Dr. Tith Naranhkiri’s loose cannon

By Khmerization
17th November, 2009

“if you don’t help to row the boat, don’t drag your feet in the waters.”

“Out of nowhere, Dr. Tith Naranhkiri leaped out from behind and stabbed Khmerization at the back unprovoked.” This is how I feel when he labelled me an “ultra-nationalist” in his diabolic and vitriolic diatribes against me and Mr. Sam Rainsy recently without any provocations from me.

May I say that it is a privilege that my opinions had caught the attention and the ire of one of Cambodia’s so-called “super-intellectual”- a Cambodian-born professor of American Johns Hopkins University of high calibre. However, one would be very uncomfortable to be accused of being an “ultra-nationalist” by the same person who shared the same ideals and claimed to be a nationalist, a patriot, a Cambodia-lover and the defender of Cambodia territorial integrity, for expressing the opinions and defending the same ideals that he purported to represent.

I have no intention of launching a personal attack against Dr. Tith here, but in order to learn more about the man and what he represents, a family history should be examined. His father, Khim Tith, was a minister in the Sihanouk regime in the 1950s and 1960s and was very subservient to Sihanouk while benefiting from his patronage, only to betray him at the end. He later joined the Khmer Rouge and has disappeared mysteriously. Dr. Tith Naranhkiri received a Cambodian government-funded scholarship to further his studies abroad in the 1960s, but, unlike Mr. Sam Rainsy who went to study in France at his own expenses, Dr. Tith has never repaid a debt of gratitude in kind to the Cambodian nation as he opted to live his life in comfort in the United States. Then after the Paris Peace Accord, he had joined and toyed with the royalist Funcinpec Party in the 1990s, only to be so bitter with the party after he failed to win any parliamentary seat and secure a ministerial post for himself after the 1993 election.

After his unsuccessful political stint with Funcinpec, he vehemently and constantly attacked Funcinpec and often take swipes at opposition activists and other opposition parties such as the Sam Rainsy Party. Many people who knew him, knew him as a bombastic and an arrogant and a control freak who think only he knows best and can’t get along with any group because of his arrogance and I-know-best attitude.

After he returned to the United States after his failed political adventure in Cambodia, one doesn’t know what ideals Dr. Tith is representing now. If he claims to represent Cambodia’s moderate views, he never show it because during the past one year of the Preah Vihear conflict, no one ever heard Dr. Tith’s voice about Preah Vihear, one way or the other, beside launching his tirades and condemnations of Mr. Hun Sen and, sometimes, Mr. Sam Rainsy. By observation, he doesn’t represent anything other than becoming a loose cannon and firing cheap shots at anyone whom he doesn’t agree with.

I must come out and vehemently defend my Khmerization team here. Dr.Tith’s lumping the “Khmerization group” as an ultra-nationalist group is unfair to other contributors of Khmerization blog because all the opinions expressed here at Khmerization blog is the sole responsibility of Khmerization alone. The other members of the team are only contributors and have not contributed to or have nothing to do with my personal opinions.

Furthermore, I categorically deny Dr. Tith’s accusation because I have never been an “ultra-nationalist” or a revanchist as I have never advocated for Cambodia to send troops to retake lost territories or to invade another country nor have I called for tough actions or persecutions against other ethnic groups living in Cambodia. I have always had a moderate view on everything by consistently calling for a good neighbourly co-existence with Cambodia’s neighbours. But, with uncompromising patriotism and unconditional love for my motherland, I will not be silenced or intimidated into silence for the defence of Cambodian territorial integrity. If for trying to defend one’s own country’s territorial integrity would make me an “ultra-nationalist”, then I am proud to be one.

But I still can’t understand Dr. Tith’s comments in the letter because they seem contradictory and don’t make any sense. He mauled me (Khmerization) and Kulen Monorom, while lauding Mr. Rainsy’s letter which is defending territorial integrity as what I have always done. But one paragraph later in the same letter, he also mauled Mr. Sam Rainsy for uprooting the border poles.

I want to make it clear here. I have never attempted to “make Thailand the worst enemy of Cambodia and Vietnam the defender of Cambodia” as insinuated by Dr.Tith. In fact, I have always consistently advocated for the defence of Cambodia’s eastern and western borders alike. Maybe Dr. Tith has just come out of a coma or hibernation not know my views regarding the eastern borders with Vietnam. If Dr. Tith has read my previous editorials, he would not have said what he had said against me. Or maybe he has a hidden agenda against me for saying what he had said about me. If he had chosen to attack me because he wanted an attention, then he certainly get it now.

I am expecting Dr. Tith to be aggrieved and distressed by this article. And because of his arrogance and unwounded pride, and with the given name that means “a mountain jungle person” (nara+aranh+kiri), I am bracing for a very strong response from him soon. But to end my response, may I say that, despite my strong reactions to his shots against me, I still respect Dr. Tith as one of Cambodian learned men and hope he won’t continue to discourage others from defending Cambodia’s territorial integrity. As the Cambodian saying goes “boe min chuoy chork chuoy chev, kom york cheung rear teuk”- (if you don’t help to row the boat, don’t drag your feet in the waters).

Dr. Tith is too arrogant. He poked his nose too much into someone's business. Now he got a very strong rebuke from Khmerization. He deserved it.

He is not a doctor. He is a mister Tith to me. Mr. Tith can only spit out his opinion. Mr. Tith needs to show more actions instead of just spitting out his words to assist the khmer people that are less unfortunate than him.

Tith Naranhkiri think he know every thing. He is nothing to khmer around Maryland area. Nobody respect him since he went to Cambodia and cannot get the job from Ranaridth. He hated King and Samdach Hun Sen to the bone. His wife euroupean, He doesn't eat "Brohok khmer" he said.

You sound like an idiot person who try to defend your old goat king and your Kwak leader. I always gave a shot to people called these two thieves in the face when I heard that. You must have no conscious to use your brain how good these two leaders do or did for Khmer nation. They both helped to destroy Khmer people and the country.

If you defend them, tell me what both of them have done a good deed to Cambodia people. If you can't prove it, you should hang yourself.

I hate both of these people like Dr. Tith to my bone as well. If I can put my hand on both, I'll do it.

Ah Hun Zen voiced out loud against Ah Siem for 4km land, but voices nonething against Ah Hanoi who steal a lot of land in Cambodia. So who is the patriot person, Hun Zen or Sam Rainsy.

Some of Khmers said "Sam Rainsy did the wrong thing to pull up the post between Khmer and Hanoi border, but did that person dares to pull up the posts as Sam Rainsy did". I supported his action and Mr. Sam Rainsy is the only Khmer compatriot who wants to show the world that Vietnam stole Khmer land.

Keep pulling the posts, Mr. Sam Rainsy. We're all behind you.

I am glad that you let everyone know of Dr. Tit's history. If he quacks like duck let us called him a duck. He should be told to shut up and get lost. when he screwed us once he should not get another chance. Good job. Keep up the fight and it is an horable work you are doing. Power to the people.

Put all of your guys' education and professional achivements together, still it does add up to the man. He shoots straight and you don't need to get offended about it. Learn to balance your point of views. He has done his shared contribution to the country's cause, regardless how little it might seem to you guys. He is still by far one of the finest analytical minds Cambodia has ever produced. There was no need for this stupidity among Khmer nationalists.

That's simply reason why we Khmers have conscientiously got along each other? One madly said, "Right?", the rest of us unquestionally repeated it!

Forgive me that I am totally illiterated, but according to my rotten brain of stupidity, Khmerization ain't that good," I ain't attack him, but I still do it anyway!"

For reason that I can not comprehend, many Khmer elites, including Mr. Rainsy, are egotistical and arrogant. They think they are chosen by divine power to lead the country, and everything got to be done “their ways”.

In the past, the Nation sends these “elite” people to study abroad so that they come back wiser and more serviceable to the people. Unfortunately, the majority of them come back just to occupy high office in the government and steal from the people whom they suppose to serve humbly.

Don't forget his new found buddy, A. Gaffar Peang-Meth, another weirdo Dr. with lopsided historical views. Now a day, he is sticking to quotes in his writing.

In choosing leaders we should not sway and stray to look at he diploma.
Some one who exposes his diploma and his worldly knowledge will lead to deceive people and along with it slavery and suffering, destruction...

I know that carpetbagger Tith Naranhkiri and his father Khim Tith were ones of Sihanouk's confidants. Khim Tith served Sihanouk loyally as a minister and Tith Naranhkiri did return to Cambodia in 1991 but Ranariddh didn't give him any position so he returned to the U.S very bitter and turned anti-Sihanouk since then.

I hope Tith Naranhkiri will join CPP and have good relationship with H.E.,Dr. Samdech Akkak Maha Sena Padei Decho Hun Sen Varman I.

and Son of Dr. Hun Maneth will be Varman III.
Liberared all khmer from Pol Pot on January 7, 1979. Now a hero in

The unplaned Rainsy act is what leader like him should not be doing."There are not only those three or 4 posts need to be removed; how about phoum Daung, Rumduol, sway Teap ? Many thousands more... Will he walk to take away all? "Thveu tam tea neuk kheunh min cham-nenh avey te !"
Forget about Dr.Tith. If Raisy is 100,000 kilometres to the left, Dr.Tith is 100,000 Km to the right. Neak cheh Khmer te anhcheung eng! C'est moi le coq !!! Co-co-ri-co !!!

You don't need to pull down the whole border post to make a point. Sam Rainsy painted a point clearly to us already with just those 4 or 6 posts. Those who can think don't need him to demonstrate everywhere, if it happen there, you know Vietnam makes it happen elsewhere for sure.

And Khmerization, I believe you way overreacting, and now you begin to start going on a personal attack of Dr. Naran's personal history too.

If I read right from your article, all he did was gave an opinion on your stance, i didn't see him personally attacking your history or family background.

It seem here you're really a lose cannon yourself when it comes to temperament and patience.

Take a second an examine yourself at this critical moment in time here. Here you are taking a criticism with as much heat and explosive as a volcanoe but on the other hand, you have been writing and chastising Mr. Hun Xen for this very act as childish.

Should we say that this is a Khmer altitude? That no matter who is is on the receiving end of a criticism, if they are Khmer, they can never control their temper and take opinion contrary to theirs without exploding into anger?

I should hope not, you have been fighting against that mentality on Hun Xen, I think you should also use some the advice you dispense.

As always, I do respect your stance, and that of Dr. Kith, or Dr. Geofar, and other Khmer scholars like Dr. Lao Mong Hai. But you people of "high caliber" and "educated" mind should start demonstrating to Cambodia what a civil disagreement looks like, because both you and I know, the current government and Khmer society could really benefit from that.

son of a farmer said...

Of course, we Khmer repeatedly make many serious errors, not only about nature, but also about human nature, and some of these repeating errors have undeniably disastrous consequences, up until our day.....unconscientiously killing each other, "Only I is da Best!"..

Perhaps, without any douth, the Khmerization must increasingly be felt much emotional satisfaction after madly posting this personal attack's article to Dr. Tith.

Since I am highly uneducated or not from the elite's family, I don't have any reasonable advice for both of the highest elites' Khmer, but should the Khmerization write a simple letter to Dr. Tith and ask him what the better way to help and solve the problem, insteading who is right or who is wrong?

Anonymous said...

I hope Khmer people have more solidarity especially in this difficult time. Do we need to work harder to enhance our buddhist compassion, Khmer patriotism, and brotherhood? Degree and seniority don't matter much if an adult is still behaving like a child without maturity. The Westerners use to joke that if two south Asians have to debate on making a decision, even after 10 years the debate is still going on: arguments and no action.

Is the adage "Puth Krou Kom Trap, Chbab Krou Oy York" obsolete?

Cheers

If we all are educated enough, we can learn to reconcile and leave personal conflict out of patriotism.

Can we please leave out the personal differences but focus on issues that do more harm to cambodians and cambodia.
Unavoidable that this kind of statement does rub in a wrong way.

What we do is not always right to the other, as long as we do not land ourselve on the abusing side then we all ought to learn to accept that.

Khemerisation, you already expressed your thought in relation to Dr Tith's view, and hopefully these different views will promt to a better understanding.
I admire your courage on speaking out articulately over issues concerning cambodian people and our country, please continue to do so as cambodians needed.

Praise to all.

Khmerization might have overreacted, but I think Dr. Tith has certainly caused his overreactions. To come out from nowhere and called him "ultra-nationalist" unprovoked like that, I think Dr. Tith is looking for trouble. So now he got it.

Imagine how Hun Sen feels when some KI and its fan call him Ah Kwac. We are all human and have the same feeling. This saga between Khmerization and Dr. Tith is a good illustration that everyone should refrain from using thoughless comments and inappropriate words. It does not help our cause at all.

Cambodia is an ill complex diversity society and with that, divert conflicts of interests. Cambodia has a lots of enemies, problems and predators while I decide to defend her, me too have problems and enemies who I don’t even know them or have problems with them personally.

While you decide to be a defender of a valor, of an ideal you should not be offend by attacks of people or your enemies or let your enemies or anyone stop you from going to where you want to go or tell you what you to have to do or to say.

Fix to your goal. Stand high and be master of your own act and be actor of your own destiny.

i think most contributors here have not been fair nor have they appreciated Dr Tith's personal and professional qualities - and have been too hasty to denigrate. For some reason the khmer psyche likes to "banteab banthauk" tall poppies..i think a lot of sentiments espoused by posters here are anything but enlightened. Of course Dr Tith can defend himself far better than i could, but knowing him from the 1990's the reason for him *refusing* to join Ranariddh's government has everything to do with Dr Tith's high personal integrity and sense of professionalism.

Dr. Tith is envious of Khmerization or something because he attacked him/her unprovoked.
