The government hopes Cambodia will release Siwarak Chutiphong soon, now that he has been allowed to talk to his mother on the phone, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday.
He said the government was in contyact with Cambodian officials, trying to learn the exact charges against the alleged spy so they could plan Mr Siwarak's legal defence.
"There is hope [for his release], but we have to first follow legal procedures.
''The precise charges against him are not yet known. I think this should be clear by tomorrow," said the prime minister.
Cambodia had made the right move by allowing Mr Siwarak to talk by phone to his mother in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Mr Abhisit denied a report that Cambodia had asked his government to review Kasit Piromya's performance as foreign minister or replace him.
