BANGKOK - THAKSIN Shinawatra's visit to Phnom Penh benefits both the ousted Thai leader and his Cambodian host, but could drag the two countries back into a simmering border conflict, analysts said.
Golfing buddies in their spare time, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Mr Thaksin are using the row over the ex-Thai PM's appointment as an economic adviser to settle scores with the current Thai government, they said.
But analysts warned that the pair are now locked in a dangerous game of brinkmanship with Bangkok's furious administration that could reignite deadly clashes over an ancient temple on the Thai-Cambodian border. 'This new situation has moved Thailand and Cambodia closer to a potential conflict,' Paul Chambers, a senior research fellow in Thai politics at Heidelberg University in Germany, told AFP.
Mr Thaksin and Mr Hun Sen have been close since 2003 when they repaired relations after Cambodian rioters burned down the Thai embassy, and remained so after Thaksin was toppled in a bloodless coup in 2006.
The furore over Mr Thaksin's new job has let Mr Hun Sen 'carry out his vendetta' against new Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political analyst at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.
Mr Hun Sen wanted to humiliate Mr Abhisit after Thailand refused to negotiate over disputed land around the 11th century Preah Vihear temple, and after the Thai foreign minister branded him a 'gangster', Mr Thitinan said.

And now they call him a "jungle man".
Hun Sen shouldn't let oersonal hatred and grievances take pver the interest of cambodia.
War is nevera solution
Why blame Hun Sen? Preah Vihear belongs to Khmers in Cambodia. King Sihanouk won it at the international court and so the land surrounding Khmer Temple.
Too greedy is not a solution taking something belongs to Khmers who already WON.
is this a warnning from bangcock???
These are points views and analyses from neutral think tanks.
Holly sh@#! can you believe this article? Fuc# Thai are shooting Khmer all the time, and we never do anything to them beside some mothers want to make some money to feed her kids, or a 16 years boy want to feed his family, and they were still got killed, and nobody stop them, they are killing Khmer everyday. They send their army to occupy Khmer, and want to Preah Vihear, a temple built by Khmer and yet they sent their army in. Basically, Thai has no sense of shames, or sense of feeling quilty. And, yet these people claim that they are Budhist!
Thai alway start the war, and insult their neigbour all the time.
if hun sen game is bring war with thailand and not vietnam. somebody should get hun sen to get to youn.
This game is very risk for Cambodia, if the war break out, all poor Khmer must go to army and the elite in Cambodia fly abroad, that is the fact.
Fact my ass!
9:22 PM is right. People who opted for war with Thailand are people who are out range to feel the effect of the war. When time to face the war poor, people are most affected. Some people don't know that, most of the rich and the powerful in Cambodia have arranged their kids to marry people from overseas just so when the situation in Cambodia becomes deteriorated they will move their families out to live abroad, leaving the poor to fight for them.
What War? I am a former soldier but will not support Hun Sen game and go to war to loose. KR do not fight any more. KR will not support Hun Sen because Hun Sen ,Heng Samrin, Chea Sim went along wiyh UN to arrest Duch, Khiev Samphan, brother Nuon Chea, Ieang Sary and his wife? Now what's else does Hun Sen want help? NO,NO,NO.
