Phnom Penh - Thai troops shot dead a Cambodian man who crossed into Thailand to fell trees illegally, local media reported Friday.
Phlok Lai, 55, is the third Cambodian national to be shot and killed by Thai troops in the past three months.
District police chief Keo Tann said another man in the group of 10 was seriously injured while a third is missing after the incident late Tuesday. The remaining seven made it back safely to Cambodia.
'The Thai officers at the border said they would find the missing man if we ordered people to refrain from going to Thailand to log illegally,' Keo Tann told the Phnom Penh Post newspaper.
Earlier this month a Cambodian man was shot dead by Thai soldiers while illegally logging inside Thailand. In the most notorious case Thai soldiers were accused of shooting and then burning alive a 16-year-old Cambodian youth in September. Thailand denied the youth was burned alive.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong described the Thai soldiers' behaviour as 'very cruel.'
'In previous years the Thai military would just arrest our people who were illegally crossing the border and sentence them to jail,' he said. 'But now they are shooting our people.'
Earlier this week the Cambodian government warned its citizens living along the 800-kilometre long border, much of which has yet to be officially demarcated, to avoid crossing the border into Thailand.
The shootings come at a time of heightened tensions between the two nations. Both withdrew their ambassadors last month after Cambodia appointed Thailand's fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an adviser to the Cambodian government.
Cambodia and Thailand also have a long-standing dispute over the land surrounding the ancient Preah Vihear temple in northern Cambodia. Over the past 18 months clashes between troops at Preah Vihear have cost the lives of at least seven soldiers.

Hun sen must increase in migrant intake from Viet of up to at least 2 million people and place them around Preah Vihear area ASAP or otherwise Thai will continue to kill innocent khmer people just like they have always done it before. Viet has helped Khmer before and now is the time to bring Viet in and help to rebuild the whole nation of Khmer all over again. When viet is in, we will be stronger and better than ever before. Hun Sen has no other choice except increase in population growth. The more people we have the better! This time no more talk but more action. I don't understand the mentality of the Khmer people living along the khmer-tai border. If they decide to cross the border at their own risk and peril, at least they should arm themselves with weapons for defense. They know full well the Hun Sen's gov't won't come to their rescue.

After four years hard labor under KR, these poor dumb khmers never learn how to be smart or how to be tough. Instead they are still soft and passive that's why the Thais and the Viets are taking advantage of them. Like I mentioned before...if you plan to cross thailand illegally you better carry weapon with you to protect yourself incase the barbaric thai soldiers shoots you. This is what happen when you want to be passive, you end up six feet under. And thats what happened with these poor guys when they decided to go empty handed. They got their ass beat and killed. This shows that Cambodian government is careless about their people's live. If the incident happens to be Thai who illegally cross into our territory and we shoot them and leave to die, the Thai government is not going to keep quiet just like the Khmer government did. Our Khmer government is good at oppressing our own people only. When time to face with the foreigner, Khmer government is just chicken.

Ah Hun Sen has warned Ah thief Siem about shoot to kill if Ah Siem crosses the border, but so far Ah Sen doesn't shoot anyone of them. He only shoots his own people.

Folks, like i used to say again and again, i thought our khmer people had learned something from Khmer rouge's regime, remembered we all worked day and night without nothing to eat?? i knew we need the money right now! but it's very dangerous to go and crossing illegally right now?? people can find other things to do at home, farming, raising livestocks, fishing or something? i've learned alot from Pol Pot's time, i knew how to trap rats and fish like a crane...Poor khmer people shoud use their brains, is this money worth it?? but if you decide to go, don't go with empty hands, bring along RPG7 with you or something...
If i was in the same situation like these people, i will not go up there without any weapons in my hands, people should realize that they will get shot at or killed by Thais soldier, people should armed up and bring along the weapons with them, shoot them back...The funny thing is our Khmer military done nothing, while Thais still sitting inside our territory everyday, why don't they shoot them or do something????

Early this month, 3 Thais entered Cambodia illegally, were detained and handed back to Thai authority after being pardoned by king Sy hak Mony.
Now 7 more being tried in Cambodia for illegal entry.
Hun Sen' s government sent troops to Thai/Khmer border " we' ll protect even 1mm of from being lost to Thai" but Yourn can put the border posts any where they want. If Khmer protest that we loss our land to Yourn, they will be arrested and thrown in jail by our own government. Their responses always the same lines " we loss some and gain some" even they know we loss a lot of land but too coward to admit because every body afraid that they will loss their rank.
Yourns can come to Cambodia any time. Some come to do the logging in Rat Ta nak kiri. When people complained to authority, they use the same lines " we did not know that but we' ll investigate" but when our Khmer people cut some trees to build their house, they got arrested right away.
