An Australian man has been murdered in a popular Cambodian seaside resort, police say.

Officers identified the victim as John Edward Thompson, 47, who was killed early on Monday morning in the southern town of Sihanoukville, according to the local deputy police chief Kao Ratana.

"It is a case of murder. We are investigating the killing and we have not yet concluded what the motive was," he said by telephone on Tuesday.

Kao Ratana declined to say how the man was killed, but local reports said he was clubbed to death with wooden sticks in a robbery.

A spokesman for the Australian embassy in Phnom Penh said they had been informed of the death by police.

Cambodia still lacking of security and tourist protections, tourists are concerns about their safety throughtout cambodia...That's why most of the tourists love to spend time in Thailand and Vietnam more than cambodia...if cambodian authority don't step up their security, they will lose tourists to other country..

^^^^ NOT true. don't spread the unfound fear. Last year, two tourists were shot dead in their lounge chairs on the beach in Thailand. Many other tourists were murdered and robbed in Bangkok as well. As for Vietnam, many tourists complain of scams, thieves, and intimidation.

it's probably was an isolated incidence like this as it had happened anywhere in the world like new york, in thailand, in vietnam, in china, in the USA, in europe, etc; so, it could happen in cambodia as well, really. don't blame the gov't, it was probably to do with personal or something. thing like this don't happened often in cambodia, really. that said, the culprit should be punished to the fullest extend of the law for killing somebody!

recently there were tourists killed in thailand, a pregnant tourist. that didn't stop millions of tourists from visiting thailand although, really. same concept in cambodia because this sounded like an isolated incident which could happen anywhere in the world, really. let's not be biased toward cambodia. we don't know the whole story, this person might be abusing drugs, drunk, and so forth. that said, of course, it is never right to kill or hurt anyone in cambodia or anywhere in the world, really. my point is, don't paint cambodia as a scary destination because it is not fair to cambodia and other good khmer people out there. there are more to cambodia than this "isolated" incident, really. yes, who ever did this must be punished by law, really!

Have you notice most of the police chief are Viet Namese. If the Viet Namese get killed, the killer will be catch, but not anyone else.
This just to show the people that there are so many Viet Cong in Cambodia.

I know it: CPP gangsters are out to get the adventurous tourists again. It seem CPP gangsters are addicted killers of innocent random tourists. Why do people even come to Cambodia for? It is always best to die in one's own country of homeland rather than in the rotten state of Cambodia.
