THE Human Rights Party has announced it is ready to join forces with the Sam Rainsy Party as soon as its prospective partner makes the decision to go ahead with the long-anticipated merger.
At a press conference Tuesday, HRP President Kem Sokha said the party was ready to join with the SRP in a single opposition front, and that people inside and outside the two parties want to see a united democratic movement.
“People have asked whether democrats can merge into a single party,” Kem Sokha said.
“The answer that has been given to us is that if democrats do not merge into one party, the result will be defeat.”
However, Kem Sokha said the party was maintaining three conditions for the merger, including a term limit for the party president, a change in the new party’s name and joint decision-making between officials from the two sides.
He acknowledged that the SRP and HRP have met eight times already to discuss the merger, with no result, and said that if the SRP leadership is unhappy with the terms, it should come to discuss them.
The SRP’s deputy secretary general, Mu Sochua, said Tuesday that she met with an HRP representative on Monday to speak about the merger, adding that the three conditions set by Kem Sokha were acceptable to the party leadership.
“We have not changed our will because we have made these announcements to the public already,” she said, adding that both parties had been too busy to consider the merger in recent months. “Our stance is the same – we do not dispute these” points.
She added: “We do not reject the change of the party’s name.… The new party must change its name, but we just will change it when we have the time,” she said.
Cheam Yeap, a senior lawmaker from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, expressed his congratulations over the merger plans but said the CPP was not scared of the threat posed by a unified democratic front.
“They cannot merge forever. They will have conflict together and be separated … because Kem Sokha has different ideals from Sam Rainsy,” Cheam Yeap said.
“Even if they merge, they can’t win against us because we have served the people for so long.”

For someone who only has a few seats, Kem Sokha is making a lot of demands.
I believe that this article is most accurate about the current situation about Cambodia. I too know of Hun Sen evil sins. He murdered people during the Khmer Rouge era. HUN SEN stage A SCHEME TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE TO ANGER BOTH HANOI AND POL POT to fight each other so he can use them both to gain power.
I believe that someday HUN SEN will be put to KR TRIAL. MY PARENTS KNOW WHAT YOU HENG SAMRIN AND HUN SEN DID IN 1979. THAT WHY WE RAN AWAY. MASS MURDERERS AS MOST KNOW HE tell people me HUN SEN GOOD, BUT ONLY FOR YOUR MONEY AND WIFES PANTS.

The real problem with Sam Rainsy is that he spends all his time criticizing Hun Sen, instead of devoting his time to work on a brillant strategy to win people heart and mind.
Making your opponent look bad does NOT mean making you look good! Does Sam Rainsy know that?
Also Sam Rainsy is too coward to confront Hun Sen. How can he win an election?

Well, if Sam Rainsy is a real democrat, then he should not have problem with those demands. But if he only wants to make all decisions by himself with his inner circle, continues to use his name as party name, and remains party boss for ever, then he is just another dictator.
That what he is, another opportunist politician who lies to the people to achieve his personal political gain.
As for the merge failure of the two political parties it's sad that they didn't succeed in their first attemp. Anyway I hope they will if they really want to save Cambodia from being sold to Yuons in the near future. If they can somehow compromise on disagreements and unite, they will gain more seats gradually. Eventhough they cannot win over the CPP in a short term, in the long run if they keep gaining seats, they will have enough power to curb with Hun Sen's threats. And when they have enough power to fight back, Hun Sen will be less arrogant and cocky, and finally patriotim will prevail over absolutism.

Sam Rainsy could only be opposition leader but never be a head of state, because he is not a go-getter and undecisive.
Hun Sen stays in power because he is decisive and willing to take the risk. Sam Rainsy does not have that quality.
Hun Sen is a Ninja. We need a ninja to defeat another ninja. Unfortunately, Sam Rainsy is a bureaucrat, not a ninja.
Lon Nol was able to plot a coup-dèta because he had CIA backing him up. Pol Pot was able to overthrow Lon Nol because he was willing to live in the jungle to lead a resistance movement. Hun Sen was able to get rid of Pol Pot because he has yuons. Do you see the point.

Name change should wait because the CPP could exploit it again like the did with the Khmer Nation party when they infiltrated and broke it apart. If this is what concern Khem Sokha, then there is an issue. Remember, Khem Sokha got his start from withtin the CPP and do you really trust him %100 at this time? He migh breakaway from SRP again if SRP change the name now and the opposition will loose credibility again. Name change should not be one of the top priority at this time.

I am not a member of any parties. I have my freedom to vote. No one can buy my one vote. I could vote for CPP if I wanted. I knew SRP couldn't win but I still voted for SRP. Why? People see things differently. I love my country Cambodia like all of you. I don't hate CPP and its members. But I can't vote for the leader or party that kill innocent people, destroy forest and water resources, steal people's lands, corruption....you name it. Some people see Cambodia is being development now. If it does, in what percentage does it compare to destruction?
As long as CPP doing all of these I will continue to vote for SRP even SRP can't win. I can't vote for someone to kill or destroy Khmer.

According to HRP internal rule, Kem Sokha has only 3 more years as the party leader (2 terms). I happened to see and listen to him once. He seemed to be hornest. He said he knew he could not win the election to be the preminister. But he wanted to show Cambodian what a democracy party is like. Yes, I see his point and I too can't vote for CPP or SRP whose leader is there for life. I first voted for FUNCINPEC hoping for any change. After that I have never voted for any party. If SRP and HRP join together I will vote for them. Like the other gay said I can't vote for the killer.

Moreover his brother left him to join CPP last year.So, with all this merging commotions going on is just trying to make SRP looks bad. I really think this is all CPP conspiracy.

The merger is a life time opportunity. Both parties are critically lack of human resources. It will be a big test of both SRP and HRP’s leadership skills.
1. If they can’t merge, it means that the negotiation skills of both parties are so poor. How can they expand their party if they can’t find a common ground even with a party that has the same goal?
2. If the parties is merged. The next question is how to manage the new Party. If they can’t protect the core of the new party, it means that they don’t have the capability to manage the whole land.
Wish the two will merge, well manage, extend to other small parties, win an election, and well lead the country.

For whom who doesn't know what's happen inside of both parties.Before Kem Sokha create his Political Party,they both (KS &SR)have a change to talk and with the only one request from KS is to change the Party name,KS will join with the new party name.When time come by and name no change KS announced his Party.Before the Election 2008 EU try to meet KS & SR to get together but SR run away from this meeting.SR compare his Party as a big tree have a roots,friuts and shade and how come I need anybody else.Now I go back to inside of SR party.From my point of view,SR is in the position hostage of Eng Chhay Eang and his clan.ECE is a gambler and have a good friends of CPP.CPP guarantee if SRP do the way as they do right now,CPP will gave a financial support and one most important is life insurance for SR personel.Two groups will deside on this decision.SR is in the middle but unluckly his wife is on ECE clan. But we can also talk about the principle democracy. You and I would agree what it rests in the INSTITUTIONS such as the rule of laws not the rule of man--any man. Moreover, I want to point out that merely changing the man is not even enough. In Mexico for more 70 years, the ruling party just appoint the next man in line when the term limit reached. Is that good enough for you? Now in the U.S. prior to the term limit, FDR ruled from 1932 to 1945, yet there were democracy.
Since I am not member of the Sam R. Party, and they elected him every four years, I guest it up to them to decide not Kem Sokha.

I am not with any party but I think you are right. You know too much about SRP. Rainsy needs to do something to keep his party alive before he is gone.
Our gov't needs to be more focus on unity, team work, collaboration and as well as learn to ignore all personal conflicts otherwise it will slow down us in term of community building processes. At the sometime, we don't want other races to take advantage of us because we are too busy fighting with one another. Therefore please, promote unity, love, compassion, share and respect among each other. This is the only way to run the country. Everyone is existed for a purpose, so, accept them all as one. I would like to make a request to all of our Khmer editors to call upon all leaders to come together as one and to discuss about what else need to be done, especially about “national security”.....Aust
Think about how much time Sam Raingsy has spent and how hard he and his party worked for the change of the country and and how many lives the party has lost and how brave he is to be against those bloody violent leaders and how long of his life he has devoted for this country. Let's go back to the basic thinking. Every thing we do we must think of cost and benefit. Now, think for yourself-the benefit of SRP is 3 seats if agreeing with Kem Sokha which is a lot less then cost. Therefore, anyone with rational thinking will not do if the cost is more then the benefit. Just that simple!
