Phnom Penh police clashed with demonstrating teachers on Monday, as a union demonstration for higher government salaries was banned.

Teachers are demanding a raise from around $30 a month to $250, a demand the government said was not possible.

Police said the members of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association had gathered in public without a permit. No one was injured, witnesses said.

One cannot teach on an empty stomach,” said Rong Chhun, president of the teacher’s association.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian Confederation of Trade Unions on Monday requested the Ministry of Labor raise minimum salaries for factory workers from $50 per month to $93, as high food prices continue to eat into monthly budgets.

The minimum salary was “not a lot,” conceded Ken Loo, secretary-general of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia. “But $50, for the workers, as a minimum, the workers can survive.”

If they work with incentives from factories, working hard to sew many garments, workers can earn up to $150 a month, he said.

“We want to create the incentive for the workers to work hard,” he said.

i think teachers' salary should be increase to this amount in order to match up with the cost of living and as an incentive for them to curb corruption, etc... please think about it. maybe $50 ten years ago ok, but nowadays, $50 can't even pay the rent, etc... especially if you have a big family to support, really. there ought to be a debate about this in the national assembly, really! perhaps, teachers should keep on making demand and push it for better pay. if they don't speak up for themselves, nobody will, really. more power to teachers' union.

Those big shots from CPP got millions of dollars at home and in the Bank and in one day they spend more than one month of teacher's salary that's why they don't know how suffering it is living on $ 30.00 a month . Give Hun Sen , Chea Sim , Heng Somrin , Cheam Yeap and alot more $ 30.00 a month to see how long they can servive .

If government were to get serious about raising our people out of poverty. The teacher salary must fall in line with the cost of living. So long as their pay is inadequate, the future of Cambodia will always be at the mercy of Corruption, and fear. The indifference and ignorance that has become common place in the world today can be defeated by the enlightening of the generations to come. When we empower the masses with knowledge and wisdom, we bring them out of darkness... darkness of the mind. In doing so we give them the power to change their situation, and eventually shape the destiny of a Free and Fair Cambodia.

Teachers wanted to increase their salaraies from $30 to $250 were impossible, we don't have such money, but maybe we can increase it, from $30 to $50. In addition, we were able to increase garment workers the same ways.

New Phally,
Why it is possible for each of Hun Sen's bodyguards to get paid $600/month? Can you give a little more details? I think you are still mentally ill, dude.

Of course a Bodyguard will get more Salary as he is willing to "Give his Life" for his boss.

That is not the Question.

Teachers are paid by the Government.
The Government get money from the taxes of the People.

Look around in Cambodia. They all dont want to pay taxes.
Always complain about things are too expensive.

You get what you paid for!

Teacher already have 200$ as they ask the students for money in Phnom Penh.

One more thing is that they are low qualified. For 250$ I can get a Filipino qualified teacher.

Please wake up guys!!!

Just think when People from other countries read this comments, what do they think about Cambodians?

You see this is what happened. The current Viet Cong back government dont even care about the teachers, the workers need. The government doesnt to see your people getting educated because they afraid they cant no longer manipulate your mind and control you. You NEED TO GET RID OFF THIS ILEGITIMATE government and vote for the right one. Stop being afraid and time to stand up for your freedom. Look at South Africa?

11:29 AM :
not just Hun Sen's bodygards are willing to die doing their jobs , police and soldiers are doing the samething , they sacrifice their lives for the Country and the people , why bodygards get $ 600 a month but soldiers only get $ 50 a month ?
by the way, people in Cambodia don't pay tax because there is no tax system , that's not an issue here .

I'm agree that teacher should get more pay then anybody. If we raise their living standard I'll bet you the quality of education is very strong.

At least pay them as close to the parliament or National Assembly.
I think NA got paid like $2000.00.

They should at least pay teachers $1500.00 per month.

I support this act!!!

this kind of inequality existed in cambodia since even before the KR era. however, again, two wrongs don't make it right, though! gov't needs to be fair to teachers and other gov't workers as well, really. they trying to make a living and have family members to supports. gov't should be fair, really!
