Gates Foundation pours $115 million into new malaria drugs

Health experts around the globe were chilled earlier this year by the discovery that malaria in Cambodia has evolved resistance to the most promising drug in medicine's arsenal.

With the effectiveness of artemisinin under threat, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is stepping up its investment in new malaria drugs with a $115 million grant to the Geneva-based Medicines for Malaria Venture. The grant brings the foundation's total funding for the group to $317 million.

Malaria has long been a top priority for the Gateses, who in 2007 took the controversial step of calling for eradication of the disease. Many experts question whether that will ever be possible, but foundation CEO Jeff Raikes recently said the world's biggest philanthropy is refocusing its malaria programs with the goal of eradication in mind.

The "E-word," which some malaria scientists utter with trepidation based on past failures, is repeated three times in MMV's four-paragraph press release on the new grant.

In February, MMV and drugmaker Novartis introduced a sweet-tasting version of the combination malaria drug Coartem for African children. The group is funding work on more than 50 drug candidates, ten of which are in clinical development.

if only khmer leaders were just a few % ( percentage) like Bill gates.

khmer leaders too self centered, too focus on their pride, their rank, and how big of a villa they have to compete with their neighbor or political opponents.

That kind of mindset doesn't help anybody. Plus, those foolish thing doesn't last. Its only destroy a nation in the long run.

So, May God bless microsoft and bill gates.

Cambodians are resilient and passionate people who have potential in changing the face and esteem of national identity. We have to stop self-pity but to boost confidence in self in order to reflect national confidence.

I wonder why not current set up a team of grant seekers to devise implementation plan and strategy to directly approach funding agencies like Gates.
Instead of Switzerland does it, why not Cambodia health ministry see to possibility in bringing in Cambodia young and bright to intern and be mentored by Swiss drug company.
Or else, Cambodia seek fund to build lab and school of pharmacy in worldly standard to meet own needs.
Nice to have tall skyhigh buildings but the world respects only people who can help themselves to help own nation.

Cambodia is still far behind in comaparison to Viet ot Siam. When King Bhumibol gets ill,Siam doctors treat and care for him. When the well to do Cambodians get sick they seek Viet health care services in Prey Nokor or other towns. Also when Chea Sim or Hun Sen were sick either one did not choose Cambodian doctors to treat themselves.

Each packed and left Cambodia headed to Hanoi or Bangkok. Why not staying in Cambodia and be taken care by own doctors?

Cambodia is still a State of confusion since the Cambodians woke up and realiszed that their country was/is quietly invading by the Vietnamese. Many Cambodians whose named I don't recall were poisoned though, the families of the victims seemed to know their killers. Those incidents are the sources of their concerns.
In Cambodia real Cambodians cannot trust anyone not even their own family members. I don't know if it is from the satire by the enimies of Cambodia or not, but this day thing can be possible.
