Japan announces aid for Khmer Rouge tribunal records

Japan has announced it will donate two million US dollars for a centre to keep the legal records of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge tribunal.

The documentation centre will store the public records of the UN-backed tribunal.

Japan's embassy says the centre will serve as a token of remembrance and non-recurrence of the Khmer Rouge regime.

It says the funds will also support the building of another legal centre where Cambodian lawyers can represent those who are socially vulnerable.

A month ago the court heard final arguments in its first war crimes trial -- that of former Khmer Rouge prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch.

Up to two million people died as a result of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979.

It is very good idea to build the Khmer Rough Record Center. It will be a center for recording this part of Khmer history to Khmer children and current and future Khmer leaders learn and not repeat the history.

Khmer Rough tribunal is a slap and a warning to Hun Sen and his group not to do anything stupid. It is a warning to them that one day Hun Sen and his group will have destiny like his former Khmer Rough bosses.

Hun Sen's hands are bloody. He has involved in many killing of Khmer innocent people. One day Khmer people will sentence him like Khmer Rough leaders. He has stayed more than he is welcomed to stay in power. It is better for him now to resign and be Khmer hero. but he waits till he is forced to go, then he will have no place to stay. All some small good things he has done, will lose too. His children and his family will nave no place to stay. Khmer people will take back what he stole from Khmer people.

Hundreds of millions is spent on
the cause of justice, yet the widows
and the orphans are dying just out
side the gates. That is the hall mark
of the UN.
History is more important for the
dead then money spent on the living.
Such justice stinks to heaven.

I love Japanese people. They are the kindest country in the world. They dont look down on people and always willing to help another asian country. They dont even ask a favor back.

Cambodian will alway be grateful for the generosity shown by Japan and the Japanese people. We will be friends forever.

Thailand can learn a few things or two from Japan.

Hah Hah... I love these modern Japanese people too, but I hated them when they agreed to help Phan Boi Chau to take Cambodia and Laos just a temporray controlled indochina, and helped Thailand to take Siem Riep and Battambang from Cambodia.

Another copy of all documents should be stored someplace else. Perhaps in Japan or in Switzerland.

10:52am, I'm 100% agree with you there. But I think Japan did learn a valuable lessen not to be on the wrong(evil)side again. Since World War II, Japan has done no aggression toward any country. Your point is well taken.
