What is Thaksin prepared to do now?

November 6, 2009
The Nation

Thaksin Shinawatra claimed it was "an honour" to be appointed Cambodia's economic adviser. As his motherland is staring at a major diplomatic row with a close neighbour and businessmen in both countries are bracing themselves for an unpredictable impact, there is a thin line between "honour" and "shame".

In his fight to clear his name, Thaksin has stopped at virtually nothing. And even after the Thai ambassador to Phnom Penh was recalled and Bangkok decided to cut assistance to Cambodia, he showed no signs of guilt, concern or remorse. Bangkok was being childish and overreacting, he tweeted.

Thaksin's blurring sense of patriotism is understandable. Having been ousted by a military coup, convicted for a crime he refuses to accept and seen his own political movement neutralised one after another, he can be forgiven for trying to embarrass his opponents who are holding the reins of power. But everything has its boundary - and Thaksin has crossed it.

Only he and Cambodian Premier Hun Sen know whether the controversial asylum offer and the economic-adviser appointment were out of the latter's own goodwill or the former Thai leader had a hand in it. But even if Thaksin had nothing to do with the Cambodian moves, the least he could have done is show he cared about his country.

A neighbourly row of this nature can easily encompass the fighting colours in Thai politics. It threatens the whole country, be it yellows or reds or neutral Thais. Disruption of trade, border blockades, troop redeployment and the subsequent mounting tension on the already-strained relations will not discriminate against anyone.

Thaksin could have said "No, but thank you" to the Cambodian offer, but he has chosen to inflame the situation by saying the Thai government was overreacting, like a child. This came from someone who should have known better, who witnessed first-hand as a Thai leader what misunderstandings between the countries could lead to and who was on the verge of sending commandos into Cambodia himself to rescue Thai diplomats and businessmen running for their lives from angry torch-wielding protesters.

The difference between now and then is the attack on the Thai Embassy may have been caused by an accident, but this time there are people who seemingly want it to happen. Thaksin stands out among them. Hun Sen cannot drag himself into the Thai fray without Thaksin showing the way. If Thaksin's opponents' hardline stand on the Preah Vihear conflict was what first strained bilateral relations, things took a major turn for the worse when Thaksin's representative, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, visited Phnom Penh and kick-started the asylum-offer episode.

What is Thaksin prepared to do now? On one side is a country he once called home, where he is both loved and loathed, but on the other side is a place that is offering him comfort. A truly grateful man would do anything but pit both countries against each other.

These men are insatiable of power, fame, money, honor. Like the grave which never be satisfied with the deads. It is asking More! more! more! and more. They ask for more, even more at the expense and at the risk to the life of people they supposed to serve.God got angry. very angry. The table will be turned on their head, for the blood they have shed of many poor and innocent people is in their hand. Warning after warning from God, they did not hear.In due time, God will strike them down in an unexpected lightening force and speed to the whole world to see.

To Samdech Akkak Moha Sena Padei Decho Hun Sen:

Your Excellency, you have a vision of a thousand eyes capable of seeing the future and prosperity of Cambodia under your leadership.

By you who are bringing Mr. Thaksin on board to Your Excellency government, this is a very clever move which is considered to be an intellectual one. Your Excellency knows the truth and a Champion of Chess player and recognized around the world. This time Your Excellency will show Thailand the shoe is on the other foot and Thailand should have a taste of its own medicine.

Mr. Thaksin knows alot about Thai's internal problems, therefore, Your Excellency can perhaps better in making future decisions based on the assessments to which provided by Mr. Thaksin himself. It is a very wise decision Your Excellency. Mr. Thaksin was 23rd Prime Minister of Thailand beginning from February 29, 2001 until September 19, 2006. Holding this long from the highest position as a state man, Mr. Thaksin should be able to offer Your Excellency plenty of insight of what Thailand is propose to do in the coming time.

Your Excellency, Mr. Thaksin should be the right man for this position and you will lead Cambodia into peacefull time once again. God bless you Your Excellency.

Highest Regards,

ST.

AH ABISHIT government needs to grow up! First of all who is in power in Thailand? Not Thaksin! Of course It is an illegal AH ABISHIT government set up by the military!

AH ABISHIT illegal government stopped at virtually nothing to have his political opponents in jail for some trump charge and this is such a childish behavior!
AH ABISHIT is such a sore looser because now that he has the power and he doesn't even know how to use it for the good of his country beside wasting in front of TV go after one man name Thaksin! AH ABISHIT is more of an actor than a real politician because he is always hungary to be on TV! This is a fucken joke!

Thaksin is grown man and he doesn't need the "Nation" to think for him and beside he is a real politician that was elected by the Thai people!

Eat your heart out all you fake and crazy Thai politicians where you are all fail that is where Thaksin succeed!

Cambodia welcome billionaire Thaksin!

This looks like a political game with nothing to gain, but could cause the lives of the innocent people. Because Thailand would retaliate with military strike along the border if diplomatic does not work out. So please leaders! Be careful with your game.

I do strongly support ST's (9:05) comments. One thing that I am really concerned is that it seems the two countries' politics moved back to the 12th and/or later centuries of fighting, accepting and nominting the enemy or prisoner of war to hold a high ranking position in each government. For in stance, Cambodian's Aphaivong's family has been appointed as the first Thailand's prime minister 1932. The current political game setbacks the history between the two nations, as envisoned. And while this game is keeping ongoing, it will rest profit to another neitghburing country, especially Viet Nam who is relying and expecting to get the most benefits both economically and politically influence in the Indochina bloc.

Thus, Cambodia must refresh and learn from the pass experiences, otherwise one of another opposited visions (for example) CPP will rely on Viet and Opposition will rely on Siame, then Cambodia will definately be divided again.... See Kampuchea Krom and Khmer Surin for example..

In this case, I would suggest the RGC should determine some level of TOR, roles and responsibilities of a newly appointed personal economic adviser to Cambodian PM and limiting of Cambodia's secret sources involved in politics. Of course, he may help Cambodia to solve the current military standoff and help boosting Cambodia economy toward poverty reduction and development as role model in the region.

What is Tacksin preparing to do?

1. get 60% and more sympathy from his people in Thailand

2. Get sympathy from Cambodia and he had already won from her strongest man in the country. Everything else will go along with it. King Sihamoni had already done so.

3. Forcing Thailand's current Court System to rethink

4. Create a stronger protest in Thailand for King Bhumibol's pardon.

5. Get himself back to the election's booth and win.

6 One in power, Tacksin will roll out his power trade along the Cambodian's shore and else where in the country as he wishes.

7. Create better understanding between Thailand and Cambodia.

8 Who know that Vietnam may also be Thailand powerful brother and better, yet getting the right connection with China.

9. Burma always had a soft spot for Thailand under Tacksin. This will bring almost the entire Asia under her biggest brother China.

These are Tacksin avenues and vision for Thailand. Make friend and money with your neighbors and not make war. So if Abhisit fails to carry out a better way to convince his people, he will lose and that just the way it is.

One sure way out for Thailand under Abhisit is The Khmer Rouge Tribunal. It may look and mean anything to Thailand, but its ultimate victory will actually pull this half blind man down on his knees along with his powerful friends and Tacksin out of the picture. Otherwise Thailand under Abhisit will have a very tough road to move around, but plung itself into a losing war with Cambodia. Think KRT, Abhisit. Go to the west and get help.

of course, thai politicians are so childish, they are ineffective as gov't. it's like a joke so far everything they do. good for cambodia to do what is best in our own national interest.

Anonymous said...

It is nothing new. A lot of former european politicians did the same as Mr. Thaksin now will do for Cambodia. What wrong ?

He will be just an economic and not politic adviser.

Anonymous said...

that's explains it because abishit is so young and inexperience, really. how old is abishit? have no expect for cambodia. good job, cambodia.

To Samdech Akkok Moha Sena Padei Dekchoy Hun Sen:

Your Excellency, you one eye vision is limited of seeing the future and prosperity of Cambodia under your leadership.

By you who are bringing a criminal Thaksin on board to Your Excellency government, this is a very stupid move which is considered to be an unintelligent one. Your Excellency knows nothing the truth and you are an unskill champion of chess player and having bad reputation around the world. This time Your Excellency angers Thailand because you sided with their most wanted criminal. By choosing to walk on this path with your stinky shoes, Thailand will make your, only you, taste their medicine.

Mr. Thaksin is a criminal. Thais people want him to serve time for his corruption and abused power during his tenure as Thais Prime Minister. I am afraid that Your Excellency thus will fall into the same fate as him. Mr. Thaksin will not/cannot offer Your Excellency good advice benefiting Khmer but for his own corrupted mind.

Your Excellency, I don’t think a moment that a criminal Thaksin is the right man for this position. He only causes Khmers and Thais relationship become bitter and bitter.

No body object to this decision if Thaksin was cleaned - not involved in legal issue in his country. But this is more in Hun Sen persnal matter than national interest.

It is the right time for the Khmer descents, who are now living under the Thai occupation to wake up.

We prefer and just we want to be Khmer or Khmer Surin and not Thai.
Did you understand the real meaning of the Khmer Surin Musics and Songs. They are almost the signing of "Politic Protest" again the Thai or Siem occuptaion.

I think no matter how rich the ethnics Khmers are, they are still under tais' rule and occupation. I hope they would rise up and claim independance for their homeland like the Malays in southern thailand. It's out of question for them to join Kampuchea Kandal because they would fall into the hands of the viets. May be someday in the future they would come liberate the Khmers Kandal from viet's occupation.

goods to have friends. Imagine being a Thai, your government enforces a policy of hating and lying about yourself and your history. The Thais are been enslaved by their king and illegal government and the yellow shirts

Anonymous said...

HUN SEN,
You did a great damage to your friend THAKSIN for sure. From now on,THAKSIN will never be able to set foot on THAILAND anymore because Thai will viewed him as a TRAITOR.

Anonymous said...

All of you are strategically blind. What Hun Sen does is to turn your attention to Khmer-Thai conflict. This is not the real problem. This real problem is that the economy is plummeting. Hun Sen Govt is imposing tax on his subjects (SIC!) who are earning so hard. Second, Hun Sen cuts salary from public workers. Third, illegal demarcation between Viet & Khmer Gov't.

2:33pm, he may and may not. Remember when The Tacksin's govn. had agreed to list Preah Vihear as world heritage site. Some thai peopple got very angry and that was Abhisit's thais, because they are coward, stuburn and their refusal to recognize the Court of Justice in Hague. Not The Tacksin's people. The red shirts are just about everywhere now supporting him and his decision. We just have to wait and see, if they will also backing him up again for this one. Everything is depending on good communication. His party at home must do something to help turning him around. Just like Abhisit did an unimaginable thing by blocking their own international's airport and chocking their own economic by billions of dollars a day. Did he cares? May be, but drastic situation requires drastic measure and that what they did. It's Tacksin's turn to do something. Now, Thailand doesn't have choise, but rethink. Who are they to accept and legalize a government that did not win their people votes? King will die someday and he cann't be there to hold their hands forever. Please tell , if you know their way out of this one without going to war with Cambodia. Do Thais want that? Tacksin may be a traitor, but his party are still in Thailand. One has to be able to convince his people to do the right thing. That is to accept Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia one and for all and stay out of it for good. Then let everyone talk about the one currentcy in Asia and everything else good that come with it.

KRT is a hope for Abhisit, but the fact is KRT is going at a turtle speed and it's still miles away. Anywhere in between, Thailand will have to wake up and do something better than today.

Anonymous said...

They won't do shit. They will trangle Hun Sen's neck, if they can get their hands on it. What are you going to do The red shirt? So far, we haven't heard their action, yet.

Dear my beloved 12:39pm
I am sorry to say this if it offend to to you. First of all those Sorin people they will answer to you if you ask them are you khmer descent? In the public they will refuse ,the answer will be Thai citizen. Some Thai people they teach their people to hate Cambodian people so bad, they are thinking we are dumb ,ugly dirty and we are not MORN,KHOM descent. I know quite well some our Cambodian people will offense but in the modern world the kids they will learn and watch the human reproductive since third grade so the more that they are educated the less of problems that they have face in the future. In our Cambodian matters I know very well the Thai attitude either the Sorin so give up that dream ,just self dependent. In about 1970 The Sorin people are close to us khmer but after Pol Pot time and Viet slave time the distance between us and sorin people are a little bit far,but keep our fingers crossed that they will become independent one day than they joining us under Hun Sen(viet slave)

2:56 AM you're right all the way.
Hun kvak is a yuon dog..and he only bark and bite khmer. What did he do for 20 yrs beside being a puppet?..Khmers want independent but not with these thugs,Hunkvak CPP, King slave.
Khmer willbe prosper someday..not right, don't worry!
