Hun Sen’s Hostage Ploy [-Thai newspaper clueless and totally confused of the actual situation?]

17 November 2009
From ‘Ka Fae Dum (Black Coffee)’ column, Krungthep Thurakij newspaper, November 16th, p.2
Translated and edited by Wacharapol Isaranont

Here and now, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen is seemingly using a similar tactic to pressure the Thai government by making what appears to be a false allegation against a Thai expatriate in Cambodia and throwing him in prison.

Siwarak Chotipong, a Thai engineer based in Cambodia, was arrested last Wednesday (November 11th) on charges of stealing the flight schedule of convicted Thai fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra prior to his arrival in Phnom Penh.

If the Cambodian government insists that Siwarak committed an act that would harm its national security, it must clarify the charge with Thai embassy officials in Phnom Penh and allow the engineer the opportunity to find a lawyer and stand in a court of law.

However, the truth is the Thai embassy has not been granted permission to visit Siwarak. In addition, it was not disclosed where the Thai suspect was being detained and whether he has managed to secure the services of a lawyer. This seems to make him a hostage rather than a suspect. What the Cambodian government has done is not in accordance with international norms.

According to Cambodian police, the Thai engineer was alleged to have stolen the flight itinerary of Thaksin, which it regarded as highly-classified information. But, is it so?

How could a flight schedule be seen as confidential information that could threaten Cambodia's national security when it is usually accessible to airlines, pilots, and air-traffic control centers? And earlier, some of Pheu Thai Party MPs and key leaders of the anti-government and Thaksin-backed Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship also revealed details of Thaksin’s visit to Phnom Penh.

What is more, did Siwarak actually steal the flight schedule and give it to the first secretary of the Thai embassy? What act would be regarded as stealing? As an engineer at the Samart subsidiary Cambodia Air Traffic Services, which was given a concession to manage flights in the country, wouldn’t Siwarak’s line of duty allow him access to the information on a regular basis?

There was no need for the Thai engineer to secretly photocopy the itinerary and send it to the Thai embassy as alleged by the Cambodian government (This is the digital age already!)

I could not help suspect that Cambodia’s allegation against Siwarak is just another political ploy to put more pressure on the government to accept conditions proposed by Hun Sen and Thaksin.

The Thai government must not play into Hun Sen’s game. Instead, it must carefully adopt diplomatic procedures, gather evidence to counter the allegation, and show the rest of the world Hun Sen and Thaksin’s atrocious plan.

HeeSirikit

We are family! Similar to the recent Thak-Sin and Hun Sen reunion!

A Former Khmer King who is part Thai and a Thai Princess who is part Khmer! Both are still living at 87 and 84 years of age respectively!

This is referring to our King-Father Norodom Sihanouk and Princess Bejaratana of Thailand, both are third cousins!

Due to the current political climate, we never thought the Khmer-Thai royalties are related, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of Khmer-Thai intermarriages over the past thousand years. This relationship has turned into a love-hate relationship which our younger generations often forget that we are really related. No two peoples in Southeast Asia have so much in common than Thailand and Cambodia (perhaps Laos as well)
We often refer to the Thai-Khmer relationship as a love-hate relationship.

At the time when Cambodia was a vassel state of Siam and Vietnam, both coutries fought wars to gain control of Cambodia. The royal family of Cambodia was under the sphere of influence from Siam, King Norodom I [1834 -1904] took refuge in Bangkok to study Buddhist scriptures while Cambodia's capital was at Oudong. King Norodom I, during his lifetime, had 45 consorts, 29 sons and 33 daughters. King Norodom I married his twentieth wife, a Thai commoner, Khun Chom Yem Bossaba [? -1944]. They both produced two children, a daughter and a son. King Norodom's son, His Royal Highness Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Sutharot [1872-1945] was King-Father Norodom Sihanouk's grandfather. HRH Sutharot married Preah Ang Mechas Norodom Phangangam [1874-1944], who also happened to be a Thai commoner. Through this union, King-Father Norodom Sihanouk is virtually unknown in Thailand that he is at least 50% Thai and has been a target of hatred because of the International Court of Justice awarded Preah Vihear Temple and the surrounding land to Cambodia on June 15, 1962. Thais often look down on Khmers, regarding them as not intelligent and civilized. This bias perception led King-Father Sihanouk to say that because of the witty "Thai blood" in his veins which led to his victory at the Hague some 47 years ago. In his memmoir, King-Father Sihanouk mentioned that instead of fostering fraternal friendship between our two peoples, we have allowed nationalism in our two countries to break us apart.

Producing many children was a practice in the royal courts of Siam and Cambodia to gain tighter grip of control over the country. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) [1853-1910] was highly revered in Siam because of his policy to abolish slavery and modernize Thailand. Rama V died in 1910, his son Vajiravudh [1881-1925] was crowned King as Rama VI. Vajiravudh married Princess Consort Suvadhana [1925-1985]. Princess Suvadhana was a grand daughter of Chum Abhaiwongse (a Khmer descent and last governor of Battambang province). Chum Abhaiwongse's wife named Thao Sri Sundhornnath was a sister of Khun Chom Iem Bossaba [?-1944], wife of King Norodom I. King Vajiravudh was a gifted poet and loved dramatic arts. He died within 24 hours of a serious illness when his Queen Suvadhana gave birth to Princess Bejaratana 1925. King Vajiravudh was the king who set the royal selection tradition in Thailand. He made a will that if Suvadhana gave birth to a son. He will be crowned as king and if it were to be a daughter the crown would go to his brother, Prince Prajadhipok. Prince Prajadhipok performed the naming ceremony for the little Princess Bejaratana on December 25, 1925. King Prajadhipok [1893-1941] (Rama VII) abdicated during the Siamese revolution of 1932. The crown passed on to his nephew Prince Mahidol [1935-1946] (Rama VIII) and then onward to King Bhumibol Adulyadej [1927-present] (Rama IX). Through this union, this is the story of how two royalties of Cambodia and Thailand are related by marriage from two sisters.

On November 25, 2009, Princess Bejaratana will be turning 84 years of age. She is first cousins with HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who will be turning 82 on December 5, 2009 and third cousins with King-Father Norodom Sihanouk who just turned 87 on October 31, 2009.

May Lord Buddha bless them all with good health and longevity!

That is no doubt Cambodia will push out all of Thai enginer for ATC and hold the Viet enginer to controll air space in Cambodia, because Angkor Arlines belong to Viet and Xmer, all boss in this airlines are Viet. Who is Khmer? Yes, Low level, not Top. Why? because Khmer are stupid, can't manage such business. That is sad.
