Thailand's weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved the Foreign Ministry's proposal to revoke a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on overlapping maritime boundaries in the Gulf of Thailand signed with Cambodia in 2001.

Following the cabinet's approval, the ministry will look into details of laws concerning this MOU cancellation prior to forwarding the matter to parliament for its consideration, Thai News Agency quoted acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn as saying.

The MOU was signed by then-foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister Sok An on June 14,2001, under the Thaksin Shinawatra-led administration.

The agreement enables Thailand and Cambodia, which share 26,000 square km of the overlapping maritime area, to jointly develop oil and gas.

Thailand and Cambodia have downgraded diplomatic relations due to conflict over an appointment of ousted former Thai Premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic advisor to Cambodia's government on Nov. 4.

A day after the appointment of Thaksin, the Cambodian government announced recall of its ambassador to Thailand in a move to respond to the Thai government's recall of its ambassador to Cambodia.

Are you sure that MOU gave more benefit to Cambodia than to Thai?

Revocation of this MOU will only discredit your government's accountability and credibility.
