Thais Prefer Bilateral Border Talks: Official

By Pich Samnang, VOA Khmer

A Thai official said Tuesday the government would prefer to solve an ongoing border dispute with Cambodia through bilateral talks, a day after Phnom Penh proposed adding it to the agenda of an Asean meeting later this month.

Thailand would prefer not to see the issued “internationalized,” a spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

Asean leaders are expected to meet in Thailand Oct. 23 through Oct. 25.

The Cambodian request followed alleged remarks by Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Phiromya the dispute over Preah Vihear temple could be solved through a third party.

“The minister might have been quoted out of context in media reports,” Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi told the English-language Nation on Tuesday.

Cambodian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Koy Koung declined to comment on the media report. The ministry was waiting for a formal response, he said.

Thai Embassy officials could not be reached for comment.

What is wrong with Khmer Government? Why don't they seek an international intervention since we have all of the documents? Why are we letting the Thai dictating the situation? Does Hun Sen want to continue using this as a tool to boost up the moral for his next election? Something is fisher with this bilateral talk. It seems like whenever there is an election, something always come up. Khmer people, we need to wake up because this is Hun Sen's political game. You all will see, Hun Sen will drag this until the next election.

Thai only do what is best interest for their people. It is your stupid Cambodian government who is failing to urge for international intervention. PM Hun Sen want to continue using this conflict as a political gain and your people is falling for it. What a bunch of naive stupit people.

Don't take the speech of Thai Leader seriously because they act like a child and they have no power for decision making. That is why sometime they say like this and like that which is stupid and useless.

Thai will offer somethings to Hun Xen and Hor 5 Hong.

When they receive (.....) from Thai, they will not look for third party to solve this problem.

of course thailand prefers bilateral talks. i'm sure thailand prefer to steal cambodia's preah vihear temple, too. thailand can't always have everything they want when it's not theirs to begin with. cambodia reserves the rights to internationalized the dispute. why is thailand anxious about this international approach by cambodia? they have something to hide or know what they did was wrong? go figure! fortunately, cambodia is an independent, sovereigned nation, and has the rights to go international with this issue because for over a year now since the listing of cambodia's preah vihear temple, thailand and their unruly or extremist group of emotional brats think that cambodia should ask them for permission to list our preah vihear temple. so far, cambodia's cooperation with thailand wasn't working partly due to thailand's using their unilateral map and partly their violation of international treaty of 1907, etc... must we say more?

If both Cambodian and Thai talked about land dispute but each country is based on two different set of maps there is no way the talk can be successful. Cambodia has good chance of winning the case if it takes the matter to the UN while Thailand chance of winning is very slim as its map was drawn unilaterally as opposed to Cambodian map which is drawn in 1904 and signed by France, Thailand, and Cambodia.

For those Thais who want to own Preah Vihear Temple, they can come to live in Cambodia and obtain Cambodian citizenship.
