unnecessarily in the past recent history.

What about the person who sold her? That person should be prosecuted too. The kid should have never been sold in the first place. Its modern day slavery to be able to sell someone like a property.

the viet meas nary is not the only who committed this kind of crime against poor people in Cambodia but there are thousands and thousands other meas nary who are committing this kind of crime against poor people to begin by cpp high officers as rich people. So meas nary and her man should not the only to be put in prison.

does hun has some courage and honesty to clean his terrible corrupted society . I’m here to see his real actions, not the false one . Meas nary should not be used as sample to hide other crime committed by hun sen and his people. Running fake Croix rouge for political recuperation and building thousands and thousands pagodas don’t make hun sen and co look better or can save them from crimes because those money are robbed from poor people who are starving of hungry and live so miserably.

Under AH HUN SEN regime, there is no law and order! Cambodian people are allowed to be bought and sold like commodity! Human trafficking is alive and well in Cambodia!

This is a heartbreaking!

We all cannot imagine that this kind of slavery still exists.
These couple properties has to be put into trustee, to ensure this orphan will recover and capable of living independently.
