PHNOM PENH—Hundreds of ethnic Cham Muslims are now homeless after a fire razed their crowded section of the Cambodian capital.
The blaze erupted early on Nov. 19 in an area dominated by the city's Muslim Cham minority, local police chief Som Bunny said.
Some 300 houses were destroyed in Reussey Keo district, Ly Rossamy, deputy district chief, said.
It lasted from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., she said, adding that an explosion of a cooking gas or electricity in the area may start the fire.
"No one was killed or injured. They all were evacuated," she said. An investigation into the cause is under way.
"Some removed their belongings and went by boat to the other side of the river. Some others moved to the main road."
Although large neighborhood fires are increasingly rare in Phnom Penh, a series of suspicious blazes several years ago destroyed a number of slum areas, forcing tens of thousands to flee.
"Each of us has [lost] hundreds of thousands of dollars," one resident said.
"We lost everything... The firefighters didn't even try to stop it."
Under Secretary of State for Vocational Training Okgna Ousman Hassan, who was at the scene, said fire trucks didn't have sufficient road access to put out the blaze.
Some 240,000 Cham Muslims live in Cambodia, making them about 1.6 percent of the population in the predominantly Buddhist country, according to a recent survey by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center.

Not too long; that area in Reussey Keo district belong to vietnamese community. Vietnam planned to take over Cambodia in 2023 before Hun Sen die. So Vietnam cound expanding into Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillippine as they planned in 1930.
The Chams should not be angry with the Khmers, but instead they should know the fact that the Viets eat dogs and Chinese eat pigs.

When will the government starting to do something about road accesses in case of emergency. Millions of dollars could have been saved if the government do their jobs. 3:47PM, We call them Khmer Cham because their country used to be Champa, which was an independant state before it was taken over by Shitnam. Cham and Khmer muslim are two different things. Cham is their ethnicity. They aren't technically khmer. Should we call other people racist if they call us Cambodian instead of khmer? My dad told me once that if you knock a cham person over while they are in their praying position. They would get up again and resume their position until the praying duration ends. People did that to test them to see if the cham would get angry. If anyone did that for fun to a cham person they would have been an ass. I also heard that if your drowning, and a Cham person sees you, he would likely do things to make you drown faster.
I'm not buddist, but I think most khmer don't even know what buddism is about. They think being buddist is all about have fun and parties at the temple. Frankly, I don't like to be believe anything invented by the hindus. Birth place of 100 gods. Take your pick, but they all fail including buddism.

Among Khmer Muslims there are Khmer-Arabs. Those Khmer Arabs were allowed to become Khmer citizen during Palestatian War vs. Israel, many Palestatians had to take refuged into another countries, and King Ta accepted to take some Palestanian refugees to Cambodia. That's a long times ago, there are many children were born in Cambodia, and at least Princess Marie was one of those children.
