Thaksin's return expected to fuel row

AFP and Bangkok Post

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has landed in Cambodia, setting the stage for another diplomatic fracas.

Bangkok sought Thaksin's extradition from Cambodia last month when he visited Phnom Penh to take up a position as government economic adviser. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen rejected the extradition request.

Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said last night Bangkok would submit a new request for Thaksin's extradition, but Cambodian foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said it would be "just a waste of time".

"Cambodia's position on the issue will not change," he said. "We will not extradite or arrest Thaksin."

Soon after his arrival yesterday, Thaksin went to Prey Sar prison to visit Sivarak Chuthipong, 31, the Thai engineer jailed last week for seven years on charges of spying. Sivarak is due to be released today after Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni granted him a pardon.

Thaksin is expected to attend an official ceremony at Hun Sen's home following Sivarak's release. Also attending will be Puea Thai Party figures who left Bangkok for Cambodia yesterday to attend the ceremony.

Smart move Samdach Hun Xen! You are the best Cambodian leader who knows how to play politics with Thais.

$90 miilion trade versus $2 billion trade with Thailand in 2008, who will loose more in term of $$$$$$$$$$? LOL all the way to the bank and screw the Thais.

Thai politicains are so childish..! Why do they keep repeating the same issue with Cambodia while they knew that thing will NOT be happened as request? Is this ashame of Thailand? And why it didn;t make the same request to Dubai where Thaksin is lodging in? Too much brainless of Thai leaders. Today is 21st century, and Khmers today are the progenies of the Khmer ancestors who has learned and educated well of the history of Cambodia who were the BUILDERS of all temples in Cambodia and in some parts of Thailand today, too. Siam must think twice before they act to Cambodia..!

Cambodian government officials as well as the leaders of the oppositions need to bring up the issue of the killings of Cambodian citizens by Thai soldiers at the Thai-Cambodian border. While Cambodian released a Thai criminal and put him on a pedestal, Thailand has sent some body bags of Khmer people to Cambodia.

The news of Thaksin's visit to Cambodia and Saravak's release overshadowed the news of SRP's MPs who are heading to Svay Rieng to check out the demarcations of Cambodia-Vietnam border post. Bringing up this important issue at this particular time is probably less effective because people inside Cambodia as well as the members of the world community are not really paying much attention to the this matter.

Neverthless, Hun Sen and the CPP cannot continue to ignore the problems at the Cambodia-Vietnam borders forever.

Dear Comrades HUN SEN, HENG SAMRIN AND CHEA SIM,

Since after Taksin has become an economic advisor to Cambodian Government (mainly TO HUN SEN), The Hun Sen Government increases TAXES, PUT New Taxes to help HUN SEN Government's Economic Downturn.

BUT, IN FACT, Taksin is now disturbing the national economy of Cambodia.

HE IS CONDUCTING AN ECONOMIC ESPIONAGE, SABOTAGE AND OTHER ECONOMIC SUBVERSIVE ACTS TO WEAKEN CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT.

HUN SEN, THE MORE YOU LISTEN TO TAKSIN, THE MORE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR POPULARITY.

From a street Cafe economic analyst.

With this excuse, will several Thais F16 airforce travel quiet at night drop bombs on Phnom Penh where Taksin is presented (during ceremony may be)? Just a wild though.
