Insurgents celebrate legacy

Now there are Vietnamese everywhere because slaves of the Vietnamese took control of the country ... Without the resistance, Cambodia would be wearing a Vietnamese hat.
Veterans of the KPNLF mark their 30th anniversary, saying their nationalism and fight against communism and corruption remain relevant to the Kingdom.

THREE decades on from the founding of the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front (KPNLF) in the remote jungles of Battambang province, veteran resistance fighters say the group’s controversial legacy – and that of its president and founder Son Sann – remain relevant in a changing Cambodia.

One of the main resistance factions to emerge along the Thai border following the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge regime by Vietnamese troops in January 1979, the KPNLF prompted controversy for its role in the decade-long civil war against the Hanoi-backed government in Phnom Penh.

During a ceremony at the Son Sann memorial stupa in Kandal province’s Kien Svay district on Friday, a dwindling group of KPNLF veterans gathered to reflect on their experiences in the resistance and promote the continuing pertinence of the faction’s goals.

Svay Ngov, a soldier who lost both of his legs in the service of the KPNLF, said the sacrifice was worthwhile in the pursuit of the group’s aims.

“I made sacrifices for the sake of my conscience, which was to fight against the foreigners who invaded Cambodia, fight against the Khmer Rouge and fight against corruption in society,” he said in a speech at the ceremony.

“These three core issues remain unresolved.”

Son Soubert, Son Sann’s son and an active member of the movement, said it played an integral role in establishing the 1993 Constitution and helped usher in the current system of multiparty democracy.

“We fulfilled our aim of bringing about national reconciliation and, even if we have never ruled the country, we still continue to play a role in promoting democracy,” he said on Sunday.

Controversial role
The KPNLF was established on October 9, 1979, by a small group of nationalists, “white” Khmers and officials from the Sihanouk and Lon Nol regimes, unified in their opposition to communism and to the presence of Vietnamese forces in the country.

Recruiting its support from the flood of refugees seeking sanctuary in its bases along the Thai border, the KPNLF – with support from the United States, Europe and China – provided social services and waged a continuing insurgency against the Phnom Penh government.

The Cold War calculus of the age, however, created strange bedfellows. In June 1982, Son Sann entered into a coalition – the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea (CGDK) – with the royalist Funcinpec and remnants of the Khmer Rouge, an association that even today prompts controversy.

General Dien Del, the KPNLF’s former general chief of staff who was present at the founding of the group in 1979 and travelled to China to procure its first shipment of military aid, said the group’s aim was to act as a bulwark against the “Vietnamisation” of the country during the occupation of the 1980s.

Despite the Vietnamese military withdrawal from the country in 1989, however, Dien Del said, its influence remained.

“Even if the foreign troops withdrew, civilians remained and supported the Phnom Penh government,” he said, referring to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) – the successor to the communist regime of the 1980s.

Now there are Vietnamese everywhere because slaves of the Vietnamese took control of the country.

When asked whether the Vietnamese deserved any credit for overthrowing Pol Pot, Dien Del stood firm.

Not at all,” he replied. “They were an occupation force. Without the resistance, Cambodia would be wearing a Vietnamese hat.”

Cheam Yeap, a senior CPP lawmaker, denied the charge, saying that by throwing in its lot with Pol Pot, the KPNLF had squandered its credibility.

“After we rescued the people from Pol Pot and stopped Pol Pot from returning to the country, the [KPNLF] and Funcinpec set up an alliance with the Khmer Rouge,” he said, emphasising the CPP’s independence from Vietnam.

[We] have never taken a foreigner as our boss. Those criticising us should check and balance their historical background.”

Despite the controversy of its anti-Vietnamese nationalism, old resistance fighters said their animating principles – to resist foreign occupation, prevent a return to the “genocidal” Khmer Rouge regime and fight corruption – have been undiminished by time.

“Today, we find that all of these principles are still critical,” said Pol Ham, who joined the KPNLF in 1979 and served as the head of its information service from 1989 until 1991.

“We have contributed a lot to the liberation of our country and for [its] reconstruction.”

Noble end
After the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1991, the KPNLF collapsed after its civilian and military wings split into separate political parties to contest the 1993 elections.

Despite the party’s ignominious end, however, others said Son Sann was still able to play an instrumental role in the peace process.

“When people were repatriated from the border, the seeds of human rights and democracy were created inside the country,” said Lao Mong Hay, a researcher for the Asian Human Rights Commission who served as an aide to Son Sann from 1988 to 1992, in an interview in February.

“Unfortunately, because Son Sann was not successful at the elections, we could not translate the ideas that we cherished into concrete actions.”

I met Son Sann when I was a little kid, seemed like a nice man. I wish I wasn't so naive then to carry any meaningfull conversation.

Once I, being unclear about its politcal tendency, registered as one of the members of KPNLF in 1992. I resigned later as I found out the KPNLF was just a satellite of FUNCINPEC.

I dont know about where the KPNLF have done after the Viet troops was supposedly removed but during the process of setting up the factions against the Viets during the early 1980's, the CPP is nowhere to be found. They are placed there by the Viets for the Viets. Mr. Son Sann should have recognized the one person that set this whole thing up. His son now should recognize this person, too....Believe it or not, the KR soldiers hated the Viets as much or more than the other two factions (Son Sann and Sihanouk). Sihanouk is a crafty politician. He basicly sold the country for the well being and survival of his family. If he was just a little more loyal to the other two factions, our country would have been so much different and so much more prosperous than it shit that we are witnessing now. My Grandfather gave his life for that movement, I can never forgive our king

As a strong supporters of SON SAN from day one of liberation front, it was too late to realize that he was the clown of Sihanouuk only to revive the death of Sihanouk saga , vietcong, HoChi Ming to swallow Cambodia under NUK death body.

The truth is the truth, and there is only one truth of who is who. Mr.Son San is a hero, period. KPLNF was a real group of nationalists to libe rate our country. I agree with Gen. Dien Del, without KPNLF Khmer have worn DUON, the viet hat just like in Kampuche Krom, just like the Viet use to make former Khmer king wear Viet cotumes. And that's a joke, it's written in our history, it's real, it's a reality lauk Dr.Yeap!
Cheam Yeap used to be a krou pravattesass, we wonger while he sold himself to the Viets so chea.

The KPNLF are the srtongest faction

The reason why the KPNLF collapsed,
they fought each other after the Paris Peace Accords.Instead to fight the ennemy Vietnamese they used the systheme to eliminate their own groups.
SAK SUT SAKHAN,THACH RENG,ABDUL GAFFAR PEANG METH ,IENG MOLY,DIEN DEL, ECT...and some of them joined CPP.They are not HEROS They are crooks.
Can anybody comments the true?

1:34AM,
Can you take a little time to express your complete thoughts instead of writing bla...bla...like that, so people can understand you better?

It was N.Sihanouk who did put his hands behind the breakup of KPNLF.

Sihanouk feared that if KPNLF control Cambodia, he wouldn't get anything, so he joined CPP and barked for Hanoi's hegemony over Cambodia to save his monkey throne for his half viet son, but not for the survival of Cambodia as a Nation or Country.

Khmer fighting among themselves is nothing new. Like now, Khmer is still repeating the same old path. The proof is we can't even agree on who is bad guys and good guys, and are fighing in writting. As long as Khmer do that, we all will not have a country to call our own. Look, guys! How many nationalists in the KPNLF have sacrified their lives to oust the Vient from their occupation of Cambodia? Where were you when they are fighting in the jungle? Please don't alway criticise and look for bad thing in people. And that might be the cause for the nationalist group to fall apart. Who are real Khmer heros? You? Or we Khmer don't have none? If that's so, just take Indochina Federation.

I think they got confused between Son Sann former Khmer Rouge and Seung San Khmer Kampocheakrom. We called him lok ta Seung San. That's his picture standing on the right next to the old lady

3 core objectives of KPLNF should be maintained, fall of FUNCINPEC is due to cheap greed rotten leader Rannarith, brought shame to cambodians and king father.

We all are aware of that now avoiding to select SUCKERS as our leaders.

All I can tell you is this, you are such a dumb ass , you don't know anything about the history of your own Country .
3:59 AM , I think you are right . His name was Seung San and he was Khmer Kampucheakrom . He spoke Khmerkrom accent. He was tall and thin ... I know him. His name was not Son Sann , Son Sann was a Minister of defense during Pol Pot but he got killed in the 80s by one of Pol Pot comrade . I wish the news writer did alittle more research about Seung San and Son Sann .

3:54AM,
It doesn't matter how it's pronounced, you cannot correct the spelling of person's name that has been officially used from his day of birth; however, you can do so for fun, for example, Hun Sen=Hun Xen; Sihanouk=Xihanouk, etc.

4:31AM, the history guy,
Let me tell you about the two names that you mentioned in your comment because you don't seem to khow who is who?

Son Sann, the president KPNLF.

So Sen, the defense minister of the Khmer Rouge Regime.

. . .and you who called "dumb ass" appear to be more dumb than I am, right?

The KPNLF was just a front set up among different groups to evict the yuons. It was not a political party with strong political ideology. It was not a surprise that it was split up eventually. It achieved its aim, partly, at least.

Clearly, Son Sann had a place in history, despite his flaws. Who else could have done better than him at the time ? Some critics here inappropriately judged him.

4:50 AM : His name was Seung San ( khmer name ). Most of Khmerkrom use the word seung as their family name and Mr Seung San was Khmer Kampucheakrom . Have you seen him in person ?

Talking about those bit shots , if you can't tell the difference between who is good and whoo is bad , you must be blind or acting blind or just being stupid just like some of those CPP supporters. They voted for CPP because they thought CPP was good but later on CPP turn around kick them out of thier homes and give their land the the development companies.

Frankly, I have met Son or Seung Sann 2 times. One time was in the 1982 at the khmer border. And another was at Montreal, 1983 or 84, i am not sure, I was young.
And recently In Cambodia, I have had so many conversations with Gen. Dien Del and others ex-fighters at Khmer Border.

I believe in ex-fighters KP and others. They really fight Yuons !
Right now, Some of them have been forced to Adopt cpp's banners (Yuon's slave)...
Except Nhiek Bunn Chhay and some slaves whom really adopted CPP.
Because they have done some illegal activities.
For example, selling and dealing drugs !
Anyway, why fight a lose's battle ???
They had nobody to trust !!!

Yuons are so smart. They make khmer poors.
So they have no strength to fight.

To be able to fight the Yuon, make the economy run !

God bless Hor Sok and others !
